Great video! I am an artist and photographer currently looking to apply for a first grant with the Canada Council for the Arts. Thank you for sharing your tips! ❤
Thanks so much for taking the time to make a video tackling the whole grant writing experience…it’s actually really nerve wracking so this video was really appreciated!
Thank you! Your video is helpful. I'm about to apply for a grant to get me to Paris, as I was invited to live paint and give a class at the International Art Symposium in Paris 2020.
Thanks for sharing Dani! I am in the middle of writing my first grant (BC arts council) and honestly your video really helped reduce some anxiety during this process!!
One thing that puzzled me a lot while looking at the grant process was what type of financial return I'm expecting from making this project. I'm applying for visual art research in the ''new professional'' section of the programs and, in the budget section, they ask to explain what I will get back (like revenue or sales, maybe?) But if it's research as a very new artist in the field, isn't it kinda unrealistic to expect any revenue from it at all? I understand they want some form of insurance their investment is worth it, but if I was sure to make money out of it, I wouldn't need a grant in the first place 🤷♀️
Great video. One question though: Will grants cover basic living expenses like rent, food, etc? Or can you only apply it to expenses directly related to your art? I'm guessing the government isnt very likely to pay my rent for a year so I can write my first novel? Even if I have tangentially-related work to show them, like multiple blogs that I run?
Hi. I was thinking of applying for the sake of completing a novel. I’ve been working on the rough draft which I plan to complete before applying, and the reason for this is because of time restraints (it’s a one year grant) and because I want to focus the year of granted work on research (travel to specific sites, speaking to professionals, elders, etc), revising my work to reflect my research, and also to work back and forth with an editor (possibly more than one) in order to make my novel as best as I possibly can. You had mentioned that people can’t apply for something that they’ve already started, however, you also said that somebody was able to receive a grant for their first rough draft. I’m looking to do a bit of the opposite. I would like to complete my first rough draft now and then to use the grant money to really flesh out, rewrite and complete the story. Do you think that this is possible?
P Natty hi! I’d be to help but I would need a little more detail. Why don’t you send me a message on Instagram (@DaniAlexandriaMusic) or Twitter (@DaniAlexMusic) with what specifically the grant is and I will try and help as best I can
