Master THE NUMBERS SYSTEM (in under 10 minutes!)

I'll keep this super short as I'm writing this from the middle of a studio session (with the one and only Gary Willis... WHOOP!)... so let's get to it...
You can practice your scales... practice your arpeggios... but if you don't understand THIS none of that will matter as you won't understand how and why EVERYTHING is connected...
And once you start to understand this system it's ALL gonna start making sense.
Intrigued?!...
I hope so ;)
It's all about the numbers system... and I'm going to show you how to understand it and apply it to your bass playing - in less than 10 minutes!
As always, see you in the shed!
Scott :)

I would recommend you watch some music theory videos on youtube. e.g. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_eKTOMhpy2w.html Then how chords work ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5Y01jIorpeA.html Things will slowly creep in and make more and more sense. Sometimes songs get transposed to another key than the original key, so the musicians will say "Play 'Summertime' in the key of C minor." So they have a numbering system so that you can understand the changes for the song relative to a number instead of a fixed chord sequence. Like if you are playing blues, you should think 1 4 5 instead of a fixed chord progression of E A and B for a certain song, that way you can say "Play blues in A" and the musicians know that blues is played usually 1 4 5 which in A is A D and E. Also when you are in a certain key and you are trying to tell the other musicians what the chord progression is, you can say "Play the 1 for 2 bars then play the 4 for 2 bars, then play the 5 for 2 bars." If you understand a) the numbering system and b) what chords are diatonic you will know that the 1 4 and 5 are major chords (in a major key). Also if you are showing other musicians and it's an easy song except there is one odd chord you cand say "The 7 chord is a minor, not a half diminished." So the other musicians will know the voicing of that chord. It's essential to know this if you are going to work with other musicians who transpose songs to certain keys or you are trying to iron out some chord progression with the band, say the guitarist is playing a minor chord and it's wrong you can say "The 3 is actually a major here, it's not a diatonic chord". If you don't know what diatonic, major, minor, and how chords are structured and the numbering system you will be lost and look amateur.

it's simpler than this; here in nashville, we always write the chord value after the number as you would when using the letter. 2m7, 5-, etc., etc....
@harmono8766
@harmono8766 4 года назад
He's doing the same exact thing here, but writing out the letters so that you can figure it out. For example. if you say play "2m7" without the context of the key you are in it means nothing. So if you are in the key of C you would play Dm7 if you play the 2m7. He's showing you how to translate 2m7 to an actual chord name in any given key. The top of the chart is the numbers, then the next row is the chord value for those numbers, then he's writing a chord progression based on the numbers. He probably should have written out "IIm7=Dm7". The Roman numerals are used to avoid confusing chord roots with the actual notes of the chord, ie. a Cmaj7 chord has the 7 indicating the chord value, so they write roman numerals for the chord. Also I prefer lower case for the minor chords.

I remember sitting in with a lot of different bands at benefits and so forth when the lead guitar player or the keyboard player would yell across the stage the number sequence and the count. Knowing the type on music being played I could do the song having never heard it. Other information was given such the intro. So it would go something like :"It's a 1-4-5 in A with a turn around intro". (Nashville)

The major scale is (Whole step = W & Half step =H), W-W-H-W-W-W-H. So when you start on a D, the first whole step is E, then to take another whole step you get to F#. (Then half step to G and so on.) This will apply with whichever note you start on.

The "Berklee Method" (as I've heard it called) has become very popular for analyzing contemporary music. At Berklee, they use all capital Roman numerals, then qualify the chord, if necessary ( IV-7 ). When teaching Tonal Harmony and Counterpoint, Berklee still uses the widely accepted capital and lower-case Roman numerals. For me, I like seeing all capital numerals, but lower-case is just as easy to understand. I have never had to read Nashville numbers, but I don't like seeing the Arabic numerals to notate chord functions. Something about 1 6- 2 5b7 looks awful to me, most likely because I haven't practiced reading that way. At least musicians have common ground, as we can say the words "One, Six, Two, Five" without being misunderstood.

The last chord (VII) is a diminished chord (1, b3, b5) NOT a minor seventh flat five (1, b3, b5, b7); this is the next level of harmony where ALL the chords a made up of 4 notes. Get it right kid.

As a drummer, so is this why you hardly ever see bass players change guitars for every song? lol.

If we could get all the Tab Bots to learn the number system, we'd be heading in the right direction. I don't know how many times I see in the comment section. ......"Can I get the tabs for that?" O my.

What is the difference between the Numbers System and the Nashville Number System?

Love it but what about the hundreds of songs that don't follow Maj Minor pattern ? Would you just call them incidental notes
@stxxcrisler

Do you mean songs with chords that are not in the key? This can be modal interchange, secondary dominance, or use of a pivot chord. If the chord has NO relation to the key, it might be a "non-functional" chord. If the out-of-place note is in the melody, it could be a passing tone, a chromatic embellishment, or possibly an awkward chord tension. I don't want to babble on if I'm not answering your question. Is this helpful?

stxxcrisler thanks , I guess what I mean is rock songs using bar chords a lot of them use all major chords
@stxxcrisler
@stxxcrisler 6 лет назад
That is usually Modal Interchange: borrowing from a "parallel key" (A key with the same starting note). Smoke on the Water starts E, G, A, E, G, Bb, A. The G, does not belong in the key of E, but does belong to E minor. So, they just throw it in anyway, because it sounds good. You can still use the number system to notate these chords, but the "Function" of the chord might be different than its function in its "Home Key". It could look like this: I bIII IV I bIII bV IV.

A nuclear engineer can explain to you how the power plant works because he is highly educated but an ordinary citizen still won't understand it. And there I am ... in need of the basic building blocks in the key of C and then we can move on to other keys.

I appreciate this video my dude. I’ve been playing bass for over 30 years and I consider myself an intuitive player. I am musically illiterate. When I play, people assume I know theory based on my skill level. I don’t consider myself to be one that plays music, but rather allows music to move through me. Someone I know really wants me to learn theory so I can understand what I already do naturally. I play music for expression not as a career. My concern is will learning theory suck the life out of the reason why I play in the first place

Can anyone please tell me why at 4:39, it's Bb instead of a normal B? Same with F# and C# at 5:56

Exactly Then, when you learn the notes in the chords, understand what makes the major, minor, 7ths, etc, you can then improvise walking lines, or tear down arpeggios to make any feel you want. Practice practice practice. Thatll do 80% of the world. The other 20% you gotta read. Thats my experience anyway.
