Zone 8/8, see how beetroot can mature in half a season: sow seeds undercover a month before the first growing weather, then 4-6 weeks later cover plants in an outdoor bed with fleece/row cover for early harvests. Sow again in early summer to plant after clearing spring veg. Tips on preparing roots and leaves to eat.More info in my books www.charlesdowding.co.uk/prod.... Filmed and edited by my son Edward Dowding February to May 2017, all at Homeaces, Somerset, UK edowding.net/
Finalist at The Gardening Oscars, London November 2017 in category "TV Broadcast of the Year".
See beetroot growing as one of many vegetables in this video about succeeding with early plantings • 1st & 2nd plantings PA... and watch for the second video of this series, appearing in December 2017.

Charles reminds me of my beloved father, who was a passionate farmer. Learning from him feels like learning from my father. As a kid I found it quite embarrassing, coming from a farmer‘s family. Later in life you come to understand your origin and the worth of what your parents showed you and taught you. I hope to have a very big garden some day. It is healthy in every way. 😊

I come from the same place. I was ashamed of my grandparents because others devalued them since they had pigs, chickens, and huge garden. Imagine that? Twisted values. Today I follow their footsteps and grow my own veggies.. I couldn’t be more proud of role models they have set up for me and my children. Land is a BLESSING FROM GOD! Blessings to all fellow farmers 😊❤

The beetroot is my absolute nemesis! It hates me! Probably because I am the most irregular waterer in the world......... but next year I WILL SUCCEED! 💪 By the way, I loooooooooove how the leaves sound when the beets were pulled, so crispy, perfectly cared for!! 😍 music to my ears (my kids declared me an idiot when I watched/listened to that bit if the video over and over and over again)

@Charles Dowding please don't use a kitchenknife like this again - ever! it scared the living daylight out of me for your fingers! ;-) and for the rest of the video: i actually belong(ed) to the type of people mentioned that only knew pickled beetroot before, until last year when i grew , harvested and ate my first selfgrown crop. your fine video just came in time to learn more, because this year it hasn't been going so well. my question is: you start early in feb. with a particularly suited variety, but how and how long can you resow, and how late can you harvest? tia, s.
@CharlesDowding1nodig

One thing I never really thought about until I started growing my own, was how much sugar they also put in pickled beetroot you buy in most stores. Its also worth mentioning and a funny story (but has a serious side too) that if you eat a lot of Beetroot, like I often do, your wee can SOMETIMES for some people turn dark. In fact when I first started eating Beetroot regulary, and a lot, this happened to me. I didn't know about this and it went nearly red so obviously worried, I went to the Dr, luckily the Dr asked me "Do you eat a lot of beetroot" and then we realized thats what it was. Thankfully. It doesn't seem to do it much to me anymore.

Thank you SO MUCH for this idea. After years of only knowing to direct-sowing beets, I decided to give this a try. I've never grown such beautiful, healthy beets. With presoaking, the seeds germinate quickly and get a strong start in the trays. Harvesting when the roots are about egg-sized, I got four harvests (each a week apart), with all but the last having the most beautiful, long-stemmed greens one could hope for. This is THE way I'll be growing beets from now on.

I love this idea of multi sowing the beets! I grew only 2 individual ones this year (2021) to push myself to grow something “I don’t care to eat” and try to expand my tastebuds, I have tried them pickled and roasted. They are both ‘ok’. Then in sept I tried a raw shredded beet and carrot salad with fresh herbs and vinaigrette & I’m a changed woman! Now I’m searching up how to grow beets and planning where and what varieties I’m going to grow in 2022 😁 This video has me so excited!!! Thank you Charles !

Beetroot is one of the most rewarding plants to grow for me. Its very easy and seems to tolerate both dry and wet spells.

My brother and I attempted growing beets this year in our west Texas gardens. They grow fantastic even now during our 90-100 degree Fahrenheit summer days. We can't grow most greens in the summer due to the heat, but beet greens are helping to fill that void! I had no idea they transplanted well, though. Gonna try that next! Thank you!

It's nice to know that transplanting beetroot is something you can do successfully! Seems like the prevailing wisdom is to always direct sow but here is the proof!
