Great video! The video examples are so helpful for illustrating your point, and the tips about maintaining spacing with your partner and facing them during their thirds are absolute gold. It is interesting how your views on short returns seem to have shifted to favoring a bit more aggression than when you made this series.

What a great series! I am always on the lookout for every video John. You're now my favorite RU-vid coach! That last example of positioning by Tyson and shot selection by his partner was a real eye opener. Thank you so much for what you do. Amazing synthesis of all the concepts. The flow chart was incredibly helpful and changed my perception of many situations that came up in my games (I thought you drive the short return no matter what - this would lead to many issues). If you aren't planning it please do a similar breakdown to the Returner/defensive side of the game. Was nice running into you in Austin PPA and exchanging a few words.

After both sides are at the net, there are two things I’ve noticed with really good players. The player on the left tries to anticipate the ball going to the other player and intervene. The other play I noticed is that when the player on the right side does a speed up, he’ll go to the player on the other side right side aiming toward the middle. Both of those plays are not done in lower levels.

Superb. Sometimes I get criticized for moving around the way Tyson moves around in this video. Especially by the white line crowd. I'm not a ball hog, but I am a court hog when I'm the front man, and I'm a big believer in the funneling tactic. I'm not playing at a level where everyone has a reliable shot down the line, so I can't encroach on my partner's side as much as Tyson does in the final clip, but I'd sure like to much of the time. I got some of this tactic from RU-vid, but then I embellished in my own play when I found it successful. And now I see I'm following in Tyson's footsteps, and I'm extremely pleased.

Wow. So well done like so many of your other instructional videos. I am going to question the drop on a short return off a deep serve as it is not what people are normally told and it doesn't fit my experience(maybe because I am driving then as most people were saying to!) It seems to me that off a deep serve and a short return that most returners are not going to be able to get to the kitchen line by the time the serving side hits the third shot. I would say that that is true in your video example too. 1:56 I am not disagreeing with the decision tree, more with the example used. I would say a short serve is more likely to result in a returner already being at the kitchen line as the 3rd is struck. Also, I think that in the next clip where Tyson is driving, it seems to me he should be driving at Dekel who hasn't quite come to rest yet. By hitting to Collin, Tyson is putting Brendon in a bad spot as Collin is most likely to counter that drive at Brendon. So maybe the drive outcome would be different if driven at Dekel.
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball Год назад
Thanks, I thought I covered that in the video. I said that anytime your opponent is late to the line you have a green light to drive. If both opponents are already at the line then we drop a short return 👍

Man, best part of that whole series was your last few minutes on partner positioning with examples by Tyson. So good! Love your teaching style. Had a question maybe you can make into a video. In a situation where you are the much stronger player over your partner, what strategies, shot selection, and court positioning would you use to prevent the other team from basically hitting everything to the weaker player and locking you out of the game. How could you turn that situation around? Example say I'm at a DUPR event with random partners each game. The will be times where I'm the clear stronger player. In rec no big deal games are for fun and practice, don't mind losing there, but with DUPR something is on the line. What can you do to still help influence and control the game?
@blommy224
@blommy224 Год назад
Nicely laid out John, you have a great pragmatic way about your coaching, you really make it clear. Thank You. Side note… Dekel’s serve is a bit on the outrageous side, falling well beyond the baseline from his momentum, seems a bit contradictory to the spirit of pickles, a truncated court with an NVZ. Momentum leading one into the kitchen after a volley is not permitted, why is it cool on a serve then? His flamingo technique combined with his height allows for essentially a tennis like overhand trajectory on the ball Idk… I just was noticing it, not a fan, and I’m sure it’s already been discussed quite a bit :-).
@godgunsandgoldens
@godgunsandgoldens Год назад
The NVZ line is completely different than the end line. That’s why the rules are different. It puts Dekel Bar at a disadvantage if returner is good enough to put ball at his feet as he comes in.
