Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts, or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
In this episode, we take a look at 1987's adaptation of the popular toy line, Masters of the Universe. Starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as his arch nemesis, Skeletor, the movie is ripe with cheesy 80s sci-fi and unintentional comedy, shoddy costumes and all manner of odd choices and strange decisions that led to an outrageously strange film that's remembered for all the wrong reasons. Let's find out WTF Happened to Masters of the Universe!

Langella's Skeletor monologue towards the end is STILL the greatest villain monologue in any movie. It's the closest we ever got to how villains acted and spoke in comic books back in the day, and did what it was meant to do: leave the audience breathless and worried that the hero wouldn't be able to defeat the villain.

He-man and the MOTU is my favourite IP of all time and while this movie wasn’t what it should’ve or could’ve been, it’s actually not a bad movie. Dolph was perfect as He-man and Frank Langella KILLS it as Skeletor. I met Dolph in 2015 at a con and he was an absolute gentleman. He was every bit the He-man I’d hoped he’d be for 28 years. I told him everything I ever wanted to say without fanboying out on him. He was genuine and polite. They say don’t meet your heroes in case you’re disappointed, but they weren’t talking about Dolph Lundgren.

Langella’s Skeletor is insanely awesome, I’d happily watch an entire spinoff just about him. His obsession with getting He-Man to kneel before him was hilarious. Maybe a team up with General Zod would work? I remember being a bit disappointed with the film back in the day as it was missing Battlecat, Orko, the Prince Adam transformation, etc. But over time I’ve come to really like it and even going to Earth doesn’t feel like a cheap cop-out. Also, Bill Conti’s score is fantastic! It’s the sort of iconic score that Hollywood seems adamant to ignore these days.

Trivia: The after credits scene wasn't in the script and was Gary Goddard's idea. Gary Goddard had BOSS Studios to prepare a vat of pink liquid. Gary Goddard talked to Frank Langella and told him what he wanted him to do and that he was to get in the pink liquid wearing the skull mask and he was to surface and say "I'll be back!". Frank Langella agreed to do it and they shot it and it was done in 1 take.

I find it funny 17 million dollars was considered high budget in the 1980's. Also, Dolph Lundgre';s worse role was a cameo in a British "comedy" movie called "The Fat Slags", a movie so bad it makes Johnny Mnemonic seem a classic of cinema.

Gwildor wasn't an original character created for the film, he originated in a MOTU mini-comic from 1983. None of the characters were created for the film, they had all appeared in previous media. Not trying to call you out, I was surprised as anyone but I found this out from a book gifted to me called He-Man and the MOTU: Character Guide and World Compendium. It covers every character, world, toy, movie, comic ever associated with the brand including She-Ra. It's a beautiful hard covered book, 700 pages long and mind blowing with details. Highly recommended for fans of the IP. As far as the movie goes, I was it in theaters and was devastated because it was so different from the cartoon. But 30 years later, it's okay. I can see why it has a cult following.
@TNHFPRODUCTIONS987
@TNHFPRODUCTIONS987 4 года назад
At least the villains had good names they did not have the same last name like Blade Man or Hook Man or Lizard Man. In my opinion all the other villains and characters were killed off screen and the movie served as a sequel and conclusion of the cartoon series and by the way I’m glad Skeletor was made to be dark and sinister and not goofy and cheesy like he was on the cartoon series.

@MrHootiedean 4 года назад
@@HardestTargett I think the book is right. Mattel helped publish it. But I agree Gwildor wasn't in any of the mini comics that came with the toys. The book has a picture and it looks like it might be from an actual MOTU comic or some overseas comic. Gwildor, Blade and even Saurod look ripped from the comics to the screen. Check out the sample on Amazon, it will blow your mind with its details!

I was (and still am) a huge He-Man fan. I was 7 or 8 when I saw this movie at the theater and I was REALLY PISSED. I'm not a studio executive but who on Earth could think that release a movie that has nothing to do with the cartoon craziness that it was based on? It's actually based on the original story of He-Man, a barbarian. But since almost no one knew that at that time (let alone kids) we all went to see a story that had to do with the show we watched. And this was a total disaster. Whether you like the movie itself or not, it was like having a totally different story and characters but with the same name.

Thor is at least,doable,in live-action,Masters Of The Universe,as much as people like to compare it to Thor is just an entirely different thing altogether. It took me a while to reach the conclusion that He-Man's unfilmable but the more I thought about it,I realized that it is. Others might disagree with me on that opinion and that's fine because it it is after all,only my opinion but I think doing Masters Of The Universe in live-action properly-even with all of the advancements made in technology and visual effects,would be really,really hard to do.

I really hated the movie, but that was definitly not Dolph Lundgren's fault. The reason why I hated it was because so few of the original TV series made it into the movie. I didn't want to see a movie happening on earth with lots of unknown characters and some from the series that barely resembled the originals. I also hated that they were going for so much laser tag. He-Man never used guns in the series so seeing him using guns here seemed to be way out of character. And last I hated the looks of most characters. The masks and costumes looked very cheap and were way too obvious being artificial which took me out of the movie even back then as a kid.

It was a horrible hot mess, by the time the movie came out the cartoon had already dropped in popularity. I just turned 10 when this released and was severely let down.

I was one of the rare kids in the '80s who didn't get into the MotU cartoon, so I enjoyed the movie as its own self-contained experience. I still love that Skeletor did one of the original post-credits scenes before it became standard in big franchise movies like this.

If they made this movie a few years earlier when the cartoon and toys were still popular, it would’ve been a hit with kids. By the time it came out kids had moved onto gi joe and transformers...and only adults wound up watching it and nit picked it to death.

In the UK it hit cinemas in Dec 87. so a lot of kids wouldn't have got to see till the video release in Summer 88. By then no one was into He-Man.

I don't know. I kind of liked the movie. Even then, as a kid, I understood that movies being what they were they couldn't do an actual adaption. I kind of saw it coming and enjoyed it for what it was.

@Bobo Boy Well back then effects were crude and expensive. Most of the major characters had some gimmick about them that would have made it difficult to do with the money and technology of the time. Today, they could easily do it but back then no so easy. It's ironic that we finally have the capability but no one can seem to agree on what to do or get a production off the ground.

Dudes, I saw this classic in the theater! I clearly remember not wanting to see this movie at the time. My best friend and I were 12 and totally over the Heman days! It was the end of summer and we were bored so we said what the hell let’s go see it! Within the first scene we were laughing are asses off! 20 minutes into the movie, the cheap film 🎞 print starts having problems. Glitches here and there that result in the film locking up 30 minutes in. After about 5 minutes the movie starts creeping back up to speed and then total meltdown! The print literally melted on the screen! 🔥 We’ve all seen this before but to watch a print melt on the big screen is the coolest effect ever!!!

No Battle Cat, No Prince Adam, No King or Queen, No Orko, No supporting cast of heroes, other than Teela and an even more useless man at arms. Bargain basement storm troopers, cheesy effects, 80's Earth Humans (totally out of place), and Dolph Lundgren LOOKED the part, but sounded like he was snorting Coke in his trailer between scenes. If it were done today, with good writing a great cast of actors, a big budget,.AND stay true to the Chracters and oroginal storyline,, they could make a fantastic He-Man Movie.
