This way of conveying release updates and upcoming plans is excellent, clear, and so much better than the randomly "scheduled" updates in the podcast. I would like you to consider making this a regular event - once per quarter you talk about things have been released, upcoming features, why things have been delayed, interesting status, etc. It provides a regular cadence to your customers in the same way internal development teams report to product owners.
@@natepearson5317 I've given it more thought and one of the topics I think would go well for the first few sessions are interesting stats. Eg: Watt/kg per sex is great, but how about gains by plan? What are the typical gains made during the build phase vs base vs specialty? What are typical gains in build if the person SKIPS base vs completing it? What is the most popular workout? Most likely to be skipped or see partial completion? When during the different type of workouts do most people stop (ie: when does mental toughness become a bigger issue?) How much does the average person gain in watts at different starting points (eg: if I'm at 150 FTP, my gains are going to be different after a block than if I'm at 350 ftp). I'm sure there are more that the forums could come up with but as a nerd with no use for the above questions: I find it interesting as hell and I strongly suspect could be related back to new features you're planning.
@@natepearson5317 That would be amazing! The format of non-polished (excel for ex.) is great for me. The content and product design/intention is what I'm here for! Been with y'all for 4 years now, and I couldn't be more optimistic and thrilled with the product and team. Thanks for pressing forward with continuous improvement!
I would like to see STRENGTH TRAINING incorporated into Trainer Road. If you accomplished this you would separate yourself from all other structured training programs. The recent podcast with the strength coach was well received. Please hire him and incorporate his knowledge into your platform. I started lifting 2 years ago with consistency and as a result have become a much much stronger cyclist. Being able to accurate measure total TSS would be very helpful. Thank you for your consideration.
Agree 100%. TR recommends strength training which has impact on TSS but how much is a guess. TR's new red light/green light feature should account for strength training as well as cycling, running and swimming.
hard agree. i'm doing strength training and it would be good if my coach could partner with me. I get all the reasons why this will be hard to do - but you could also just simplify it a bunch - by having people indicate duration, effort and part(s) of the body worked out - (and then maybe also give people a space to indicate how sore they feel on any given day as a way to help in more accurately tracking fitness/freshness) doesn't have to be perfect, but this would be a good place to start
As a 35y/o woman who feels like she missed her best years being only 3 into cycling, it’s extremely encouraging to see that my potential is likely as high as it would be even if I started a decade ago.
I hope you get faster than you ever thought you could. my wife started at your age and damn she is just faster than she ever wished. And to comfort us, semi-mature individuals, our aerobic engines get older just later in life as long as we are constantly on the move. ;)
Laura Van Guilder is one of the best US crit racers of all time. I think she started riding in her late 30s. Of course, there were likely magic medicines involved🙃
@StephanieLuff ha, yeah. She's a badass. Bumped into her on a training ride for the Tour of America's Dairyland and she popped into the shop I was working in for some food on another day.
This is the reason why I’ve been a TR subscriber since 2016! Nate your leadership and product development is absolutely the best and continues to be ahead of its time! Thank you!
As a software developer myself, I can totally relate to this approach, sharing your roadmap with us is a great way to get feedback and create engagement. I really loved it, please keep doing it, proud to be a part of this great community 👏
As a master’s age (69)retired cyclist, I am always trying to find a balance between over training and not training enough. Having a very active lifestyle it is easy for me to overtrain regularly putting in 9-10 hours per week on the trainer always using TR. My TSS is generally between 350-400; I have a power to weight ration of 3.5-3.6 and do not do any events. I simply train to stay fit and love long endurance riding doing between 65-75% of FTP for 90 minutes plus one 3 hour long ride per week in addition to one VO2 Max workout. Can’t wait to see the new features roll out so I can continue to tweak my workouts and get the most out of TR. Keep up the great work!
I'm so stoked on the duration change. I've only got three days available on the bike each week but I'm fortunate enough to have 2 hours each of those days. This will save me from having to manually choose an alternate for each workout. Thanks!
