Photographers should learn how to master all types of light, while a soft light can be beautiful, a hard light can create amazing results.

Great series on shots. Marisa is such a pro. I'd like to hear about a shoot from her perspective, or maybe a collaborative protective. How do you decide on the feel, hair, clothes, poses? How does the model approach the creation of the photos along with the photographer?

Cool series of shots, Daniel. (Marisa is such a ham... Love it!) As you said, the contrast was great overall, and color-wise too, with the red lipstick versus Marisa's striking blue eyes. Good results and yes I use hard lights great for revealing shapes with the contrast they made. I made a shoot with a model in an interior pool and I was very please with the results. At a certain point 4 strobes with no diffusion where used. The angles are the main point of this technic. Great work both of you and Marisa is so versatile, great talent.

I think the mixing of hard and soft light is often overlooked. The soft element coming from the bounce off the floor. For me I tend to combine a strip box for overall lighting and then a 10 deg grid on my key to pick out the detail. On my B2 heads it is a nice combination to work with.

Good video. Anything with lighting tips is appreciated. Don't care if it's something I already know because it might be new to many others and it'll help them which is all that matters. And regarding Marisa - She gave herself two thumbs up so sure bring her back. Worked with a few professional models and they are a joy to photograph. They know how to pose, comfortable in front of camera, & take directions well with very little explaining or examples. Maybe include a few tips in an incoming video on how you give experienced & unexperienced subjects (single or family portrait) directions.

I'd love to know how last curtain flash is sharper than first curtain? Surely it just changes the instant that the photo is frozen, and if something is changing/moving then first curtain would allow more accuracy rather than last curtain when you have to guess what will be the situation by the time the exposure finishes?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
@DanielNortonPhotographer 5 лет назад
It doesn’t always - but in this case it does because it puts the flashed image “on top” of the blur in a sense. But yes, for composition reasons 1st curtain is generally best if the camera or subject is moving

I was likely speaking of working on a job, not a test shoot such as this. Context is important 😊

Just wondering why u placed the c-stand in front of the model when it can place at the left side so the u won’t be block by the stand.?

I wanted to keep the light centered on her , if it were to one side, she would limited in her movements due to shadows

I mean the vertical part of the stand on the side and the arm extends towards the center of the middle

The stand is not in front of her, it probably looks that way because of the position of the video camera.. the very first tee image I am shooting her dead on.

Execellent shoot. Marissa is great as always but. . . . . .what else is new? The only thing I would have changed is the color of Marissa's bra and/or the blouse. The showing black bra became the center of attention of many of the pictures and took away from her face.

Not a fan of hard light, it reminds me when I was a beginner with my bare flashgun lol once learned how to defuse the light it's hard to get back to that.

That’s a fairly common thought process - soft light is “better” while each type of light has its place and vibe

Professor Norton. 1:33 Marissa is distracting me... and I like it. :-) She did it again 10:20 :-) I like the content of your videos and th blurred pics were awesome (not like my blurred pics). I click on your videos because of the lessons, but I'll be honest, a certain percent of that decision is related to Marissa's charm. She's truly a pro and the next second, goofing around. :-) Some pics were a bit overexposed? or was that the effect of looking the preview instead of the 1:1 pic?

Thanks! Yes, the TTL and angle occasionally produces hot exposures- but within the dynamic range of the camera so still usable
