In this lesson, Helen demonstrates her technique for painting metals (copper, brass, silver). She emphasizes the importance of a single light source when painting metals, explaining how this light source provides the strong contrasts necessary for visualizing and rendering metals. She outlines her unique approach to painting metals. Unlike painting glass, where the highlight is added last, Helen teaches us to begin with the highlight when painting metals, marking it as a crucial step in achieving a realistic appearance. She also stresses the importance of keeping the highlight color mix vibrant by mixing it quickly.
This video is a valuable resource for artists looking to master the depiction of metallic surfaces.

Wonderful episode! Helen looks fantastic in that turtleneck sweater! In fact, it looks like she is wearing the same sweater in her self portrait? I adore her beautiful smile at the end. Just marvelous from start to finish! Thank you so much! Lisa

While describing what she is doing and why, making jokes, and telling stories all at the same time. And she is painting very quickly to fit the time constraints. That is a lot of talent and experience.

Sadly, Helen passed away in 1994 and cannot respond to you directly. It's interesting to note that Helen occasionally mentioned being in the company of left-handers like Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, and even Sandy Koufax. I believe she admired Koufax for his legendary pitching aim, akin to the precision artists require with a brush.

Helen did finally admit in one of her last lessons that she doesn't know how to make soup. However, offering to teach soup making was her closing remark in almost all of her lessons.

What paint, i wonder, does she draw with? Looks like black or dark paint off her palette, but doesn't seem to mix with or dirty subsequent colours.
@HelenVanWyk

Great question. Helen uses a dark color, black likely, thinned with turpentine (kinda like an ink) for the initial placements. This mix dries very quickly. Those crazy-looking placement lines are nearly dry by the time she starts working with the oils. Give it a try. Thank you for your support; it is appreciated.

Thank you for reply... whoever you are?!! :) I supposed it must be thinned oil paint, and thinking about it some drying time can be edited out of vids.

"You actually hit upon why people love Helen so much. As Helen herself explains in one of lessons, "Just watching me do it is not really as beneficial as learning some basic principles. While I paint, and you watch how I do it, I'm going to tell you why I do it." Her ability to teach while painting is exactly what students want in a painting lesson. Students don’t want to just watch someone paint; they want to understand what the painter is doing and why. We appreciate your feedback and hope you find value in her approach!"