Dang! TrainerRoad is crushing! I’m excited to be part of this community and see where things keep going! I really like the idea of being able to select the number of days to train bc right now I’m right between low and mid volume plans.
Yes, same. I can fairly comfortably do 4 days per week, though I get pretty good compliance with the plan by selecting a low volume plan without endurance rides, & just going out & doing an endurance ride about every week when I can.
Wow! I listened to this as a podcast and was so engaged, I came to watch it all over and leave some good vibes for Nate and the whole dev team. As a product owner in the AI space, I can really appreciate all of the hard work that goes on under the hood and behind the scenes to develop, deploy and maintain a platform like TrainerRoad. Demos like this are super exciting for me from the product perspective. More than that, as a TrainerRoad subscriber, I'm so excited to see features constantly being added that bring me value. I'm particularly looking forward to the refactored calendar app, showing more useful data and providing easier access to features without having to dig around. It sounds like swimming and running are also taking a bit more focus, and as a triathlete, I'll be very happy to see TrainerRoad become more accommodating and useful for multisport athletes. I'm also interested in the Masters plans and project red light green light. As I get older and want to shoot for the 90%+ percentile, I'll need some help adjusting my recovery to be more realistic as I'm not clever enough to do it on my own! Finally, monthly or quarterly updates on the app from the product perspective would be very welcome. Great to see all the work that's going into it! Keep it up
If I could go back and time and change my college major from mech. engineering to software engineering instead..... I'd just LOVE to work on stuff like this at TR! Great work team!!
I’ve been with TR for 3-4 years now and love it. My only complaint was the overall volume of intent was too much for me, so I always manually updated my plans. I’m SOOO excited about the masters plan. Already signed up for on (starts tomorrow) and at a higher volume. So pumped. All of the extra additions are great too.
Really cool. I’m a 60 yo athlete and am glad to see accommodations made. I am also a runner and would love to see my running workouts incorporated into my TSS. I use a Stryd for power on the road-it’s not so accurate on the trail-and heart rate on the trail. In the road, I find that the Stryd average power and average power calculated from HR correlate pretty closely. Also would like to be able to put running races in my calendar. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Overall great improvements, especially the master's option and flexibility with plan builder. Love the logic underpinning the to-be released plan builder. Super useful video. A few things to consider: 1) Add "strength" under "Add Activity" (initially dumb note) 2) Integrate strength training into the plan perhaps start by including an estimate of training load/TSS, but eventually adding to the red-light evaluation and later to the training load detrain-to-not recommended chart shown at 24:30 and eventually to plan builder 3) don't drop PL so quickly when other activities such as running are completed (perhaps the software can ask if the activity was endurance ... VO2 and if it was similar to the last equivalent TR workout) 4) For masters, slightly reduce the increase in progression level following a successful workout BTW: I'm 66 (cycle, run, hike with big elevation gain) with 3.4 W/kg thanks to Trainer Road. I had been modifying my weekly schedule to have one VO2Max workout and another intense workout (SS, Thresh, VO2) plus two or more endurance workouts/week. This was my way to modify the TR plan with insights from Stephen Seiller, Joe Friel, Dylan Johnson, TR podcast, and my Garmin training load / training status. The master's plan is very similar to my modifications but way easier to implement. .
omg, i agree with all of your ideas!! Really good!! Our model for redlight green light will take into account your age, and I bet older athletes will have smaller steps in their progression. But also athletes who have a high watt/kg. IE you will have small steps if you're at 5 watt/kg vs a newer cyclist who is at 2 watt/kg
I was happy to see the new Masters when I updated my plan for the Spring Race season. I was modifying low volume plans by substituting the longer workout and by adding extra days of endurance making a bastardized mid volume plan. The new Masters Plan is doing this for me without my guess work.
I just started the master plan this week. I've never really trained specifically & stayed on a plan other than base. I get bored & group rides come, races, etc. As a master athlete wanting to progress the past few years have been great but this looks like it will be a difference maker. Beyond what you've had recently . I'm excited.
