This week is a custom build-off using a more modern Matchbox model. The task in hand is to create a 'shop truck', as thought up by Deep Junk Garage. There are a huge number of creators and channels taking part, so an extensive list of channel links are posted below and in the comments.
I use this dilapidated old Holden-based Ruff Trek and give it a muscular makeover, testing out a couple of new techniques in the process. It gets a fairly sizeable overhaul, and as I say in the video, I try to emphasise some of the details as the castings of this age lose a bit of the detail that the earlier 1-75 castings had.
Hopefully this series will track my progress and aid me becoming a better modeller. There are plenty more videos to come and I have a big selection to choose from for future restorations. Please like and subscribe to be informed of new content first.

Great job mate. I had a wee Starlet that color. Was an awesome car, had all the suspension lowered down to the rubbers, also the fan removed and an electric one which give those little motors noticeably more power. It was like a gocart, no body roll at all ! Total death trap !

Hi Jason. I've recently tried making my own decals and had the same issues. However, I found a great tip online which works a treat. Once you've created your design invert the image then offer the transfer to the model face down. The decal adheres to the model and the backing slides off without any issues. Great job on this model as always.

To have more control of how much paint goes on and where it goes on you might want to try painting with an extremely fine needle if you want more intricate detailing.

Brilliant job on the ute Jason, I like your choice of colour (I think the factory colour was called Tropicana green on the real ones) and your choice of wheels! That grille Matchbox put on this casting is just wrong if you're an Aussie, it looks more like the "egg crate" grille that was specific to the earlier HQ model cab chassis one tonner only rather than a HX. There was both a factory high ground clearance version of HQ-HZ model utes (1971-1980) and also a third party custom builder who made actual four wheel drive version of both utes and station wagons back in the day, both were called Overlanders and using a Toyota Landcruiser chassis for the conversion. As I have mentioned to several other restorers/customisers from outside Australia, if you ever have any questions regarding Aussie cars just ask I'm happy to help out. Anyway I'm off to continue watching the rest of the shop truck videos, they've all been top notch so far.

Thanks mate, appreciate the insight! Yeah I did think the grille didn't match anything I had seen but sort of went with it an extended it as a kind of custom grille. Perhaps one way to get around licensing of the casts

The simple colour scheme really works. Looks like you need a bit of practice with the waterslides. The choice of decal paper AND spray seems to be really crucial with these, you seem to get what you pay for and cheapest usually isn't best. Trial and error, I guess. The Holden is a good-looking choice for the build though, well done.

Not sure about the grille unfortunately, not sure many people do reproductions. The transparencies I usually get through model-supplies.co.uk, I think they do one for the dogs. Thanks for the comment!

Like your choice and just some fyi there is a way to deal with the yellowed windows try putting it into a ziplock baggy with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide then leave it in the sun for a bit and that should deal with the yellowing ive seen it done ive also seen the process done with a uv 💡 as well

For a history of Holden. If you can source the book "She's a Beauty" by Don Loffler, you will have a concise history of Australia's own car the Holden 48/215 or the FX as it later became known.

Exept for the raised rear Axle this is a very nice custom work. A Tailgate would be nice to. The storage of the old Bullbars would always immediatly destroy the paintjob of a real car. There should be a protectiv wall behind the Cabin. I would like to see such a truck in a military style like in so many countries used by regular and irregular Troops. (also an "Jurassic-Park" car would be interesting.
