What is the disease process if the nitrogen washout is lower than predicted value ? 75% of predicted

Is 2:59 why emphysema patients have pursed lip breathing? Is this why they create PEEP?

why would the closing volume be greater in small airways diseases? It seems like the closing volume would be less than normal if the airways. Thanks for this video!! This concept is a tricky one to understand!

I guess that's because small airways in the lower lung will close earlier than usual, probably due to shift in equal pressure point. And since the lower airways are now closed, only the air from apical will go out through the trachea, which has higher nitrogen concentration. So in conclusion, the slope of phase 4 will reach earlier than usual. Hope that helps!

@@drsanyamkhurana Thank you for responding! I think this makes a bit more sense.

Most probably because the smaller airways may have obstruction or restriction and thus amt of air occupied by them will be less which will result in expired volume being more than usual (25% of vital capacity) hope it helps 👍

Because of gas trapping, reduced elasticity due to age or disease means it takes longer for the inhaled gas to be cleared, thus greater closing volume
