Oh. My. Word. What a difference your video has made! I’m a crocheter who is trying to teach myself to knit. I was practicing Russian style, but was still struggling to achieve a smooth hand movement. Norwegian is so much easier! I’m still very rusty and loose, but I believe I’ll get it. Thank you so much!

Game Changer!!!! I'm an English style knitter, in fact, more lever style than anything as I can get a good speed with that. I have never been able get on with continental knitting and I've tried numerous times. I could just about manage the knit stitch although it was more like this picking style but the purl stitch and bringing the yarn in front was beyond me. I envy people who can do the continental style. However, this I have managed to grasp in just a few rows, even the purl stitch. You must have a magic touch when it comes to teaching. I shall practice it a bit more but I already feel confident enough to give it a go in my next project. I'm still a bit fingers and thumbs as it's only been an hour but already I'm really liking this style. I know it will take a while to master it but it's a learning curve I'm enjoying. I found combination style for continental was the game changer for me, allows you to pick your purls and knits, you just knit through the back loop! Yarn is automatically on the front side for purls and backs for knits!

Wait… I’m on the same boat! I want to make a cardigan for fall/winter but at the rate I’m knitting with continental it’s going horribly 😤 I put it down in frustration after trying for an hour or two. I go back to crochet as my comfort zone 😂
I wanted to learn knitting bc I always see these beautiful color worked sweaters and I want to make one so bad! But I was feeling the same where I would get discouraged and just stick to crochet - I thought no way I would be able to knit something decent sized bc I struggled so much it just felt so strange in my hands. I think part of it for me is how free the crochet hook is vs how stiff I have to hold the knitting needles to not lose stitches, but I think I am getting better at it. I can say I just learned this technique from this video a few days ago and I am already halfway through a sock! Lol it’s slow going, but it feels like something I could get faster at eventually with more muscle memory. It is so worth it to try different methods bc some things just work better or worse for different people!

When you do a purl make sure on the last step the needle is on the right side of the yarn to your finger . If it on the left side it will make a yarn over . Ask me how I know. Lol . folks once u get the hang of the way she is knitting you will love it . I’m self taught and this is how I knit.
As a crocheter all my life, when I learned to knit, I went straight to Norwegian style and didn't even know it. I thought I was doing Continental. I've just never been a fan of having my fingers sticking in the air. For purling, I initially tried Continental purling and was like, "Absolutely not." Norwegian purling saved my knitting journey.
You’re very welcome ☺️ It can be intimidating at first but you got this! It’s just practice. When I taught myself the Norwegian purl stitch I made a blanket so I could get the hang out it plus it really helped with tension. Which made all the difference. Good luck! 💕
I struggled with Continental knitting, keeping that finger in the air was just not working, couldn’t keep it taut enough and my hand hurt after a while. Norwegian knitting is sooo much easier. Thanks for this
I always knitted in the Portuguese way, with the yarn around my neck. It supplies a constant tension to the yarn and the result is a very neat, perfect work, whatever the pattern. The problem is I made a complete set of baby's clothing including a blanket and I busted my left thumb. I need to learn another method otherwise I can't knit and I've been it doing since 4yo. I tried the continental, the english, the combined and it's not difficult, they just don't produce good enough results. Probably because I'm not used to them. This method seems a bit more time consuming but so far the results are better. Let's see. Thanks!
I think everyone has a preference that works best for them. I’m glad you found yours in the Portuguese method. Sorry about your thumb hopefully it heals fast and you can continue as you’ve always done. For me personally I’ve found the Norwegian method the quickest and easiest. I purl much faster with this method compared with others I’ve tried. I love that there are so many different styles it encourages more people to into and enjoy knitting! Hopefully this method helps you out while you heal 🩷
I knit stockenette Norwegian Style. After I got the hang of it, I loved it so much better, but for me, when I purl, I guess you would call it picking. I just bring my yarn to the front, grab it and put through. So fast and easy. I think purling this way is fun, but no matter how hard I tired, I personally had issues with uniformity.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I also struggled at first to get a nice uniform look. I practiced with a blanket and that really helped with tensioning. But honestly if you enjoy purling the other way, I’d do that then. It’s all about enjoyment 🩷 So happy you found my channel!
Great question! I would go with sizes 4 mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm in wood. I say wood because metal is way more slippery (great for speed when you’re more comfortable knitting). I suggest these sizes because it gives you a range to work with DK and worsted weight yarns. Chunky yarn (especially super chunky) will hurt your hands- experienced or not so more a more pleasurable experience I’d go with worsted weight to start and then a DK (which is a little finer). The needles I suggested with go both yarn weights. Happy knitting!!
Does the purl stitch get stretched out? It seems like a lot of slack is needed. I'd like to use it for ribbing bc switching the yarn to the front every other stitch really slows me down
I definitely experienced that at first. I practiced with blankets to get the tension right. It helps to give it a slight tug as you knit. Wish I could explain it better but that’s what I do.
I am old school Russian knitter (learned at grandmothers side 60 years ago). I am trying to do brioche , and have a friend who is continental knitter trying as well and the technique does not work past the first 2 rows. Do we have to learn a whole different style to make an item from brioche
