Very instructive video. You*ve explained the functioning so well and give a lot of hints for troubleshooting. As a german consumer, I observe that Miele is going to ruin its reputation since 2002 - the introduction year of the damned alloy drum spiders and many other construction details. I LOVE my 27 year old Miele 912. Nothing to repair except a new door seal and a set of shock absorbers.

I have a 19 year old Italian made Candy, which cost £199.99. Much better value than an over-priced Miele!

We replaced an early Miele after 19 years (bought new in 1984) due to the replacement cost of a clock work mode selector. But also, the bearings were on the way out. Bearings do not last forever. IMO spiders are less of an issue than bearings. Which are difficult to replace due to person hour cost. Alloy doesn't rust. It does work harden. And suffer from chemicals I presume. Alloy saves power due to it having less mass. I don't think alloy was the problem with that spider, IMO it was that it was the spider itself was not a robust enough design. Perhaps later Miele machines have different spider designs. Note too that the older machines had brushes, which wear out, while modern machines don't have wearable brushes. If you buy a more modern Miele, a simple fix for spider apprehension, is don't spin the machine at full speed (many do 1600 RPM now). And don't run the machine at full capacity.

We change aluminium drum spider on W 3000 Gala (year 2010) from old steel part, and all fits now perfect. Hi from Czechia
@Martindyna
@Martindyna 2 месяца назад
Yes it seems that Miele have become less open about technical details of their machines, e.g. they used to declare the material of the outer drum (can be a fibre glass / plastic on cheaper machines rather than stainless steel (probably grade 316) on more expensive ones) and don't now. It would be better to be more rather than less open and state the material the Spider is made from imo.

@@douglaslin5469 Aluminium spiders typically fail due to crevice corrosion, which occurs when aluminium becomes coated with moisture retaining biofilm grime that excludes oxygen (bacteria, lint, mould, fabric conditioner and liquid detergent residue etc etc etc). So basically not keeping the washing machine clean enough. Crevice corrosion is electrochemical process, the biofilm excludes oxygen and since it retains moisture also acts as an electrolyte, with the differences in oxygen concentration causing current to flow, the areas with minimal oxygen get eaten away.

Fantastic video and well narrated. I did exactly the same to dismantle a Miele washing machine model W340 but I didn't have the hoist so made a rig by wrapping a rope around the outer drum added a piece of wood as a lift bar then manually lifted it out of the frame. Quite a struggle without help, but did use some timber to lever up the drum in order to disconnect the springs. I believe the weights are cast iron not concrete. All in all a very well designed machine. 4 spring suspension is much better than the 2 found on most other makes. I also had fun trying to spring the facia panel from the front controller but achieved it without removing the spring clips you showed, next time I’ll lookout for them. The final comment is a negative one, in that the aluminium spider is the weak point on this machine. Mine was cracked thru in the same positions as you demonstrated. It was the only thing wrong with the machine, even the bearings were still good. As you commented an extremely expensive replacement over £500 for the drum and spider assembly, so the machine was recycled and a new one purchased. Unfortunately after making the decision to buy a new machine I found a company who were offering a stainless steel replacement spider for a reasonable price. I was unable to follow up on that as the new machine arrived the next day. I can forward the spider details if you would find them of interest. I applaud you for taking the trouble to dismantle the machine and to offer all the good parts for sale, saves everything going to landfill. Well done.

I don't have hoist either, but you don't really need a hoist if you detach/remove the 2 front heavy weights 1st. Drums lift out easily after everything else removed first although still fair weight in the 4 arms cast iron spider back of the external drum from that supports the spindle and pulley wheel. In my case the inner drum spindle was so bad it had broken clear of the centre portion. and was removed prior to the external drum.

Seems meile want them to fail..created weakest link. Most metallurgists know aluminium corrodes when exposed to hot water. For miele to state its the detergents fault is utter nonsense.. what a cop out! If this is known to them then why in bloody he'll they persist in using a questionable metal. Nothing else corrodes because it is made from stainless steel that the spider should also be made from as it is immense in hot soapy water. Disgusting that miele do that especially a German company to boot!

Thank you for sharing this video. I used it to take apart my machine, which was making an awful noise. It turned out to be the same issue as the machine in your video, so I had to scrap it but at least I know that I didn’t replace a machine that could have been easily fixed. Every other part on our 13(?) year old machine was sound so it’s a shame they used the alloy casting. Thanks again for the video.

A few tips the pipe from the pump to the overflow gets blocked up and causes weird faults. Also, remove the pressure pipe chamber to avoid breaking it on the lift out. Mark the drum if you intend to reassemble the machine. The old cast iron spyders will fit in a lot of the newer machines. But some cast spiders have a hidden magnet for balance detection. Early spider failure is indicated by swelling and the drum starts rubbing lightly on the door seal. The early models weigh a lot more than the newer ones due to a heavy steel cabinet. Solid as a rock and thick enamel. You defiantly need a winch for Miele. Cast iron no concrete.

