SEGA made changes to the Master System conversion by introducing a power-up system that allows the player to enter secret shops and upgrade parts of their armor.
- Helmets give access to new weapons and magic spells
- Chest armor allows the player to sustain more damage
- Boots increases the player's speed -

I was 5/6 when I played this... I watched the whole gameplay as every level brought a memory back to life in my brain. That was sick, thanks

I always thought this was a great port for the master system. Even the music turned out pretty good. The late SMS games were sadly overlooked due to the far superior Genesis games, but they were pushing the system hard in the final years of the system's life.

They were. I still had my master system up until 1995. Bram Stokers Dracula, The 3rd SMS Sonic game, Star Wars etc..amazing games few people ever played

ouch - you serious? while the NES version is primitive compared to the arcade and all its ports, the music definitely sounds better - i thought the SMS had more a sophisticated sound chip...
@chinarut
@chinarut 3 года назад
ok i guess it’s been too long since I played the NES version - now that I’m walking through both versions - i have to admit you’re right - for its 8-bit capabilities - the music is decent and the overall stage design of the SMS port is definitely more faithful!

Being such a fan of the arcade back in the day, I had to have the game. I didn't expect anything near the Genesis port for sure, but they actually managed to come with a more-than-decent version, adding unique elements such a life bar or upgrading armor. Fond memories of the 12 year old me.

Whenever I played this as a kid , I would just see the first level as my chance to max out. Since you gotta brave these levels twice, there is definitely the potential to max out on a regular pace while progressing normally, but I love the mobility of the gold armor and enjoying the extra hit points. This is how a home port should be. It will obviously be different due to graphical limits, so might as well make the difficulty user friendly!

After some 29 years this version of G'N G remains with me as it was the only version that I ever hired via a video shop and finished via 1990!! And what a ride it was alittle less painful than some of the other versions but still painful in the eyes of an 12 year old but yeah because it was tough but fair but still kinda tough. This version of the game always seems to get overlooked in favour of other conversions. It's the most unique version of this games namesake around because of its unique RPG-like elements and it is is still to this day the only version that has that. Loved it and I still do to this while trying to play the other versions these days. However the SMS version will always stay within me, just wish it got a little more accreditation as it really pushed the console to the max. Too me the forgotten version.

This is such a strange version of the game. It's like a precursor to _Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins_ on the PSP in that there's a legitimate inventory system with upgrades and such. And actually... it _kind_ of reminds me of the _Gargoyle's Quest_ series in that same way.

I've recently begun collecting some Saturn games, I have a soft spot for underdog hardware, but Sega of America seemed to make all the wrong choices with the system and Europe just sort of followed suit. Honestly, I've never seen a single ad for the system when it was actually available and didn't know it existed until a friend of mine got a Dreamcast and told me there was this really expensive system between the Mega drive and it.
@Yuuretsu
@Yuuretsu 11 лет назад
No, Sega cut out the FM chip for a western release because they didn't care, blame them and watch your blood pressure geez. Nintendo cut the FM chip out of the Famicom for Western releases but they had the foresight to leave the capacity for extra sound chips in, that's not 'hacks', that's just intelligent design. Don't blame people for being smarter than your childhood company now, that's immature.

Ok then peace. I suppose I do hate the NES with a passion, never owned one as a kid took a dive in getting one a few years back was pissed off by how overhyped it was. For one the system design is awful, looks ugly, the games don't work half the time, and it damages the cartridge contacts each time you play. The games glitch often. The games mostly were boring, high level of flicker, awful sound effects. Holding the controller makes you feel like you have arthritis in your hands.

I think I have about 45 games now and it really is a nice system to have if only because it was the last system really made for 2D games, that just gets my nostalgia going. It's a shame only a fraction of the system's games were ever localized because only the 3D games fit Sega of America's bill. I'm still imagining that 2D Sonic game on the Saturn sometimes that was graphically as awesome as Guardian Heroes.

I'll honestly say the SNES is my #1 console due to nostalgia even though it technically excels in most areas over the Mega Drive. I am one of those people who loves the Mega drive sound chip even doesn't sound great unless you had a talented developer. By the way, I thought Sega chose the older sound chip in the Master System to cut costs due to the bigger color palette and much faster CPU etcetera, but I never really found any facts to prove or disprove that hypothesis
@Alianger
@Alianger 11 лет назад
Some nice sounding SMS games are The Flash, Road Rash, and Alien 3. Also Devilish, Arena and Power Strike II for GG, which used basically the same chip but with stereo. NES did have the better chip though.

PineKushDude I don't live in the US, but if you're asking if I don't vote for backwards, ignorant politicians who want to drag my country back to the '50s, then that's correct. PineKushDude Kidnapping rates have actually come DOWN from 30 years ago here (I can't find data spanning back 50 years with a per capita scale), the thing is, there is more and wider media coverage for these types of events than 50 years ago. The threats existed back then but reporting methods and policing methods have changed.
@Yuuretsu

I love how someone can state something like that without giving some technical specs. the Master system sound chip is actually quite old. the Commodore 64 and Colecovision use a chip of the same type and those were released in 1983 and 1982 respectively.
@XXSomeDudeXX
@XXSomeDudeXX 12 лет назад
There was a game on the master system, which was very controversial because the fighting scenes were super graphic. It was a medieval/fantasy setting like Ghouls n Ghosts, but the format was different. The fight scenes were a separate part of the gameplay, one on one, and from slightly above and behind your character. He would hack and slash, and I recall could electrocute. One of the finishing moves was slicing an enemy clean in half vertically. Fight scenes had digitized voices. Anyone recall?

If you wanna talk a combination of talented people, try Naoki Kodaka, who made, among other things, the soundtracks to Journey to Silius, Gremlins 2 and Batman: Return of the Joker. It both shows the technical limitations of the SMS because it couldn't use extra chips and the talent of a great sound designer.

Could be, I owned both systems as a kid, but i got an NES first and al my friends has an NES as well. I spent much more time with the NES as a result.I like the NES high pitched tones in a lot of games for some reason. I'll say that Megadrive vs SNES sound is a mixed bag. The SNES sounds great, producing a lot of orchestral sounding RPG scores, but it misses the bass that really shines in some Megadrive games and SNES music doesnt sound much like chiptunes at times, which can be a shame sometime

Why are peoples childhoods so hurt by the fact that I like the way the NES sounds better? I owned both systems for Christ sakes. The question you should ask yourself, as a consumer, not a child from at least 20 years ago, in retrospective: Did the master system have a (PAL)library and the technical specs and price point to make people choose it over the NES? History tends to say no, unless we go into specific sales numbers for both systems of a handful of countries.