This is such fantastic content! It is a very clear and concise explanation of all these exciting new features. I have gone directly to my calendar and planned my 2024 season using the awesome new mid-volume masters plans. The hours, TSS etc. look spot on for a 71, (soon to be 72), year old cyclo-crosser. Well done Nate and TR team!
Thanks Nate. I really appreciate understanding why you’re making certain updates and how to use new features. These kinds of videos make TrainerRoad even more effective for me.
The comparison of FTP is fascinating. I am a lady of a certain age (46) and have been expecting performance to drop off a cliff as I transition through menopause. It's awful feeling like your body is against you all the time. However, the figures suggest that, in fact, we ladies hold onto our power into our 60s. I can't even tell you how happy this makes me 😊
I'm already there! Just turned 56 and my VO2 Max has gone up! I'm cleaning my hardest MTB climbs better this year thanks to strength training. Don't worry... You can hang onto much of it. 😊
These are awesome features! Stoked. Thanks so much TR team! One particular feature that's encouraging is updating plan builder to make it more intuitive for those who aren't strictly racing, but may be more recreational athletes. My racing days are behind me for now, but I love doing bigger rides faster so I can get home to my family in a timely fashion (and without feeling so physically and mentally drained) while snagging some PRs and maybe even KOMs along the way.
This format of introducing and explaining new updates is awesome. I am are not to tech savvy/interested and will likely miss most of these awesome updates. Being shown in the actual screen in the video really helps me.
Big respect you came up alone without the gang to show us how much work has been put into the software. I like the graphics add ons. The other features are great especially the chance to adapt/ change the whole scenario...one never knows what I will have to do to get my training done, meaning, if the whole Trainerroad is "stiff" and does not allow changes, it would be very frustrating trying to adapt to the training regime. Hands up!
This was the reason i signed up for TR. I do solo multi day bikepacking trips and i just want to be able to allocate a certain number of days per week for cycling / strength training and just need to utilise the time in the most effective manner without over training and drilling myself into the ground. I once used a cycle coach and within a month I started suffering from terrible insomnia. This was simply because the prescribed TSS was too high and my age / job stress were not taken into account.
Super cool Nate. I loved this. For the new plan builder when you are selecting training for fitness.. It would be great to have a cross training option. This year I'm focusing on running but using the bike to cross train 2 or 3 times a week. I suspect many athletes do this. Having this option would be awesome. Thanks again..
When building a training plan I like where you can choose the specific days you can train. One added feature that would be great for me, would be able to add an alternating day(s). My specific example is I can ride 3 days one week and 4 days the next.
I've been taking a break from TR since May, and just got back to training again. Wow.. the changes are super exciting! Can't wait to see you roll out the new features. Now plan buildier is a lot more personalized.
Absolutely loved this "under the hood" approach, Nate. One suggestion, which may already be in the works ... being a 60 yr. old male who has only comparatively recently (~5 yrs.) become serious about cycling and fitness in general, I appreciate any and all data which informs me as to my age-group peers. I thought the distribution graphs you showed were outstanding, but would love to see the same thing graphed by age. Really happy with TR, but ashamed to say I am not as consistent with it as I would like to be. Hoping the coming improvements may help with that! :) Won't publish my FTP here, but will say that even with inconsistent use of TR, plus my weekly unstructured rides with a couple of family members (read that, non-optional), my FTP has improved to the tune of almost %20 since subscribing to TR. And as a side note here, kudos on the AI FTP functionality! I don't think I ever really had a "good" ramp test. Now I feel that my workouts are being more specifically tailored based on ALL my riding. Plus, let's be honest, ramp tests were a drag, haha! And finally, TR customer service is a model I wish every other company would copy. Absolutely outstanding and always a pleasure every time I contact them. Thank you!
