Hi Steve from the UK. I have used dropbox for years, and often use copy link to send links via email to people who don’t have room in their drop boxes and are not willing to pay a little extra for the superb storage it offers. I also work with musicians who are not very technical and the idea of sending them a little gift through the post of access to a folder in my dropbox is just pure magic which I had not yet learnt about thank you so so much for that. Brilliant
Steve: I watched three videos on RU-vid that came up. All covered how to set up Dropbox, but you were the only one that explained the concept of: having-a-local-folder-&-anything-you-put-there-syncs. Others eplained how to install, set up accounts, etc. What I wanted to know was the concept. Thanks for hitting that first. So many forget!
Thank you, Steve, for all your video's. I always thought of myself as a computer geek, but with the speed and change in technology, I find myself more reactive than proactive when it comes to learning new things.
just started using drop box a few days ago , as requested from one of my you tube modeling friends . It was cool how I was able to use it to transfer music files to my phone and back to my editing software on my laptop .
I know this is an old post, but it is the most valuable post I have found for Dropbox!!! Great job!! I have a big NAS and a brother who has a business. Tips you pointed out has flipped me to get a Dropbox Professional account over Backblaze B2, Amazon S3, G-Suite Business, and others. I remember Dropbox way back and have used them, but not for quite a while. Thank you!
💥 I was on the fence about choosing Dropbox vs Google Drive as my main cloud storage. Watching your video *ASSURED* me that Dropbox is the right choice for me! Thank you so much to you and your video editor!!!
Thank you for your information on Dropbox ! I have asked many people to help me manage my limited space on my laptop and no one can't or won't. I was thinking about getting another laptop with a huge hard drive just for it. But, today your lesson comes in perfect timing. Christmas came early for me, this year. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge !
I’ve begun to use google drive for creating word documents/power points and for access to files I need that require editing . If it’s a PDF document , a receipt or anything I’ve already completed ( such as a paper in college ) then I drop it in Dropbox . I use amazon prime photos for most of my photo uploads but I keep all of my vacation photos in folders in Dropbox. I have a iPhone SE a iPad Air and a Kindle Fire HD 8 so it’s great to know there are Dropbox apps for all of those platforms
Hello Steve! Great video as always. But please note, as you live on the apple world, you do not have many information on Windows world (in which I live at work and at home). I have Microsoft office 365 which gives a bonus of 1 Terabite of free storage at Onedrive. As you said, now dropbox is a very old friend. My new friend is Onedrive and it does exactly the same stuff, with a bigger advantage: Better and more intuitive design. Currently is by far the best solution. You should try it. Regards
Great insight on your tech videos! Very informative and useful.. we use Dropbox for our design company and it's the easiest platform to share files between our team and our clients. We particulary just started using the showcase feature for our clients presentations. The data we collect from showcase is a great tool to understand how our clients interact with our ideas
Hi Steve, amazing video. Keep in mind that with File Requests submitters can send files up to 2 GB on Basic accounts or 20 GB on paid accounts. I was looking for a Dropbox video back in May and commented on your Google Keep video about it, so watching this was pretty cool.
Thanks Steve - this video has made me realize (1) just how much I have underutilized Drop Box (2) just how useful it can really be (3) just how simple it is, and (4) how important this product SHOULD be to my Cyber and PC existence. Much appreciated!
Thanks Steve! I too have used Dropbox for years. But that "file sharing" tip was fabulous. And I think I may paid for an upgraded account as well. I love Dropbox.
