The Astra/Kadett entered the Matchbox range as a roadgoing version in red in 1986. It didn't take long for rally liveries to appear, and this one joined the lineup in 1989. It is based on John Welch's rallycross monster which was in fact not a GTE/GSi, but a special prototype called the 4S, designed for Group B rallying. The 4S was killed off at the same time Group B met its demise, so Welch purchased one of the four prototypes to use in the European Rallycross Championship. Now I won't be restoring the car to original. Instead, I'm going down the route of another iconic Astra-based racer. John Cleland's 1989 British Touring Car Championship winning Vauxhall in fact. I tell the story of the Astra/Kadett, Welch's machine, Cleland's victor, and Cleland's career in a jam-packed video!