We were thinking about showing rankings. IE where do you rank overall in TR, for your gender, and for your age group. Peloton does the same thing. We'd rank you two ways: FTP + Levels and FTP +Levels/weight.
Thanks so much it’s great to see the innovation looking forward to put this into practice. Turned 65 this year so I’ve gone into masters 8 ,through your plan I won our state time trial masters 8,and a state time trial series graded series I found following the plan I was able to complete 99% of the workouts.
A feature I think would be super helpful is to add the option for an auto calibration at the start of each workout. Can't tell you how many times I'm several minutes into a workout and realize I didn't calibrate. Then I second guess the accuracy of my power reading the entire workout. Also, to calibrate now I have to start the calibration, jump on the bike, then get off/on again to start my workout. It would be amazing to have the calibration added to the start of each workoit!!!
It would be really cool if we could potentially add a “pro” bucket into the W/KG charts to see how verified pro numbers compare to the everyday athlete.
Nice to see the upcoming changes. Thanks for sharing the vision! Recommend you consider adding the capability where we could upload the planned gpx race profile or sync up the Strava/Garmin routes when using the plan builder for a race which could end up coaching us how we should approach the planned event.
Looking good what you have planned looks like ti could make a huge difference. I did use Xert ages ago and they had a similar overtraining feature which was useful, but I much prefer your plans. Glad to see something like that would be great.
Love the new plan builder update concepts, the main things (as not a racer) missing from TR for me was the options to build a plan around a general fitness goal or type of riding discipline and because i often add an extra workout during the week to nudge me if i am overdoing it or not. Thank you and looking forward to trying those out.
Many thanks for this special edition of the podcast with these announcements. I must be honest - without you-know-who I stopped following the weekly TR talks. So I'd miss these important updates. 👍👍
Brilliant innovation and the way TR is data driven is the future- A module to be able to upload a GPX file, to get an exact elevation and distance captured. From there develop a personalised plan would be superb.
First time catching the podcast in awhile. The updates sound great, especially picking the climbing profile for your event. One change that really caught me off guard was that mustache.
Anyway you could add a feature for shift workers. I work an 8 day rotation. So my week is 8 days not 7. Love this content, keep it coming. I’m new to trainer road. Just got outfitted with power meters on all my bikes so I thought TR was a great option.
LOVE this idea! I'd be happy to input reps and sets but could even just be intensity and time and type of strength training? Possible integration opportunity with Dialed Health? 😏
@@natepearson5317Maybe sync with Garmin strength data? At least the amount of time training. I do 2 longish sessions (90 mins) twice a week for more days on the bike. Others do 30 mins 3x. Often can't do VO2 Max the next day.
make it a -loosers- masters plan. on the other hand, an ML-based overtraining detection would be nice, as well as alteration of a plan based on incorporation of unstructured ride data.
Thanks Nate, changes are awesome. One thing is about calendar - I’d like to be able to insert an empty week in order to fill it with whatever I want queue changing the plan.
Great Stuff! My comment is also related to weight/strength training. Would be great to be able to incorporate this as well. Leg day always disrupts my plan and I just wonder if there is a way to incorporate that into my overall load through trainer road.
@@natepearson5317 hi, thank your for the reply, however Personal Records are not the same as your Top X results, as I understand it and from what I see. What TR shows is Personal Records. So….if in 2022 I did a Personal Record of 250 for 20, that would show up, if then I did 270 for 20 in 2023 again that would show up….but my issue then is….if in 2024 I did 260 for 20, this would not show up as it’s not a Personal Record. I think getting PR’s as mature cyclists is not so common so seeing your Top Scores, not your Personal Record would be a better measure. In short, if I did 1 Watt under my Personal Record it wouldn’t show anywhere in the list as it is today.
These announcements are really helpful for knowing what’s coming and how to use them, excited for the new features! Could we see FTP as compared to the group (as well Watt/Kg?
@@natepearson5317 Even a chart like your doing for for Watts/Kg except another chart for FTP as minimal viable product. Ranking sounds cool to but it would be nice to see where you sit, rank 1,000 out of 30,000 active participants.
