Woah! You touched on Remission having a fire theme and obviously Leviathan representing water, which lead me to realize that their follow up has "mountain" in the title (earth) and then of course Crack The Skye being air. Very, very cool. Mind blown.

crack the skye is supposedly aether which makes a lot of sense for the astral projection stuff. I'm not sure where the air album is yet

I remember seeing a vid of Brann (i think) talking about the elephant man themed songs. Basically they were fascinated by blurring of the line between man and beast. Kind of like their music. It can on the surface seem very harsh but there is a lot of heart and depth to their lyrics and message. I love Mastodon because of this. Their music can be very technical and intense but there always seems be a positive message. I love the themes of overcoming adversity.

I see Naked Burn as more of a backstory to the whale. The lyrics reference the book of enoc and follow how the nephillim were formed and how they died. I think in the context of this story Ahab see the whale as another beast that either wasnt killed along with the nephillim or was created to kill the nephillim.
@JJMetalhead
@JJMetalhead Год назад
Oh, no way! I missed the book of enoch references but that makes sense and makes the story even more badass.

Well done. This is exactly how I would break down the concept. The Norse belief in Thor and the serpent was used to describe high seas and storms. The hammer of Thor created the lightning, etc

I always just felt Joseph Merrick was just to tie together their first album Remission with Leviathan. Remission's outro track Is actually called Elephant Man. Also Elephant Man and Joseph Merrick are a couple of their most beautiful tracks from their respective albums.

Awesome! I was wondering when you were going to cover this album from one of my favorite bands. Now you need a Mastodon playlist to put the videos into. Have you thought about making videos for songs that are not part of the concept albums, just to give your interpretation of the song? Maybe something worth considering. I'm referring to any artist, not just Mastodon. Thank you for these videos. I listen to so much music day to day, that I stopped paying attention to lyrics nearly two decades ago, for the most part, so these videos help draw my attention back to the lyrics on some of my favorite albums, and help me get a better sense of the story as a whole. Thanks again, Jay! P.S. apart from Avantasia, you should check out some of the albums from The Ocean; Pelagial would be a good place to start. Since you like Mastodon, I'm pretty sure you're going to like this band.
@JJMetalhead

Thank you! I probably should put these videos into a playlist. Do you have any recommendations for specific song explanations? I’ll check out The Ocean!
@GrimAhren
@GrimAhren Год назад
@@JJMetalhead right off the top of my head I can't think of one specific song, but it could be anything. Let's say one song from Mastodon or coheed that's from an album that is a non-concept, maybe a song that is ambiguous and left for interpretation, you can tell us how you personally interpret it. I think that people will like watching your videos even if they have their own interpretations to begin with. Oh, I think some candidate songs might be "Deathaura", "Juliet", and "No dream can heal a broken heart" from the band Nonata Arctica. These songs are all from the same album, but the album is not a concept album. Even though they don't do concept albums, their songs tend to have stories to them, some even link with each other. A personal favorite of mine is "White pearl, Black oceans", aside from the aforementioned songs. Going to post a second comment after this one.
@GrimAhren
@GrimAhren Год назад
@@JJMetalhead I think you're really going to enjoy Pelagial from The Ocean. The band's first albums featured different vocalist but after a certain album on worst they stuck with one specific singer. The album I recommended was initially conceived as an instrumental only album, because the permanent singer had problems with his vocal cords, but just before the album was fully recorded he was able to record vocals for it, so now the album has two parts, one song and one instrumental. The album's concept is about the different layers of the ocean, from the surface level down to the deepest at the ocean floor. The music reflects the different layers, and the lyrics deal with mental and emotional stability and self-reflection. This album actually came out with a sort of movie that takes you on the journey from the first track all the way to the last, and all the videos is just a person submerged in water, if I remember it correctly. You can find this video on RU-vid. Just look for the ocean pelagial full video or full movie. Have fun!

So I got alot to say about this, fist off great job on all the research and explaining your interpretation of the story.I read the Moby dick book in 5th grade for Book it and was pretty bored with it to be honest untill Captain Ahab showed up and the description of him really intrested me. And then with all the crazy explanation of his experience with this huge sea monster and how it took is leg and sent him in to this Monomania "great word selection btw" really drew me into the story. I am really into monster movies so the idea of having a gozilla like monster being chased by on man with a chip on his sholder was exciting. When this album came out I really tried to get the references to the book, but I had a hard time cause of a coupple of songs i thought didn't fit in and having watched this video, Now i know why lol. I think its awesome that an old story like this can still inspire somthing this awesome in this erra kinda like how the Thor story was an inspiration for Moby Dick it's self. Great video Sry for the grammatical errors . Hard to text a long response.
