I currently use TGTB Math for my Kindergartener. And he loved it at first but now I’m struggling to keep his attention. So I will be researching Masterbook Math to possibly use next year. Thanks for this video.
I would argue (not really arguing) that this IS mastery! I don’t move forward with my daughters unless I KNOW they have the concepts of that level mastered! For my oldest with special needs this has meant we have done levels 3 and 4 twice! We will probably do levels 5 twice as well. Masterbooks tells parents how important it is to do the placement tests because this curriculum is very skills based and if your child hasn’t mastered the concepts in level 2 they are going to have a hard time in level 3, if they haven’t mastered the level 3 concepts they will have a hard time in level 4, etc. So in that way, it is a mastery approach. Masterbooks Math is a very unique curriculum in that it is both spiral and mastery! Also, have you seen the practice makes perfect books? Masterbooks is releasing those and they are great for extra practice work if needed or for summer review which is how I utilize the practice makes perfect books.
Sounds like you don’t need right brained flashcards because you’re more left brained learners. 👍 It was refreshing for right brained learners to see richer brained strategies! I agree with you that I don’t care for the story format but I do like the way it is taught. I do like Angels O’Dell’s way of teaching and approach to math! This worked well for my my child who learns from reading and writing it out and I’m using it this year as a guide for what to teach when, as I embark on implementing Dianne craft’s right brained strategies! Thanks for the video. 😊
Yes! I like that you can really do the flash cards or not, but it's not so much of an extra activity if you want to do them. We are definitely are more left brained family, for sure.
Yes! They just came out with it and our next year bundle has it. I'm really excited to see how it works with the program. I always though their biggest complaint was not enough practise and that'll take care of that.
I just printed math 3 off for my 7yr. old daughter. She is enjoying it. I wanted to let you know that Master books also makes an extra practice page workbook for each grade level. It's called Practice makes Perfect. The prices are $19.99 for print and $17.49 for e-book. Thought I would let you know if you needed extra practice.
I enjoyed this as I’ve used Masterbooks math with my oldest two children since level 1. My oldest is currently on level 5. I find the stories corny (and so do my kids) so we skip them. I feel the stories could be written so much better than they are. The story line is fine. It’s just wording I guess that seems elementary. My kids enjoyed the stories in level 1 and 2 and I guess maybe halfway into 3. We’ve skipped all stories in 4 and 5 and it hasn’t been an issues at all. Most of the time the story has nothing to do with the math. I don’t understand that since I thought the stories were suppose to teach the lesson. We are trying the academy class with level 5 and I think it will be helpful. We’ve only had it for a week now. Copywork! My kids hate the copywork 😂. For levels 1-3 it’s fine but once you hit levels 4 and 5 you are copying sometimes a paragraph! It is just not helpful to my kids so we skip it. They love copywork now because they know they can skip it and then their math lesson that is already short gets shorter! I do make them narrate to me what the copywork means. That has been effective. I am going to be doing Math with Confidence with my younger two.
I like the copywork for the younger ones when they are learning their numbers but I do let Alexie skip some of it. I do wish the story was directly connected to the lesson, but it doesn't. It would have made the program better but alas, we can't have everything.
