Its actually amazing how he could recognize repeating patterns of the number without searching for them.

I love the fact that he lays the foundation that he is not super human and its all to do with techniques and training. Such humbleness.

I agree. The brain is a pattern recognition system par excellence. Everything we see, hear, taste and touch are merely a series of patterns from which the brain must make sense.

Thanks for sharing this video. Wished I would have found out about this during discards ago. Today I have tested this trick and I was amazed how well this actually works. I want to learn this to improve my general memory in remembering people, names, dates, for day to day in life activities. Now this video is covering how to remember numbers and cards. I was wondering how this can be applied to remember more contextual information, eg. a multiple choice quiz or the information of a book, etc?

Delighted you found this of interest. Dominic is a memory master par excellence and it was a delight to be working with him. This Sunday, 25 Oct, I intend to post the first of six videos under the title 'Helping your Child Through School. In the first, I will be describing a powerful learning machine you can make from nothing more complicated than a sheet of cardboard and some paper. Although intended for the carers of school-aged children it can be used by learners of all ages and has been shown to greatly enhance powers of retention and recall. I hope you find it useful.

Not an easy language. I once had a Finnish girlfriend and tried to learn their language! A hopeless task but I feel sure you will succeed. Dan posted an interesting video last week on how he used imagery to learn every playing card in the pack! It really works. 車は捨てて 別のを探すわ バスを捕まえる

Memory techniques have got to be better than bloody sudoku, which is pretty stultifying - I should know., the amount of time I've spent on it.. Also Id keep chess playing to a minimum. Connect 4 or better Gomoku are easily enough exercise. Learning stuff you're interested in is the best thing to do - and discuss it with people. The creative play & concentration of these memory palace techniques does look like good mental exercise to me, if for no other reason because they are such fun

I am currently applying this approach to playing chess at the moment and am in the process of looking at a number of different memory tools & techniques and pulling those that will work best (in terms of speed accuracy & recall) so that I can encode a large numbers of games. The better you can analyse the problem (i.e. what you need to know & how you need to be able to recall it) the better you are able to tailor and design a personal system that will work best for you in a particular application.

Hello, I have an interesting question, how do we memorize inside the same palace the branches of the pictures? I mean, until the 7 spot are the same pictures, but at position 7 there are 3 choices (how do we visualize the options?) and afterwards the pictures are totally different acording to the selection. Do we go to spot 8 with 3 pictures? Do we change our spots for each variation? Do we change the palace? Thank you very much!

A very interesting question to which, frankly, I do not know the answer. My lab is presently researching the predictive powers of the cortex and how separate sensory signals are integrated into a whole. Maybe in another 10 months I'll be able to provide an answer.

You can use images to help memorize specific words, but in my experience, constant exposure is the real answer. I was born in France, came to the UK as a child, and learned English almost without realizing it. When I came to learn German aged 13, it was far more of a struggle. Immerse yourself, as far as possible, in the language and you will absorb itt like a sponge. Don't be afraid of making mistakes, they are a vital part of the learning process.
