Great video. I'm new to soldering. I am a subscriber never dreamed anyone could do this type of soldering. Wow how amazing and you make it look so easy. Kind of like magic. Could you do a video on types of flux and solder. I work on tvs and was only replacing the boards in the tv. What would be a good recommend solder and flux be for repairing through hole capacitors. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all the wonderful videos

At what temperature do you use the wipe(I'm assuming a Kimwipe) on the tip itself??

Hi, thank you for all the work you put on those videos! There helping me a lot. Maybe can you give some adice regarding a weller tip. I'm in microsoldering phones pcb's. And i want to buy a weller wx2021 and comes with a wxmp soldering iron and a tip rt3. I know that i will need also a bigger tip maybe a chisel one for soldering bigger smd's (like 0805 or 2020). What can you recomand? Thank you, master :)

If my tip already has some black spots, do I get them off with the gold brillow tip cleaner?

i just stummbled on ur page and i noticed u dont use extra flux is it not necessary and i bought a E682 controller for my Christmas lights it comes unassembled and im wondering if my lil 30w iron would do the job ive only used it for stepper motors and Led lights and it worked fine any information would be greatly appreciated

What kind of wipe do you use? Was it a paper towel with alcohol?

I just found out, that an inox sponge in the hand work very good, I give it a light streak from inside to outside, after cleaning retin. I bought it yesterday in a supermarket, very good result.

Nothing about wool? Most more expensive soldering stations come with wool for cleaning instead of sponges, they do not damage the tip either. I am still using the tip my Weller came with after 8 years (although the chisel edge it is now pretty much worn round, and should be replaced).

+tHaH4x0r - I referred to it in the video as a gold brillow tip cleaner. Let's call it then a brass wool solder tip cleaner. Are we on the same page now? www.google.com/?ion=1&espv=2#q=brass+wool+solder+tip+cleaner&tbm=shop

+tHaH4x0r it never wipes the gun as good as if I wipe it in a damp sponge with a hole in it (weller kind). After a while I seem to pick up old solder from the mesh. Also if I have no solder on gun and it starts to get some surface oxides (that yellowish tint), I can't clean it in wool, but it works great with a sponge - I use the wool only to remove big amounts of old solder and wipe it in sponge after. That's just my experience.. all the tips are still as new after years of using (I don't know what people are talking about when they say thermal damage). And even if I would damage them over time, I would simply replace them.. tips aren't meant to work eternally anyway

+John Gammell Ah i see, i was confused because you mentioned it, but did not show the usage in the video itself.

+Google+ SUCKS BALLS - the worst forced social network Wet sponges clean better, yes, but they damage the tip. They are less likely to be the correct temperature when heated up, and the thermal shock can 'bend' the base, which gives less than optimal thermal contact between tip and iron. Lastly it promotes oxidation. And i think you may have bad quality wool if it picks stuff up from the mesh. After 8 years i am still doing fine with the 2 balls supplied by weller with my station. If solder gets in there it doesnt attach to the wool. I can collect a lot of solder balls when i clean the tray that contains the wool.

tHaH4x0r I'll try to pick up a different wool and give it another chance. All my tips are very long in base (5cm) with tight tolerances between it and the heater core - I would notice if it's bending anywhere. Maybe it's high thermal mass doesn't affect my tips so much.. I only use sponge and after many years of weekend usage the damage should be visible: s28.postimg.org/4nx3tfwct/20160411_110919.jpg They pretty much look like new (minus all the burnt flux on the base start)

I use raw unbleached paper, works a treat. I don't see the need for water or specifically a sponge.
@jkgamm041
@jkgamm041 8 лет назад
+ekner - I use any kind of wipe. I have used tissue paper at a buck a box for the same result. I'm in and out of there so quick that there is zero charring.
@ekner
@ekner 8 лет назад
***** Sounds perfectly reasonable. Looking at my sheet of paper right now, which I have used a lot, there really isn't any black at all in most of the wipe streaks. Would carbon contaminate the tip?
@jkgamm041
@jkgamm041 8 лет назад
This is the main reason why I get in and out quickly. Burning or charring will result in carbon. Any introduction of carbon to the solder when liquid can promote dendritic growth and dendrites are conductive. They will violate minimum electrical clearance and short through a vapor arc.
@ekner
@ekner 8 лет назад
I see, I hadn't heard about dendrites before. Is the vapor arc short-risk relevant for normal 0-12 V DC work?
@jkgamm041
@jkgamm041 8 лет назад
+ekner - I believe the risk is still present even with low voltage DC. Here is some reference material that I highly recommend. Watch out for copper dissolution as well on lead-free. nepp.nasa.gov/whisker/dendrite/ www.google.com/?ion=1&espv=2#q=dendritic+growth+electronics nepp.nasa.gov/whisker/index.html

+ga12f12o - Anytime. If everyone used this technique people would maximize tip life and performance thereby reducing the expense of tip cost, a consumable as we call it. A cost saver to manufacturers.

+John Gammell Can you do a video on correct tip temperature? - the flux in the solder when touching the iron, need to clean the surface, without aggressively burning off. This doesn't get as much as attention. I noticed the tin on the iron when too hot shows nasty discoloration. Thank you!
@jkgamm041
@jkgamm041 8 лет назад
+ga12f12o - I like your suggestion. The discoloration is flux residue. I have seen burnt flux residue on tips many times. The next video we do will be on tip temps and maintenance for tin/lead and lead-free. I have flux that is almost impossible to burn off. High solids rework Tack Flux. Makes alloys wet real sweet. We will do an real nice video for you and the others. Straight up. My best to you.

+John Gammell Please take your time to do the video, give us tips and suggestions what to look out for. I just thought about a technique to solder a difficult connection with large thermal mass 2-3oz ground plane, to preheat to pad and component x seconds, x seconds pause and than the actual soldering, do you use such a method?, to put less thermal stress on components, thank you very much for your videos !

New to your channel and have subbed, enjoy the topics, but could you please just speak instead of text? It distracts from the topic as one has to pause to read then un-pause to watch. Thanks for understanding!
@jkgamm041
@jkgamm041 8 лет назад
+Vintage Electronics Geek - That's why I do it. To get people to pause and read. Call it a distraction but it's really an education. When people read the captions carefully, they will gain more than simply by listening. I have found in my years of training that when we read and digest the technical content slowly we increase our comprehension as well as our ability to retain and apply the knowledge. I assure you, the pauses will benefit you and many. You can always replay too. Doing a clean voiceover and cutting that in during editing is a pain.
