Pontus Jansson communes with stones, and piles them one upon the other to make gravity-defying sculptures. For Jansson, it is a kind of meditation. He posts his works on Instagram, where they are admired by thousands.

Someone sit me down and tell me the actual negative impacts of taking stones from a local area and stacking them in a pile that can easily deconstruct? He lives, on this island, collecting stones, on the island which he lives, and bringing the stones, to where he lives, on the island. I genuinely don't understand any negative ecological impacts here? You (the commenters mad at him moving stones) don't get mad at birds do you? Because they move stones too. How about rivers? those change stones. groundhogs and rabbits? those dig stones. genuinely do not understand why using local stones to stack in a pile that will eventually collapse is a bad thing.

Reading up on it it seems the scale of this done by many people in national parks can have negative impacts on erosion and certain endangered species. Michael Grab is often cited as one of the biggest influences on the modern Rock Stacking trend. I personally think it's a bit silly to get so mad at one person doing a hobby, what would be more meaningful to my mind is to investigate how trend spreading through social media can create negative impacts and how to mitigate that on a wider scale.

Nothing but Graffiti. I knock them over when I find them in otherwise natural habitats.

Am I the only one who is not impressed? There are few things that irritate me more than hiking into a remote area, expecting natural beauty, only to find these idiotic stone pillars left by previous hikers as some banal human calling card. Sure, this guy has perfected the skill, but it's still nothing other than graffiti - not what I want to see when I'm out enjoying nature.

Exactly. Instagram is destroying our natural world.

Disappointing he's taking stones home with him... Hopefully not from any primitive or protected nature sites. Otherwise, a good highlight on a simple meditative practice.

Disappointing? Where DO people get the arrogance to use that word? And, yeah, it's so simple.
