Great tips I'm waiting for my five string to come in and have never played it before. You're right I never thought of using the b string that way.

I had a little trouble at first, because my hands kept going for that 5th string as an E. I then set on a series of 4-string bass exercises so my hands would automatically know where strings 1 through 4 were. Then it was easy to adapt. I'm sticking with 5 string, especially since much of my music goes down to deep C or even B.
@tylerrayhughes
@tylerrayhughes Год назад
We have to have that low C and B. I totally agree.

Five-string bass allows you to play easier. How? Imagine that you have a capo on fifth fret and play everything five frets closer to the bridge, on the neck portion where frets are much closer, just like you play short scale bass. You'll be able to play easier, faster, and you will have the feeling of four-string bass playing, because you start from first string from the top.

I bought a 5 string exactly for the low B (in my case, A#) so i could play Monuments. So after a while i decided to tune my 4 string with heavy gauges because i never used my high strings...
@tylerrayhughes
@tylerrayhughes Год назад
So you are playing on a 4 string tuned B-E-A-D?

@@tylerrayhughes Drop A# specifically but yeah, im using the bottom 4 strings from a 5 string set

Not playing the B string is so me lol Im totally used to play 5 strings but its ao rare for the musics that i played to sounds good with the low low end And a lot of times i feel like, why do i even use 5s 😅 I can go for like 3 weeks of constant playing without ever playing it at all So to remedy that feeling of uselessness i usually hit the B string on practices

But you’re still looking super cool with a 5 string! Keep rocking.

Great video, appreciate the info....................but I have a question - why is your bass tuned down a 1/2 step? I have perfect pitch so I noticed it right away based on your finger positions - perhaps it's a unintended result of the video upload?
@tylerrayhughes
@tylerrayhughes Год назад
In one of the groups I perform with we sometimes play 10 shows in a week. Tuning the instruments down a half step really helps us out vocally through the year. I should have tuned up for the video

@@tylerrayhughes - got it, totally understand. BTW, I am also a big Harley Benton fan as well............I have the B-550FL (5 string fretless), what a incredible value! Sounds great, looks great - I bought it to give my students a little exposure to the fretless world (I've been teaching bass for years at a arts college in Southeast Asia), but I also enjoy gigging with it too. I still use my trusty Fender J Bass, but I'm truly impressed with the quality of Harley Benton for the price! Keep up the great work Tyler, looking forward to more of your videos!