Before I start; just wanted to say that I really like your videos. You make understanding different tech so easy; and you do it with style... keeping me engaged and learning at a fast pace. That said: Here are all the specs so that you know what devices and software I'm currently using: iPhone 8+, Windows 10, Windows 10 Dropbox extension, iPhone Dropbox application, both cloud and local (PC - one with Windows 10) Dropbox locations, Facebook, You Tube, Latitude E6230 lap top with 64 bit processing. I'm having difficulty with viewing drop box videos both on my PC; and on Facebook. Solved the PC issue (Windows 10) by downloading the VLC application. Apparently, windows 10 video applications don't have the necessary codexes or whatever. Whatever that means. Anyway, that's solved after I took the advice of installing VLC; but now: I can't VIEW my video on Facebook; but seem to have no problems uploading it and getting it approved by Facebook. I haven't been able to find any plugin; or any Google suggestions that don't have a ton of steps to follow that might screw up my computer in the process. I came across the notion of a Dropbox icon on Facebook; but can't seem to find the supposed icon. Facebook itself wasn't that helpful; and other You Tube videos seem to skirt the issue almost entirely. From this video, I got the idea of searching Chrome to see if there was a parallel plugin/extension or whatever they like to call it - just like the Dropbox for Gmail that you showed us. There wasn't; or if there was - couldn't find it. The only thing I can think of now, is to try to by pass Facebook, by first uploading to You Tube; and seeing if they have a way to convert the video to a format conducive to viewing on Facebook. I don't really know anything about video file formatting or conversion. I just know that it happens to be a big deal. I COULD simply post a link to drop box; but I don't have that much space and I will erase stuff as time goes on. So a link will stop working after a while; so, instead, I copied files over from my local drop box to my PC videos folder; and this is where I have issues both viewing on my own PC (without VLC); and viewing on Facebook. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
Steve is one of those cowboys who stores his bullets in Dropbox so he can travel light, and then when he needs to duel another cowboy his old friend Dropbox comes in handy xD
Very useful video for us! We're moving to Google Workspace and although Google Drive is good, Dropbox has been rock solid over the years so we're staying with it. Cheers 👍🏻
Thank you Steve for talking to us and not At us. I skipped past so many videos before I stopped here. Very informative and engaging. I don’t suppose you have one that tells us how to distinguish our private Dropbox - free version to our works Dropbox? I am not quite sure what they can and can’t see in my photos/videos on my IPad. Or even if I am not just putting some files into my own? I think they are in the right place then it tells me my Dropbox is full, so that’s obviously my free version and not my works link. Very new to this.
As a freelance musician, I've used it quite a bit for sharing songs and set lists. It also works with Setlist Helper which allows me to link MP3s to my created set lists. Very useful.
Greetings Steve, excellent very helpful video even for a non techy person as me! I only wished if there were features listed with time frames... I will definetely use "file request" option as well as "copy link " options. it will save a lot of time!
Thanks so much for this. There were a few things I wanted to learn, being a Dropbox flounderer, and now have to be more responsible and organized. What a concept. So the things I was looking for was how to designate those getting my document will be able to edit or not. Yep. And I love the File Request element. That is brilliant. And think I will move my dropbox to a more spacious drive to fee up operating space. Now what to see your other videos. Am sharing this with my collaborators...a 240 page coffee table book. Guess what size the readers' pdf is? 25 megs.
I’m glad I connected to you. I use Dropbox . I’ve got all Apple devices. My Mac is seven years old and slow. I think tweeting Dropbox may Inc its productivity.
I have a box account that I created to share between work and home but now I use google drive exclusively. Cloud drives are great. In addition, I bought a networked western digital drive that sits here at home. Problem is to remember where everything is. So many places for files to be, Box, separate usb drives, Google drive, etc. Yikes.
I made comments on a drop box file and Right now I don't see those comments, your video does not mention this feature, That is why I watched this video. I will look into drop box again and the files I am trying to edit.
Great video. Thank you. I have tried DB on and off. I was always afraid to delete something from DB cloud because I am concerned that if I delete it on the cloud (DB) then it will ALSO delete it on my external or wherever my images are stored. I finally deleted the app from my laptop so that I would not fill up my LP as well as accidentally erase my original files.
