Thanks William B. I definitely remember Charo being on master joke theater. She pied herself. Then she started laughing hysterically the only way Charo laughs. That she actually pied herself.
In an interview once, Toni Tennille had said that the inspiration for these segments was The Soupy Sales Show when people like Frank Sinatra and Tony Curtis were pied as guest stars after telling a joke. Difference? Self pie and no White Fang or Pookie. Same? The ABC Television Network. Irony? Frankie Avalon was pied on Soupy…Annette was self pied only on a C&T coming attraction.
At first, I thought it was a segment from "The Captain and Tenille Show," which the host named "Alistair Banister" were to hit themselves with a pie at the end of the skit.
She made a big thing about being the First Lady to be hit with a pie. Yeah, because they didn’t use Annette Funicello’s (except in a promo) or Rita Moreno’s contributions to this. Ironically, RM pied herself the same way on The Electric Company a few years earlier.
There were 2 times that a female celebrity played Alistair Banister and pied themselves on this show, but neither was included here: Charo and Annette Funicello.
