The Match of the Day episode broadcast on this day in 1982, featuring highlights of Oldham v Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich v Arsenal and the goals from St Mirren v Celtic.
Can't see any grass! At least it wasn't boggy & the ball played fine enough. Oldham manager Jimmy Frizzell & Notts County's Jimmy Sirrel, I always got them mixed up. They both stayed with their clubs as player & manager for many years & the Boardroom good or bad seasons didn't sack them either, a rare thing.
Pitches now are sterile. Look at any player in the winter during the 'footy' years. Mud. Yes mud splattered everywhere. Now the poor dears with their skintight kit are just playing in a video game. Thats what it looks like. Pitches gave the game character. Some pitches like Baseball Ground in deep winter you could count the blades of grass on it! , but you got cracking games with great skill. Snow, deep frost, played on that too. I dont watch it now. 20th Century was the best. Thank god for RU-vid & yesteryear footy!
47:39 the arsenal fans cheering because news coming through of a Liverpool goal at Wembley in the League Cup Final against Spurs. Arsenal did Liverpool a favour that day by beating title rivals Ipswich, while Liverpool returned it by beating North London rivals, Spurs.
51:45 What a topsy-turvy league table! While Southampton were top having played 31 games, Spurs had only played 24. I must admit I don't remember Arsenal challenging for the title that season.
Swansea were! Or is it upside down. The pitch, grass & mud or mud with grass. Pitches gave another side these days & you'd get great skill & games. Now utterly perfect right from thru the season & its boring. Dont watch it now appart here, thanks all for vids.
