Hola Dr. Danny, I found myself laughing out loud with you when you were talking about hablaba and it made me think back to when I was taking lessons in class at the Spanish institute in Manchester. Your teaching method and clarity of explanation is what makes me a dedicated student of your lessons. The great advantage your method has for me is that during class based lessons I couldn't take good notes and listen to the teacher's explanations at the same time, whereas I just pause, rewind and repeat as required to gain maximum benefit from your lessons. The only element I miss is that I am not speaking Spanish at the moment and this is something I have to address. P.S. escribiendo mi cuaderno di tablas!

English so much more economic and simple, learn two words 'used to' plus the present tense verb, as opposed learning a whole new two forms of verb endings with all the exceptions. It's literally hundreds of extra words to remember.

@jhonny1392
@jhonny1392 3 года назад
Hi, Arnab. I'm from Chile, South America. About your request it dosen't go an article before *cartas* because if you do so, this phrase sounds NOT RIGHT. In your example this would be *Yo escribía LAS cartas todas las semanas* and in this case the LAS article is not necesary and gramatically is incorrect. However, in other sense of this same phrase it would be necesary to add the LAS article, but not in the sense your example is written. Cheers, John from Santiago de Chile. BTW, a more accurate translation to "I wrote letters every week" would be *Yo escribía cartas cada semana*
@Leonardo-1
@Leonardo-1 3 года назад
@@jhonny1392 Arnab did not say: each week. She said: every week. And yes you can use the article LAS cartas and the sentence wont be wrong or incorrect. Yo le escribiá las cartas a mi abuela todas las semanas. In that sentence LAS is perfectly correct and the imperfect does not get lost. ONE LOVE!

¡Hola Dr. Evans! ¡Muchas Gracias, profesor!

The best explanation I have heard defining the difference between the preterite and imperfect is to think of it like time flowing as a river the _ongoing_ flow of the river is the imperfect from left to right. But the stones / pebbles / bricks to cross the river are single points in the river. If you're referring to the flow of the river, it's imperfect (it all looks the same / very similar), but the pebble is only in one place

Hi Danny, I really enjoy your videos- you explain things very simply but I can't get my head around why clock time in the past is the imperfect. If I have understood correctly, the imperfect is something that used to happen, continuously in the past so how can eg it was seven pm at night be eran las siete en la noche? To me, it should be in the preterite as it was only seven once? I know it's the imperfect, just can't get my head around it.

From how I have been learning, if I was to say, “they were studying” in Spanish, I would say “estaban estudiando”.

What about a video about imperfect vs past progressive? “I was finishing my dinner”. Is it the past progressive a single event that when it is done will be the pretérito? ‘“I finished dinner”.