I've had this dilemma before where I've changed the bearings and then found that there is no seal available. I put some Vaseline in the gap between the bearing and the seal the reason I use Vaseline if it leaks out through the seal it would not stain the clothes where grease would and it will also help prevent any water ingress towards the bearings as that is what the seal is designed for. What would really help me to get my video seen as I'm no IT expert is to either share the channel or at least post it to your friends my videos might not be RU-vid superstars, but they save Appliances from the scrapheap. Great video, very well explained! The machine seems to be so well-built, but at the same time the spider is made of aluminium, as if built to fail due to corrosion. I cannot understand why nobody seems to make the original spider out of stainless steel. However I do like the fact that the outer tub can easily be opened, for access to the spider. I remember the Merloni machines (normally labelled Servis in the UK) used to be opened in the same way, but from the back of the tub.

why build a Rolls-Royce of a washing machine and then create a bad reputation by overpricing parts deliberately
@Martindyna
@Martindyna 8 месяцев назад
Miele UK used to be open about the outer drum material on their website; the cheaper machines had a fibreglass / plastic type of material while the higher models had a stainless steel outer drum. Seems a retrograde step to now not be open with their prospective customers, they should state the spider material too so that customers can make informed choices. Makes me wonder what spider material the Ebac washing machines have (made in the UK). May be aluminium since they don't state the material which they surely would if it was stainless steel.
@Martindyna
@Martindyna 8 месяцев назад
The rotating wash basket / drum has to be in stainless steel (or enamelled steel as they were years ago) to avoid marking the clothes of course. The drive spider does not and therefore cheaper materials are used. I always hoped that the top of the range Mieles had stainless steel spiders but no where is the material stated which is plain stupid tbh since if they did state the material it would put Miele at a competitive advantage assuming they use a superior material like grade 316 stainless steel (which I imagine the drum is made of). Actually grade 303 / 304 stainless steel would probably be OK for the spider, I'm not sure.

Unfortunately this guide doesn't help with the 365. I've taken the screws out but the panel doesn't come off. From what I can see there are clips on the underneath that are holding it on/in. I don't know how you're supposed to remove these and don't want to pry in case I snap them. I've tried getting someone out to fix it but nobody wants to know as they say they don't repair this brand. All that has happened is that the door seal on the bottom has been pulled out and so it leaks and turns off. I reckon if I can get the panel off I can just take the seal off and put it back on and everything will be fine. Unfortunately I can't find a manual or guide for this machine or similar. Which is funny because there are loads of guides for phones and such, even when they've not long released but it's really difficult to find one for a washing machine.

I enjoyed this tear down of the Miele as I had never seen one under the skin so to speak. You can see why they are so expensive with a separate free standing support frame. It’s a shame they whole machine is rendered uneconomic to repair because of a corroded cast alloy spider. Had a Bosch where the spider broke quite suddenly after about seven years. The inner drum scraped at the out sealed plastic drum, filled the drain pump with spaghetti like shavings and likewise was uneconomic to repair. A simple pressed stainless steel spider would avoid this sort of problem.

It is amazing how a company that puts so much thought into the production of the machine with fantastic access for engineers then goes and deliberately puts a spider in that makes the whole repair process. Totally unacceptable. Yes this is a better design spider than I have seen in a lot of other machines, but they only cost £20 trade not £300 I guarantee the build cost of that spider is no more than £20-£30, but then they go and stick A miele pricetag on it, they're not allowing repair ability. They are not environmentally friendly and in my opinion they do damage to their own brand doing this.

@@How-to-repair Yes Miele seem to be becoming over confident that people will always buy from them. They used to declare the material of the outer drum, now they don't (the data sheet no longer mentions any construction details). They certainly should state the material of the drum spider then one can buy further up the range to get a quality spider.

@@How-to-repair I'm a appliancetech and I'm seeing this quite often in combination with long term useage of low temp programs and buildups of gunk around the drum/spider. This "eats" the spider witch acts as a sacrificial anode. Never seen this happen on a machine that is treated well with no residues inside! I totally agree that this could be made in a higher quality material(as a Miele should be), but it also depends much of the right maintenance/use. Miele is anyhow way too overpriced(both parts and products), just to make people NOT want to fix their machines! They make them "repairable" but sets the price so high they're sure peopple scrap it and pays for a new one. I'm more a Asko-guy, and the drum/Quattro-construction is significantly better than the traditional machines. But I've seen spiders break on these too, as a direct consequence of gunk-buildup. At least it's not so often on Asko as on Miele, Samsung and AEG. And the parts are also much more affordable compared with Miele.

