The dude that gave Vito the guns/rug was Clemnza the “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.” Man. They did set that dude up, drugged him and killed the girl to gain leverage. When Micheal “forgives” Fredo and they’re embracing when he looks over at Al Neri, that is foreshadowing that Micheal does not forgive Fredo and that he will have Al kill Fredo. The ending was symbolic of Micheal always being alone.

The thing that a lot of people don't know is that Pentangeli was supposed to be Clemenza. The actor that played Clemenza in the first movie refused to play the part after contract negotiations failed. They had to find another actor and made up the character of Pentangeli to replace Clemenza in this movie.

My father came to Canada from southern Italy in the late 60s & went endured a lot. Italians were not considered white people for a long time & were treated with suspicion and general dislike (just like the senator acted towards michael). That being said I was raised a very specific way "old school rules" lol. Non Italians always asked " is your family in the mob". It was the stereotype. So I'd never watch mob movies because it made me so mad. As I got older I have grown to love them. The Godfather movies are a masterpiece and it's always awesome to watch people react to them. Hopefully you watch part 3. A lot of people don't like it and it's not as good as 1&2 but it's still a good movie. :)

The scene between young Vito and Genco's father (the store keeper where Vito worked) always makes me cry, no matter what. He couldn't afford to keep both, and he knew Vito had a family. It killed him and he couldn't even get the words out. It was detrimental to lose your job then, especially when they were scarce. That's why alot of them turned to crime.

Michael was always running from the family and when he became Dom he didn't know how to do it FOR AND WITH THE FAMILY. Vito was all about family, he was a loving man and he would have forgiven Freddo... even Sonny with his temper was all about family. But michael didn't trust anyone (well... Willie Ciccio was based on the very real Joseph Valachi, whose boss was killed by the Genovese and Bonano crime family. And Valachi was arrested trying to protect his boss. The mafia tried to kill him 3 times in prison and Valachi killed all 3 would-be assassins. This was the one very tough guy the mafia could never get to. And Valachi exposed the mafia to the light of day. Charles Bronson played him in a biopic. Fitting.

Fredo the LEGIT most tragic character in the saga. Day One: The gun-down of Vito under Fredo's watch. The lingering notion of his unreliable persona were cemented that day. I only noticed recently during part one when Michael met Moe in Vegas. They spoke AROUND Fredo like he wasn't there. The camera caught his shamed expressions until Michael's first and ONLY warning about "The Family" with the fade-out staying on Michael. Fredo...the LOKI of the Corleone Empire. He said Mama teased him that Gypsies abandoned him. Better than Frost Giants.

Like in the first film, some of the characters are based on real-life mobsters. Roth = Meyer Lansky, and Cheech (mustached guy who snitches to the committee and laughs about "buffers") is based on Joe Valachi. Part II Michael takes on some vague aspects of Carlo Gambino, although Gambino never lived large or spun out into a fratricidal tyrant.

Because Roth let it be publicly known that he and Mike were backing the Rosatto brothers in New York, tho Michael never said that! Irony.... Took many years for me to "get" the power of that final scene when he chose Combat for America and eventually Power Grappling for their Empire. Vito's plan for Michael was the opposite. A further "Expansion" towards Washington. The Avenging Arkangel...flipped the script and set in-motion the downfall of Vito's Empire. In the end, only Connie and Tom survived. Vito and Sonny, Fredo and Mama...gone. Carlo was shady from the intro. He infiltrated THROUGH Connie.

Frank's character was meant to actually be Clemenza - something half-foreshadowed even in the first film. The actor who played Clemenza refused to reprise his role, if the character were to betray Michael, and as such, they had to come up with a whole new character. Personally, I feel as if this weakened the character - as if he comes out of nowhere, "Heeey, Michael, remember me? Old pal!" I bet there will be many disagreements, regarding this - but in my opinion, they had the right idea, and I think it would have been an even stronger film, if Clemenza was kept as a character, instead of introducing Frankie.

Loved it. One note, if I may, if I'm correct you are not using "come-uppance" correctly. If I'm wrong blame it on me being high. 😀

Out of about a dozen Godfather 2 reactions, most of them pretty interesting you were the only one to comment on Hyman Roth's modest life style. Roth is Meyer Lansky, Moe Green is Bugsy Siegel. Johnny Fontaine is Frank Sinatra , the big movie break was From Here To Eternity and won Sinatra an Oscar reviving his career. Sinatra and the Rat Pack made Vegas a mecca for entertainment. Sinatras Rat Pack member Peter Lawford married JFK's sister and introduced him to Chicago Mob Boss Sam Giancana who rigged the Illinois electoral vote winning JFK the presidency. Senate hearing was the Kefauver Committee.

Rumour has is Sam Giancana was the one who ordered the hit on JFK once the FBI found out how close he was to JFK. They got him in office supposedly so they could he influence and help out the mafia, but his brother Robert kept on coming after them and with the governments helps, they whacked JFK on that fateful day in 63. Some say it was the slow death of the mafia given Robert came after them even harder and they began killing each other to silence a lot from the committee's before they were able to kill Robert several years later...

"The French Connection" is another good 1970's Movie. It's a fictionalized adaptation of the 1969 true crime book The French Connection: A True Account of Cops, Narcotics, and International Conspiracy by Robin Moore. Gene Hackman won an Oscar for his role in this Movie.

Great movie thanks again for your awesome reaction and thoughts! I still enjoy the first Godfather more mainly because of Marlon and also I don’t like how he killed Fredo no matter what he did,he’s simple minded and he could have just took care of him knowing that, anyway thanks again!

Yoh, I never noticed this till now, but Kay getting a new hairstyle dying her hair brunette could be a symbol of all the time she'd spent since then making herself what Michael wanted in almost every way including giving him kids preferably boys and thus losing herself and who she is in the process by the beginning of the sequel. It could explain the deep resentment she had for him. I now personally think that her little blow up over Michaels lifestyle and crimes and how it's somehow demonic wasn't about that. A woman who is committed as she was in Godfather 1 would've learnt to accept that due to her dedication. But Michael never really loved her, he only ever loved Appolonia and she never had to fight for his attention and love like Kay did. That's why Kay resented him, because he never really loved her on top of being who he was and all the weight put on her to lose herself and become the person he wanted. Just a thought. Feel free to leave your comments in my section as per what the rest of you Godfather fans also think of it.

Of the 6 men sitting around the table at the end (Michael, Sonny, Tom, Carlo, Tessio, Fredo) half of them will be killed on Michael 's command.

The senator was setup in the hotel with the dead hooker by Micheal. The end wasn't a positive one. Micheal lost, mostly by his own actions, his family. That was a very depressing ending with him sitting on the bench alone. The close family full of love and loyalty turned in to...well, we all saw what it ended up like. If Vito ever saw what happened. Contrast the first movie with the second. It's a stark one

It's always a flashback to family and present Michael as nothing he's all alone despite his best efforts to legitimize his family and to save his family he lost everything his brothers his mother is father his wife his children his second wife. Better I see all the other parts but I see the incredible sad part 2. And three I don't really bag on it because it's kind of his attempt to redeem all the loss and again Michael's curse it all explodes

They couldn't get Marlon Brando in the last scene because the actor had bad experience with Paramount studio and Brando chose not to return.
