It's not just the pace of the game that was better, it's the pace of the highlights. It's hard to quite pin down why I prefer this style but it feels more like you're watching the game. Modern highlights just show the top chances in a match and it often feels less representative of the pattern of play on the day.
Because there were more highlights then. Everybody took shots back then and half of them were dumb shots that didn't go anywhere but they still made it into the highlights. Today, teams are more deliberate about chance creation. That means they only shoot when relatively certain. So less shots means less highlights and when you do get a chance, it tends to be high quality.
@@brianduru3753 I feel like there's truth in what you're saying even if it isn't 100% accurate. I don't know that it's about "dumb shots" but I agree that attacks are more deliberate and there is certainly a far greater emphasis on ball retention in the modern game. Here you can start the highlight with either team and it not be clear who will be the one shooting because of the end-to-end (and long ball) nature of the game.
@@caeglas1 Maybe you could elaborate as to why you think that is? I doubt you could though. That would require actual thinking and intelligence, two qualities you no doubt lack.
@@kjaamor2057 It's the trend though. This isn't even a new thing. Just check the highlights from a match from the 90s or 80s. The right back shooting from 30 yards and I'm thinking to myself 'is he stupid or something?' But that's just how it was back then. And in a way it was advantageous for them because goalkeeping technique was poorer back then and the pitches were worse so you could get the odd bobble or bounce. Today, teams don't shoot from range that much because in addition to it being inefficient, goalkeepers are just so much better and secure in their handling and the equipment is better (gloves and all). The midfield is also more packed these days as teams are more organised. The tactical discipline is much better and so the flair players are being squeezed out. All this amounts to a more structured and organised game and less frenetic end to end action like we used to see in the past.
Randomly on my YT suggestions, fittingly from the day of my 18th birthday so decided to check it out Insane how much top flight football has developed since this action. Watching them hoof the ball forward rather than the coordinated runs, team presses, possession based football, etc. Actually fun to watch with no memory of scores 👌
Fascinating to watch this today. So many random collisions between players where play simply.... continues! A good example the Andy Cole chance at 20:58, where he and theDons keeper, Sullivan, have a light collision. The ball is cleared and the game goes on. Today in 2023, a goalkeeper in that situation would nearly always pretend to be injured and get the game stopped. Possibly the striker too. And there'd be a minute where nothing at all happened except people walking about, medical staff on, players moaning to the referee, etc. I watch quite a bit of older football (15+ years ago) on RU-vid and it's really noticeable how the game back then flowed.
Ducking hell I was at that game for Newcastle with my dad and two brothers was only my 2nd ever game was a rare treat when the parents could afford it 😀😀😀😀
I'm a Man United fan but I am glad to see Newcastle playing well again. When we had the Carabao final, it said on the news, Newcastle has a population of 800,000 people and 100,000 fans went to London - that is insane support for your club! That means 1 in 8 people from Newcastle were either at the game or there in London supporting their team. I'd rather it was them that were good and getting in the top 4 than teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Man City, Arsenal etc.
@@yute-hube779 there are many people who support people who dont actually live in newcastle. for example surrounding areas moved away fans who grew up when they were a top team children of fans as above fans of shearer etc
I was 12 turning 13 in march. It's weird, I didn't remember Bosnich playing for utd until a bit later than this and I definitely didn't remember Gary presenting Motd this early! Happy, simpler times 😂
When this MOTD was broadcasted, just before my 6th birthday(March 1994). Now i'm in the 3 Series(ie 30 years old 😊). And a lot of my family members died already before me. Plus football is more enjoyabale to watch without the VAR era.
I remember this weekend, I went to the West Ham v Everton game, and we had a good home record, but in true West Ham fashion it didn’t matter as we lost 4-0 at home in a drubbing that included and Nick Barmby hat trick.
They say it takes Coles 6/7 chances to score but his elite movement created several opportunities for his team to find him. Perfect for Utd's dynamic football at that time.
People mock the quality compared to today, but the pace of the game was far better back in the 90s/early 00s. Players didn't just hoof it, despite what some claim. There was some lovely neat football back then. Possession football and pressing is all well and good, but everything's been slowed down. As for the endless stoppages and time wasting, the ridiculous money involved, and the VAR nightmare, it's awful to imagine where our game will be in the next five to ten years.
The overall quality of the players is miles worse for sure but god the pace of the game is absolutely beautiful never even a second of tactical time wasting I love it. Even with refs adding on a lot more time for time wasting in 23 season it still hasn't lowered it at all this type of football is so much more satisfying to watch.
Disagree here. Game is more physical with far less protection for players so time on the ball is different. Yes it's more technical today perhaps but that's because contact has changed. Although the English game here is still clearly behind Europe and South America.
@@volkte37 Alright champ. If you think someone diving to the ground every 12 seconds trying to bait fake fouls is physical you must be one of those helmet wearing people.
Hello, I am writing from Spain. I would like to get in touch with you I am a soccer collector for more than 30 years I would be interested in these programs of some seasons that I am missing we could talk to buy them Thank you
Aesthetically and technologically the early 2000s were a weird time I find. The world was still moving from the analogue age into the fully integrated digital era we now live in two decades later. One thing that hasn’t changed however is the pundits focusing on the referees and rules of the game!
So weird to see just how big & full of stars that Arsenal team were. Bergkamp, Adams, Vieira, Petit, Seaman, Kanu etc all way over 6ft. So unlike the tiny Arsenal team of today.
@@yute-hube779 He was a great player and possessed immense skill, but he was not the best player in the league's history. I could name a dozen players who influenced games more at a higher level over a consistent period than Bergkamp.
@@maxwellboyne2770 any time soon? Absolutely wishful, but i do think there's more than half a chance towards the end of his career, he'll come do a season. Then again, i said the same for Milner.
Debate over consistency in the rules, eh? I'm stuck in a time warp! It's staggering to think that little has changed in 23 years as far as officiating goes.
The state of the pitch 😂the good old days when you could actually tackle footballers are to soft these days as a Newcastle fan we took half of Leeds players we got David batty ,Gary speed, lee bowyer,Alan smith ,mark viduka,James Milner😂
@@seltaeb9691 I agree. Dangerous tackles in the old days were never good but it’s gone too far the other way now. Like you say with no aggression at all & the play acting where they just look like tw&ts when they do it.
Thanks to the mirror and Gary I have put match of the day as my ring tone I know that will annoy right wing people and tories everytime my phone rings it will troll right wing people and the tories like the theme tune trolled number 10 yesterday in the mirror youtube page
Someone's bitter. Beckham overrated? What an absolute crock of shite that is. Beckham's ability to hit passes and crosses was beyond just about anyone in the PL at the time, and that's without his goals. United are rarely on MOTD first nowadays, so I don't know what you're watching.
Look at football now or fake football. Zero tackling, a great sliding tackle will get you booked or the red card. The ball is awful & a carpet of a pitch that never wears or varies. And the money they earn is criminal.
8:48 disgraceful refereeing and commentating. Obvious penalty. 10:15 bent ref giving a goal kick when it's obviously a corner. According to Man United haters, the team had the refs on their side back then! The ref shat on us in this game.
We are now treated to the cacophony of high-pitched, shrieking, female commentators, sharing the debased, linguistic form and cliche-ridden utterances of the juice less lemons before them. MOTD is like a nursery group play scheme. They speak like nobody knows or understands anything about life or football. More condescension than footy - like the club song said: bring us back.. 🤣🤐🧘🏽♂️
