I have been watching this for the past few years. I am undergoing Chemotherapy and when I get down, this seems to give me the drive to keep going. Wonderful, emotive, powerful and graceful all in one. from an old Aussie/ Dane.
It’s not a dance. This type of haka is a Peruperu haka and is explicitly a war haka. They are literally explaining how they are coming to kill you and eat you up.
There is an account from soldiers of the Scots Guard fighting in the North African campaign of ww2 where they witnessed some of Rommels divisions high tailing it in Tunisia upon hearing members of the 28th Maori Battalion performing haka alongside 2 highland pipers. The Germans didn’t want any part of it
The peruperu jumps at the end were mean!!! Very impressive!!! But would have been even better if they all landed on their knees from the same height they were jumping.
Kia ora.
i reckon that was mean but from doin peruperu from that height straight to the knees.thatz a bg ask they could easily damage their knees and do the crucia ligaments doin that putting them out for a good 3months.i think just leave that to howard morrison junior when he did it in 98.i say leave it there.
@nui9unit I would like to see any kapa in Te Tairawhiti keep up with Te Matarae i o Rehu, Matarae i o Rehu epitomise fitness. And with a bracket like Matarae i o Rehu and coming near the end of it, they can be forgiven for their timing, where many kapa haka will be blowing their kumu after Matarae's whakaeke. No offence.
