Dan sometimes it seems that you enjoy every figure you get to review, but I appreciate your objective criticism of this figure while still retaining what you did like about it. Great review and solid critique
Great review! Thank you! As well-sculpted and heavy on the new parts as this figure was, I still wish they'd've just gone that little bit further and made a hollow torso for re-use on later figures. Now I've got to figure out how to swap parts around to see if I can get a Buzz-Saw Hordak torso in there, somewhere . . . .
One thing that I REALLY like about your videos, Dan, is that you're always honest. It's so rare to see that these days. And I totally agree with you about all of the gripes about this new figure. I had the vintage figure when I was a kid and while I do really love the sculpt on this new Rio Blast figure, there are some things that are left to be desired. I think this is one of those figures that can still be bought, however, and again, I appreciate your honesty, Dan. Keep up the excellent work!
just a personal thought of how to fix the problem with the peg on the action feature in the chest, if you don't mind a little after market modification. punch a hole just big enough for the peg on the under side of the armor, so when you close the flap, it pegs right into the armor, that'll get it to close as flush as you like it. again it's after market modding, but it still works. just might have to touch up the silver paint around the hole so you don't just see it warn away when you punch the hold in the armor. hope this helps you
Im so happy for this figure! I always liked the cyborg Cowboy look. It fits in with the MOTUC world. He needs a cowboy hat now. Where can I find one....
I guess anyone who says his reviews aren't balanced needs to be referred to this one. I look forward to the figure, but I appreciate the honesty in this review.
Rio Blast was always my favorite heroic warrior figure as a kid. I so wanted him to make an appearence in the cartoon series but alas it never happened. This figure looks amazing, another great job by the 4 Horesmen!
The chest flap has bugged me for a while now, seems like it could have been an easy fix if they had just sculpted an indentation on the chest for it to fit more snug against. The visor not lining up seems dumb too. Still a nice figure though.
Great and honest review, Dan. I really don't get why they messed up the flap on his chest. Would it have been that hard to include a little hole in the armour piece so that it closed properly? I may take a drill to it and see if I can make it work. If you paint part of the torso silver underneath where it shows, it could look pretty good. I'm not as bothered about his visor not lining up but it's a ridiculous mistake for them to make.
I think the figure came out great. In regards to the visor piece. If you lift rio s head and crunch his abs down the visor will cover his eyes completely . The chest piece could have been better executed agreed but rio blast usually always has his chest blaster exposed any way. So no grips from me there . All in all my favorite he man character as a kid and I'm happy with him . Thanks Dan for all you do for the MOTUC brand .
I'm not sure the chest piece could have been done all that better on this particular line. The obvious solution would be to have a recessed hole for the plug piece, but the armor isn't thick enough for that and all the figures had to use the basic buck. It's a shortcoming of construction.
Dan, do you ever do any customizing? If so, then maybe you could drill a hole into the armor for peg on the flap to go into. That might allow the flap to close completely. Just a suggestion.
Well, when I get him I'm sure going to customize some of the parts. I'll make a hole on the chest to make sure that flap closes. Then engineer something to make the visor move closer to his eyes...
I'm jealous, cause Rio was one from the vintage line I wanted BADLY. lol I love the look of the new version, with his hair & mustache. I have to admit I always wondered why the MOTU line had a sheriff?!? I thought Rio would fit more in line w/ Bravestarr's line and wondered if Rio was on the table for Bravestarr when it was canceled and Mattell said well he looks good and we might be able to salvage something out of Bravestarr. Any thoughts Dan or anyone?
mmmm....I feel like they try so hard to keep the cost down on this guy they run out of time to improve the action features... They could have easily solved that chest piece problem by having a hole on the silver circuitry for the peg on the flap for the chest gun, keeping the flap tightly onto the chest armor. Circuit design could hide the hole. And since they went the trouble of sculpting a brand new forearm piece, they should have recreated the spinning gun fast draw gimmick, having the gun on a peg and be able to fold back in in its holstered state. They just got lazy with that visor... Could have been one of the best MOTU figure.
why not just make a hole for the peg on his flap in his armor? and then paint it to look like a black void of some kind where the gun is stored? .... as it is now, the flap doesnt close and when it's open, there is no conceivable place the chest gun was stored to begin with ....
I completely disagree. I actually really like how they incorporated the accessories. The flap on his chest does not bother me in the slightest because the vintage figure really creeped me out when I was a boy. I would imagine that they cut his heart out to put a gun and that grossed me out.
Oh, Rio Blast. I remember one of my friends owning one and me being so jealous of him! Little disappointed with this. I was very excited about finally getting a MOTUC Rio Blast but it has so many small issues. Making the weapons separate pieces is just lazy design! They should have at least made the chest piece internal. Also that visor would have been so easy to make properly, but Matty had zero effort. I hate that the weapons are just unpainted plastic. I don´t mind the head sculpt and paint-job on the body itself looks good, but there´s so much wrong with it. I should just get the vintage one instead!
...Liked the video, but not much the new figure :/ . When me and my brother played as children, we own the vintage figure, as it extracted the weapons in fight with foes from many "figure universes" we made it yell:" Here's come the appetizers(for the legs guns), the fishes(for the arms ones) and the roast chicken(for the chest cannon)...now, pay the bill you filthy b4$74r%!!(so, finally we estracted the backpack blasters and make him overwhelm all the bad guys)"...Old good time that never come back again. Coll review: LIKES!! :)
Pretty close to being perfect? You count more flaws on this one then on any figure you have presented... and it is close to being perfect? Come on. I mean, it is beautiful looking... for a statue -- but they botched the "gun job". Funny thing is, compare this figure to Double Trouble. That figure should NOT have had an action feature as the thing ruined it. They should simply have made two heads instead and given us, oh I dunno a Horde emblem to put on her chest when she was a horde member... and maybe a horde armband? Meanwhile Rio Blast NEEDS the action features. Those guns, where do they appear from? Where are the hole in his legs from where the guns should appear? How can store a canon in his chest when there is no hole? They didn't even bother trying to hide this using a paint job that would have given the illusion of a hole in the chest. The problem with Matty when they do this kind of thing isn't just that they are cheap -- it is that they are dumb beyond belief. Figures that would have been waaay better without the action feature or the "nod" are ruined because Matty believes that fans would rather have the "nostalgia" than a figure that actually looks good. And then they do the opposite with figures like Rio Blast where the "nod/nostalgia" was actually important and needed.
Wow man. Biggest disappointment of the entire line for me! Rio Blast is for me what Mosquitor is to you!!! Can't believe they blew the articulation and THE VISOR!!!! IT FOESNT EVEN COVER HIS FREAGIN EYES??? Geez. Horsemen putting work into their own lines now and totally cutting corners on a Mattel as Motuc draws to a close. So much for finishing strong.