Thanks for the update. As part of these updates, it would really be great if you could add in a way to do a Saturday group ride. Currently, I make Saturday an endurance day or an unscheduled day but plan builder looks at that and compensates on Sunday with an interval day. I get that group rides don't improve the training levels but they tend to be hard 2-3 hours nonetheless. Doing anything more intense than sweet spot rides on Sunday can be a challenge. Thanks.
I love this video so much! So interesting and awesome to get an inside look into the future! Great work team! Nate, you're awesome but the mustache is making you look like you have more life experience than you should have! (old 😜)
This is brilliant Nate.. great to see and hear you talk through these updates please keep this is guys it makes the new features easy to understand and even why the changes have been done. Look forward to where TrainerRoad can take into acccount other workouts from group rides, spotives etc.. Well done guys.. Pete 🚴🏻😃👍🚴🏻🚴🏻🥇
Oh, we just talked about this. We want to make it so you can substitute a TR workout for a group ride. You wouldn't get levels right now, but red light green light could adjust your next week if you did too much on a sat group ride.
Wow all these new updates are super rad! This is one of the reasons why I love TR so much. You guys are always pushing out awesome new features and constantly getting better. I was wondering if there are any plans to incorporate training plans for ultra races? I'm thinking about potentially doing another Ultraman and would love to follow a TR plan for that this time around. Thanks!
Big fan of the new “masters plan”. I’ve been doing my own version of this using trainer road for the past two years. I’m curious why you market this at masters? Most coaches these days and seiler recommend only 2 intensity days a week. Also I would recommend making your Friday sessions on the high volume plan at recovery pace not endurance z2 pace.
For the new plan buildercan you please have an 8 day rotation instead of the standard week? I’m a shift worker and that would make setting up a plan a lot easier.
dude...that mustache... dude... but seriously I LOVE TR and these updates are great. I'll pay for TR even if I'm not always actively using it because I love what you guys do.
Great update. Love the feature of how many hours per day I'm available. Will the red light / green light feature incorporate other activities such as running. Also, as someone who still uses another platform for his running/swimming plan, and uses Trainerroad for the bike coaching, could you add a feature so I can do the triathlon cycling plans but not show the running/swimming workouts.
yes, we'll take into account running and other activites. It might start with just cycling but I was in a meeting today where the other activites were being put in our data warehouse.
This is excellent - if you are interested in connecting with an internal medicine, critical care, neuro/stroke doctor driven by cycling and improving longevity please get in touch
It would help my motivation to see my previous stats/progress graphed during my current workout. It would be like competing with yourself in a way. Specially on ramp test! Is there a way to show that feature?
Most of the people I know base there levels on distance. Their yearly/annual goals/targets are base on volume/distance. Maybe in the build section of the menu you should (somehow) add a volume section to their training plan as when I used TR for a gravel race I constantly found myself adding/changing training sessions to make up volume because the suggested volume in the plan didn't meet my yearly/monthly cycling goals. If you can add this at the start of the plan it might encourage rides more to stick to the plan also. Hope this feedback helps.
Ditto this. TR plans do not add in the long rides required for long events. A maximum time of two hour sweet spot training does not translate to a 5 hour race. Because of this, I have never been able to use TR plans. I just use TR for their workouts as I need them because they are perfectly crafted to whatever zone or system you are targeting. Hopefully, this gets sorted in the upcoming release so that I we can use TR as intended and get the most benefit from it.
Thank you TR Team. These updates and features are pretty sick! As a night shift RN I have been struggling with recovery based on my inconsistent sleep schedule. I’m in my early 40’s. Hopefully this doesn’t come across as a silly, but does this mean for those who choose Master’s plan that we need to readjust our expectations of growing our FTP? Meaning that FTP gains will be lower and slower than if we were stick to non-masters plans? Thanks again. Looking forward to the coming changes.