Great man . i always find your videos the most informative and clear explanation. I have windows 10 and have dropbox on my C drive. But I could not find preferences so that I change the location ofmy folders to other hard disc drive. Please let me know where is it/
HI Steve, You mentioned your "Start Up" folder and needing to keep it from clutter. I know that my Start Up folder has gobs of programs, services and other junk opening up and running. I am also ignorant of what I actually need and what I can remove from my Start Up folder. Question: is it possible to list what programs, services and other stuff needs to be in the Start Up folder? Otherwise I will need to get the GEEK guys to come over and do that for me. Thank you
Steve, I watched your video and learned several new things that are good. But I have a PC and do not see all the controls: gear/ preferences that you have on the mac. It was hard trying to follow that. I do see some controls with a right click on the folders, files, on my computer. I find the webbrowser site difficult to manage any preferences. I've also seen your video on ZOOM and that helped me set all that up. thanks for doing these. thanks.
Great info. One problem I have with Dropbox is duplicate photos. Does Dropbox have a duplicate photo (of file) finder that would allow me to remove duplicates? If not, do you know of a good app that could be used to accomplish that task within Dropbox? Thanks for the info.
Steve Thanks so much! I was not sure if Dropbox would bombard my hard drive on its own...but I see you have to download the desktop app for that. Question: If you download a file from dropbox cloud, does the cloud delete it there? or...is there a disappearing act in the cloud where you can't recover a file?
Why would one choose Dropbox over Google Drive? I have used Dropbox, Evernote and OneDrive in the distant past, but it was just too many similar services. Other than my OneNote folder, I pretty much just use Google Drive. What am I missing?
Srtill picking it up, learning has a better idea if not ideal sharing. Can not even remember how long I have been listenin or even where it all started may have been a month activity?
Thank you for this video, - when we set a file to share, then change to not share, can we re-share it with the people again so we can keep it private in between? Also, I set my sharing folder to one client. but another client got a notice the first client was seeking access?? How did this happen?? I never included that client in the 2nd shared folder but 1st client got the message that the 2nd client was seeking access. I cannot have this happen, do you have any suggestions? Should I provide a password protect with each one?
Hi great video tutorial... is there anyway to add passwords protection to the files and folders to avoid unintentional deletion and of course for additional security?...thanks
How does Dropbox decide which files or folder is the "true" or "master copy? For example, if I accidentally delete files in a folder on one computer but they are present on two other devices, what rule does it follow in preserving contents? Will it always mirror the empty folder or the two full ones? Is it chronologically the most recent change that's preserved? If I add Dropbox to a new device and sync it, won't all my data be deleted since the new drive is empty, assuming it follows the chronological rule? Can I signify one device drive to be the master Dropbox copy to protect my data? I'm confused and to be frank a bit scared!
I have been using dropbox for over 10 years now, thank you for sharing these amazing tips. May I ask which software you are using to switch between camera and screen? Thank you
selective sync is only available with Dropbox Premier. $200 per year. 2x the base Dropbox for basically one additional feature and some extra storage. Seems too pricey to me.
Selective sync is a feature of the plus-subscription with 10 bucks/month. Maybe you referred to the professional subscription with this doubled price tag - with a professional account you can use smart sync, which means that you are able to keep the files purely online with no additional space-consumption on your hard disk / SSD.
I just spent 20 min trying to figure out how top find and install dropbox for gmail..... you could have elaborated, you spent more time explaining how to use it than you did on how to get it
I have used it many years ago to exchange files in ou Club. Changed computer and so lost it. Thought it would be useful to copy files between PC and laptop. It took about 2 hours to install on Windows 7 laptop. As soon as it completed installation, I deleted it. How much of my computer resources was it going to use? Went back to memory stick.
Steve, why do presenters talk so fast and move their cursors so fast during all of these demos? Your presentation is great but even as I hit pause and replay, it all just goes so fast for me. Is there a site that slows down the teaching process? Thank you for your help.
Hi I have Dropbox plus. I just bought a new iPad Air and I cannot set up my Dropbox Plus in it. It won’t accept my email address. What should I do? Thank you