As the technician stated at the beginning of this video, if you paid a service tech to remove this machine from your home, take to a shop, trouble shoot, perform this work, replace the necessary parts, reassemble and return to your home - a new washing machine would be the best solution. If this was an LG top washer like I had, it would go straight to the recycler.

The problem with the whole industry now is the cost of parts for things like spiders and the labour cost make it very uneconomical to keep an appliance going for a good period of time we seem to have moved into a throw away society

@@How-to-repair no worries, thanks for answering. My w5741 has just died. I overloaded it on the weekend. Nothing tripped at the SB but a bad burning smell came from the machine. I've smelt this from other electrical things over the years, its a capacitor usually blown. Machine now has no power, I'm wondering where the fuse and caps are located. I can see one cap at the back right corner, but it looks good, but I'll test it anyway. I have a spare front control board, hence my initial question.

Aluminium is a reactive metal, wrong choice by miele. If was made from stainless steel,like the drums, I would not be having this discussion . Don't blame problems on approved detergent used. Ridiculous that miele are blaming me.. I could have caused the problem by taking it apart. Miele is a Ridiculous company to deal with. Next blaming climate change perhaps

In 2005 I bought the cheapest washing machine in the Argos catalogue. A £199.99 Italian made Candy. 19 years later, it's STILL going strong! ... Who says modern machines don't last? The problem is, people don't look after their machines. They close them up and allow them to go mouldy. They don't run maintenance washes. They don't descale. They allow their machines to rust. They overload them. Why do you think my Candy has lasted so long? Because I look after it! EDIT: I would point out that most people's washing machines are NOT raised off the floor, as in this video, they're sitting on it! ... Additionally, most people DON'T have a "hoist!" Best way to "save a small fortune" is to NOT buy a Miele! ... I refer you to my 19 year old £199.99 Candy! ... I'm no mug! 👍🤣 Candy's original carbons lasted 15 years! ... I replaced them 4 years ago, after the machine wouldn't spin. They were "stumps." Candy's original 19 year old belt is fine.

The Miele machines where designed to last for 20 years and ours is showing the bearing started to collapse. We have the w500 and I'm considering getting a refurbished miele that's newer but has the ability to be controlled by WiFi, so we can make use of the 7 p per Kwh offered on octopus to those who have electric cars and smart meters. I've heard that the later machines are not a good as the early ones due to suppliers in China, cheaper components and built in Poland ( I have no problem with the Polish people, it's only what I have read on the forums). Wish I could find out without you having to tear it right down to the last couple of components.

If you had to buy a washing machine today, whether new or used, which model, series or manufacturer would you choose?
@How-to-repair
@How-to-repair 5 месяцев назад
Great question Chris, but how old should I get? If I'm buying new today, I would have to look at the financial side more than anything else, or consider the warranty offered by LG on the £300 machines or Ebac on more expensive machines, as they come with a seven-year warranty. If I want cheap and good value for money, then I'll be looking at Beko. Secondhand machines, anything really made in the 1980s, were all good producers. The Hotpoint 18 series, the Zanussi with the split cabinet in the middle, and the older Miele models were also good. The big problem is that everything that is manufactured today is only designed for selling the machine, not to last. In other words, they say they're environmentally friendly because they use less water and energy, but the fact is the machine ends up on the scrapheap after five years. It seems to be that all manufacturers care about today is selling volume, not building things to last. What would really help me to get my video seen as I'm no IT expert is to either share the channel or at least post it to your friends my videos might not be RU-vid superstars, but they save Appliances from the scrapheap. Share and help us fight appliance waste! @chris-hs1yu please remember to subscribe to our channel as that really helps us ru-vid.come432SAb2g08 Thanks, Paul 👍

about the drum and spider ... "it's very well built?! ... about the only part in the whole machine that's completely gone (and no - being in water and detergent should NOT be a surprise for such part) .. what's 'well built' about that
@mels8966
@mels8966 25 дней назад
That spider has failed like that as a direct result of all that grime (biofilm) that's been allowed to accumulate on the back of the tub, which has induced crevice corrosion. Leave the door and draw open between washes and use a powder detergent preferably one with oxygen bleach (which kills microbes) will help keep the machine clean and it will last much longer. Residue from fabric conditioner and liquid detergents contribute to the biofilm grime. It's an electrochemical process, the biofilm coating traps stagnant moisture on the surface and creates differences in dissolved oxygen concentration which causes a difference in electrical potential, so doesn't require dissimilar metals. Chlorine in the water will speed it up and some types of aluminium alloy are more susceptible than others.
