n this video, I go through the process of mastering a single track in Reason. This process will prepare your track for streaming services. It will make sure that you are able to hit the target LUFS and True Peak, basically the overall loudness.
All devices used are native plugins and devices in Reason+ or Reason 12. These include the MClass Compressor, MClass Equalizer, MClass Stereo Imager, and MClass Maximizer. In addition to these tools, the Bus Compressor, which emulates the SSL Bus Compressor is also used.
These processes will entail Compression to bring the mix forward to mastering levels. Equalization to clear up the track, add air, and deal with harsh, unwanted, frequencies. The limiter is used to bring the mix to the appropriate LUFS and True Peak.
The addition of the third party Youlean Loudness Meter is used to track the loudness, so that the track hits the appropriate levels for streaming services, such as Spotify, Apple Music, and RU-vid.
This video was written & produced by Lorne Bregitzer, an Associate Professor for the University of Colorado Denver, and an Ableton Certified Trainer. music producer

Remember to bypass the Youlean Loudness meter after you're done checking levels. That sucker is in the background monitoring and storing data all the time otherwise, and it slows everything down considerably. Seriously like 10 times slower to bounce a loop or song, and in my case the cpu started to get overloaded and the crackling in Reason reared it's ugly face. Took me a while to figure out, hope this helps someone else =)

Dumb question - fully understand it’s all 1s and 0s, but did you find your mix and master to sound different in Reason? The way it sums audio perhaps? Probably user error, but I find my mixes to not sound as clear in Reason vs other DAWs.

Thank you so much for going over mixing and mastering in reason, there's so little on RU-vid about it that it was very exciting to see someone with your expertise cover it. Btw there are a bunch of mastering presets in Reason for different types of sound, have you had a look at them at all?

I haven’t had a chance to check those out. This was my first time with the Reason DAW and I was basically trying to emulate what I do in Pro Tools. It certainly merits another look, for sure.

@@chadtuinman5743Yes in Reason 12. The mixers master compressor along with the mixers channel eq and channel dynamics section. Three separate rack devices. This way you use them in other DAWs with the Reason rack plugin.

Nice vid showing mastering in Reason. Thanks for doing this. If you have not, you might explore the warm saturation folder under the Scream 4 Patches folder. Dithering is also available when you export song as audio. I use a Rack Extension from Makeshift Design for metering, but the VST you show here looks nice too.

So would you use the same technique for different sounds individually? Do you ever EQ all the instruments separetely or do you always use the whole WAV file or bus all sounds to 1 master and EQ and apply these effects on that? Thank you!

So, in Reason menu "File>Export Song as Audio File" there is a choice to export as 24 bit (no dithering offered) or 16 bit (dithering is an option). Why not just export as 24 bit and forget about 16 bit altogether? This is one of the reasons (no pun intended) I only create in Reason. I export 24 bit in Reason and then master in Reaper. Reaper gives me a much better mastering workflow and higher quality mastering options.

Dithering isn’t necessary with reasons studio bcuz of the algorithm changes to the floating point and bit depth. This all happens in the background so you can just focus on creating, mixing and mastering 😆
@TheRealAudioProfessor
@TheRealAudioProfessor 2 года назад
I just ran a test to double-check, but the dithering you're referring to is the dithered mixer, when summing attenuated faders. This is something that other DAWs do as well. When exporting a 24-bit file to 16-bits, Reason will not add dither unless the box is checked. Dither in this stage is used to mask the quantization error when converting to a lower bit depth. That's why that box is there.
@mcdove
@mcdove 2 года назад
@@TheRealAudioProfessor that applies to exporting files for mixing in another DAW, after mastering you can just export your finish track as it’s already taken care of in the final bounced of the stereo track to be released.
@TheRealAudioProfessor
@TheRealAudioProfessor 2 года назад
But it's not. When you export a 24-bit file to 16-bits, the end result is a 16-bit file with no dithering applied at the 16-bit level. If you were to master like I did, without checking the "Dither" box, you would have low-level quantization error. Again, this is why Reason has that box there.
@mcdove
@mcdove 2 года назад
@@TheRealAudioProfessor I dont think you realized that There's a feature to export song as audio file but it's your world bro, knock yourself out. 👍
@TheRealAudioProfessor
@TheRealAudioProfessor 2 года назад
@@mcdove Yes, but you can’t export a 16-bit file from a 24-bit file that way. You almost certainly wouldn’t be able to add 16-bit level dither like you can with any other DAW.
