In today's lesson, I will be showing you how to master the circle of fifths and your key signatures. Follow the technique outlined later in this lesson to learn your key signatures and know them like the back of your hand. You will also learn how to memorize your order of sharps and order of flats. These will help you master what sharps and flats exist within a key. Learning the circle of fifths is helpful as a music student. You will be able to use it when you play music, when you improvise, and when you play in a group with other musicians. Remember that there are major keys (sound happy), and minor keys (sound sad). This lesson is geared for music theory and piano students alike.

I have it memorized now as a chant: A 1: Father Cant Get Down And Eats Beads A 2: BEAD GCF A 3: If the key Signature has sharps to find the key go up 1/2 step from the last sharp key within the order of sharps. A 4: If key signature has flats; The next to last Flat key within the order flats is the key, only works when 2 or more flats are shown otherwise 1 flat key signature = the key of F. Awesome video thank you

I am taking music Theory 101 and we just started going over key signatures. This is extremely helpful and you did a fantastic job of teaching this material. I came up with my own mnemonic for sharps. First Class Girls Don't Associate with Every Boy. I know I had to throw with in there but I ignore it because there is no W note.

I find this memorizing time good: # = F, C, Good, Day, And Evevning Blast b = B, E, A, D, Grand, Compact, Feel FC like FC Barcelona and the rest in the sharps is improvised. The grand compact feel is Kawai’s key mechanism & the word BEAD is an actual word.

I figured an alternative technique for finding what key you're in based on how many flats are in the key signature. Count the flats like this 1:F 2:B 3:E 4:A 5:D 6:G 7:C Which is just the order of flats but the F is first (F for first).

My 2 cents : Actually you don't have to memorize that Key F has B flat. With BEADGCF, just imagine that when you go one before B, it goes all the way back to F which is the end of BEADGCF. So, just memorizing BEADGCF for flats and FCGDAEB for sharps is enough :)

RE / Circle of Fifths ( vs by ear.... a dif chapter....) A. you have to have a algebra and geometry understanding. ( the names are fictitious, that why the naming is with odd order) B. the explanation nomenclature could be fixed better by a modern science Engineer'. C. Music not an exact defined science yet , all theory , it get deeper , see RF D. 12 chro. sounds total , with steps and halfs steps with that " mark the musical key " Circle of Fifths is one of many explanation to predict or map the cyclic rotation. note standard tuning on a guitar , A 440 Gsharp , and I still see " clown faces on so called pro's and experts " when I say this....... yes the 2 thinnest strings are sharp on a guitar std. ( I would guess 1/128 of a step?) The guitar cheats , ( tuning , a valid method) vs a piano which is laid and made perfect in tuning . go's to show you this is no rule (law) by any means, but a good foundation. see / slide / whammy bar see / geometry factors / fractions One mite say , " Add the Golden Means # number , and you will be well tuned~ " thx MCAT ACEzzz

Very useful. Another tip my music teacher gave me is to use the tonic scale and count one step up from the LAST Sharp (Tee) for the sharp key and count four back (Faa) from the last flat. So, if we find a the last sharp is a C (tee) we go up one to the Do (D). If we find the last flat is a B (Faa), we count back, Mee, Ray, Do to find the key is A Flat.

I find a good way to memorize which sharps and flats to play with a key signature is to visualize it. Imagine the “C” scale on the piano; you have a group of 3 white and 2 black keys and next to it a group of 4 white and 3 black keys. If you have a scale with 1 sharp (G), that sharp is the left most black key in the group of three. With 2 sharps (D) you add the left most black key in the group of 2. With 3 sharps, add the next left most black key in the group of 3, with 4 sharps add the next left most key in the group of 2, with 5 sharps add the last black key, with 6 add the left most WHITE key in the group of 4 white/3 black and finally 7 sharps the left most white key in the group of 3 white/2 black For flats it is the same except this time it’s the right most. So 1 flat is the right most black key in the group of three, 2 flats, add the right most black key in the group of 2 etc. It helped me. Hope it helps you

I grew up playing the violin, and my teacher and I both had cats. As I was just learning at the time I memorized the order of the first 4 sharps and flats separately and then combined them, so for sharps it was: Fat Cats Good Dudes (AEB) and for flats the letters spell the word bead so: B E A D (GCF). Every time we played a new song she would ask me what key we were in, and I never had the answer BECAUSE I never learned the relationships between the sharps and flats and the Key signature. I played for 7 years from ages 5-12 and never knew what key signature I was playing in. Now I'm a Music Business major in college, taking theory 1 and the fact I never learned key signatures is biting me in the behind (I have a test tomorrow and I'm cramming hard on key sigs). WORD FROM THE WISE: LEARN YOUR KEY SIGNATURES AND NEVER EVER FORGET THEM!! p.s. if you are a woman, or you play an instrument ONLY in the table clef, take the time to learn how to read in bass clef as well ESPECIALLY if you plan on having a career in music (or even if your are remotely interested) if I had learned this stuff earlier my Theory class would be a breeze!!

Very nice lesson! One confusing thing is the 'going up 5', because an interval is really a span of notes. When they say 'going up', it just doesn't work like that. If we're on C, then going up 'four' relative to C, gets us to 'G'. When we say 'go up five' from 'C', then it becomes confusing. It should really be going up "span minus 1" (or interval number minus 1) from C. Eg. if the interval (span) is five notes, then going up an interval of 5 (relative to C) actually means starting from 'C' and include C in the span of five, which is C-D-E-F-G. So basically, intervals are not 'distances' between notes. Instead, an interval is a span of notes.

On the subject of the circle of fifths, I found a useful way of remembering how many sharps and flats occur at each key. One needs to imagine that it is a clock who's hands go in both directions with 12 o'clock being the key of C with no sharps. At 1 o'clock there is 1 sharp (F) At 2 o'clock there are two sharps (F&C) and so on to 7 o'clock. Now we work the hand traveling anti clockwise with 1 o'clock being in the place of 11 and 2 o'clock replacing 10 and so on. Working anti clockwise at 1 o'clock there is 1 flat (Bb), at 2 o'clock, 2 flats ( Bb & Eb) Another way of remembering the order of sharps is to learn this rather silly rhyme: Fat cats go down allys eating bread. (F,C,G,D,A,E,B) Regarding the flats just spell out BEAD and add G Hope this is helpful to your other students Tim. Regards, John Warren ( a rather mature beginner student of 74 years) From Fareham UK.

Cool tips. The circle itself tells us the sharps and flats in each major key. For sharps, start from F major and move clockwise. So the first sharp in G major is F#. The two sharps in D major are F# and C#, etc. For flats, we start from Bb, and move counter clockwise. Bb is the one sharp in F major. Bb and Eb are the two flats in Bb, etc. If you need a good explanation of this, check out David Bennett's channel for circle of fifths.

Awesome video man thank you. I actually learned something from this one. Figuring out which Major Key has your number or sharps or flats, great tip. How come no one ever mentions the fact that the order of sharps and flats is on the circle of fifths tho? If you know the order of sharps start at F and the flats start at B. Start on F and go clockwise you have the order of sharps. Start on B and go counterclockwise and you have the order of flats.

Thank you always for all of your well-explained lessons. I especially liked the lesson before on how to apply primary chord progressions on a sheet of music. I felt like I was actually using the theory to writing music. Can you please do more of these because I want to know how to do more complicated chords like chords inversions. Also, can you please tell me why some songs, like Nuvole Bianche doesn't seem to use primary chords in thr base? Or maybe they are inversions?
