Welcome to Storycomic Presents! In our milestone 300th episode, I'm delighted to introduce the globally acclaimed Artistic Director of VOCES8, Barney Smith. I'm your host, Barney Smith, from storycomic.com, and today we delve into the remarkable journey of this renowned musical talent.
Trained in Basel/Scholl and celebrated as a countertenor, conductor, and Artistic Director, Barney has left an indelible mark on the music world. His latest solo album, 'Bach', released in February 2023, is a testament to his multifaceted skillset. While known for his role with VOCES8, conducting orchestras and choirs worldwide, and teaching, Barney's lockdown experience ignited his solo career.
'Bach' brings together JS Bach's finest compositions for the alto voice, accompanied by a stellar ensemble of the UK's leading Baroque chamber musicians, under the guidance of Bojan Čičić. The album traces a thematic arc from Candlemas to the Resurrection, capturing the timeless beauty of Bach's compositions.

Maybe I didn't get it, but it seemed like Barnaby's dialectic with respect to post-covid performance was CDs vs live performance. In fact, what makes voces8 so accessible is that they often perform on VIDEO, so you can SEE as well as hear them on their RU-vid and other online performances. Plus there's the fact that, although he was somewhat self-effacing about it, he's also become a top notch sound engineer, and has acquired very good equipment, and these also contribute substantially to the accessibility of voces8. With great visuals and great sound, their internet performances are just about as good as hearing them live.

Loved every moment of this excellent interview. It gives a wonderful insight into what motivates Barney as such a creative and dedicated musician, both singer and conductor, and of course a little backstage glimpse of Voces 8, my absolutely favourite ensemble. Thankyou

Brilliant interview! Barnaby (the singer!) has such a humorous and engaging personality - as well as being insanely talented. The other Barney asked interesting questions which resulted in us getting a real insight into Barnaby's life. I would love to have heard what kind of impact having a baby son has had. I can imagine that leaving him whilst touring must be tough.

VOCES8 have not been the same since Eleonore Cockerham left the group! 😭😭

I felt the same; but each change introduces a new person who grows into the role, and in due course seems just as vital as Eleonore did. Molly is great! That said, I shall be shattered if and when Andrea ever leaves.

Totally unnecessary comment, Sir.

They may change, but still produce beautiful music. Different doesn't mean bad.

I stumbled on this by accident. What a lovely interview! It really was like a couple of blokes having a chat in the pub. Really relaxed and yet really insightful. On the “Who’s best?” issue, Voces8 will inevitably change personnel, just like Kings Singers etc. Each incarnation will be a bit different. I might prefer one group to another but I am not the important one here. As a bit of a singer myself, I understand how difficult it must be to learn the repertoire that’s always been done one way by your predecessor. You might be able to improve it by being a bit different but risk upsetting people. That’s why we have directors - someone to carry the can for supporting or repressing change. If you don’t like it, blame the Boss not the individual!
