This is my first steam engine makeover, the model is one of Matchbox's 'Models of Yesteryear' range. Built between 1959 and 1963 it is a 1/130th scale model of a Great Western Railways (GWR) 3031 Class steam locomotive.
This is a beautiful looking little miniature with its chocolate brown chassis, green boiler and gold highlighted details.
I had two of these models and in a moment of self indulgence I decided to paint the second one a deep high gloss maroon.
I so hope that you approve and that you enjoy the end story which , incredibly, took over four hours to produce!!
Thanks to Joshua Brown and James Orton who donated the vehicles.

Marty, I have been a fan for quite awhile. I am disabled and spend alot of time in bed. Watching videos on you tube has become part of my daily routine, so I get quite excited when I see one of my favorite youtuber posting videos. Yes, I'm talking about you. One thing I really love about you is when people send you items, you make it a point to show that you are using the gifts they sent. I can see that you have a big heart and are a good person. Anyway, thanks for making my days better by posting your videos. I love your humor as well. Take care from Russ in Connecticut USA

Train nerd here - the large brass 'dome' is where steam is collected to send to the cylinders, since the locomotive's boiler is usually filled with water - you don't want to be sending water through the cylinders. The..."pillar" or "horn" shape to the rear is unique to Great Western Railway - it's where the overpressure safety valves are housed, something other railways usually didn't do, just simply venting the valves straight to the atmosphere. Mostly a style thing. Many American locomotives especially (Like the Santa Fe Locomotive at the end of the video) will have another dome besides the steam dome - this was used to carry sand to grit wet rails in front of the wheels for traction. Usually the sand dome will be forward of the steam dome and will have pipes going around the boiler and down towards the wheels.

Yes sir you nailed that. A steam dome and also by looking at the size of the engine and the flanges on the main driver and guide wheels it could possibly fit on N-Scale track.👍😁😁

Engine is an Achilles class 4-2-2 of 1891, known as the 3031s, easily confused with Iron Dukes. Big wheels - driving wheels. Small wheels - leading and trailing wheels. Gold helmet - steam dome. Tender - missing in action. Hotel - Trivago. Have not finished, but if by the end she has a tender, its a separate wagon pulled behind the engine. 3065 actually took part in the making of the first engine to achieve 100mph, as she took over from the 100mph breaking engine (3440 City of Truro) to bring home the train from Bristol to Paddington. The colour the last owner put on their is very close to real GWR green, so the old owner did well..

You did an excellent job of restoring them and I like the dark red version too. I love it, Marty. I'd love to see more Matchbox locos and rolling stock being fixed. I think instead of worrying with the dental tools if the paint won't come off, I think a second scrub with a rough plastic brush (like a toothbrush but those strange wire brushes, I'm not sure how to explain) Also since you're struggling with engine part names, I'll help ya. The brass bell looking thing on the boiler is a dome. It's for the steam. The hell would usually be over the firebox at the cab or at the front but this is a British loco so they don't have bells. The bumpers are called buffer beams, they hold where the buffer stops and coupling hooks to couple up other coaches and trucks togehter. BUFFERS are there to be bumpers to not have the couple crash together and break. The reason the model has a lot of gold highlights is because that's brass, most older and fancy engines use a lot of brass to make thin look nice, on the model the real life basis wouldn't have any brass smokebox door at all, not a brown smomebox. It would be black along with the footplates but the sides stay brown. If you have any questions of more engine parts, I'll happily explain for you. -[Ryan.]

Marty as always you amaze me with your knowledge on so many different technical areas, i.e. software, hand tools, painting, 3-D printing, decal making and ect. I'm specially interested in how you convert the Sketch-up drawings to the files necessary to do a 3-D print....Is there any possibility of you doing a clip on the process of converting the Sketch-up files to STL or other 3-D files? All the best and keep on entertaining and amazing us. Bob

@MartysMatchboxMakeovers 5 лет назад
Bob, it's really simple to do. You export your design files from Sketchup into your 3D model folder. When you select export, Sketchup presents you will every known 3D file type under the sun. You select the file type before clicking on the export button.

@sheep1ewe
@sheep1ewe 5 лет назад
It is the brass cover for the steam dome, a small pressurised steam expansion chamber, yes there where also often the place where the pressure relief valve was mounted on top of it, but the function of the big steamvalve there is to regulate the main steam outlet to the engines on those early models.

That brass dome on top is actually the top of a bell, minus the hammer. It's official name is the bell end. They were often kept highly polished because there's nothing like a shiny clean bell end to impress the passengers. Seriously though, I think it is called the steam dome. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_dome

I've got the 1961 Tri-Ang version of this, the mould looks surprisingly similar. Looks like the previous owner repainted it in a later Great Western Railway green, but your restoration looks gorgeous! Love the way you edit these and all the attention to detail you put in. Any plans to look at some of the other Matchbox yesteryear models? Also, I really like that red one - Reminds me of the Midland Railway's color scheme

Lol) sheet of plywood, you could have a military stock yard or a race track or just a freeway, highway, Autobahn thing. A wheel tappers hammer would have a longer shaft and smaller head, you want to get a good tone from the wheel or its tyre. I looked up the GWR 3031 (or Achilles) Class of Dean Singles. I never knew they were generally built as 2-2-2 locos, the first 30 in a convertable Broad Gauge, then the remainder to Standard Guage the 30 were later rebuilt at 4-2-2 and to Standard Guage but I dont know if the conversions were done at the same time or in two conversions. Anyway 3065 Was Built as a 4-2-2 as Duke Of Connaught (The title of Victoria's Son, Arthur). Holding the rail speed record for the distance of Bristol To London in 1904 of just under 100 minutes. Other notable locomotives were 3041 James Mason ( named The Queen from 1897 to 1910 when used on Royal Train duties ). 3050 Royal Soverign left Swindon Works in Photographic Grey livery , presumably repainted into GWR Brunswick Green before entering service. In total the final number of 3031 locomotives was 80 in total, so you can do one of each. I think the smokebox should be black with silver handrails (see Tri-Ang Lord Of The Isles and Hornby's Lorna Doone) rather than Lesneys Choice of Colors (or was the gold paint used by GWR for Royal Train Locomotives ?)
@cannyuk
@cannyuk 5 лет назад
Great job on those Locomotives, The big round gold thing you painted is the dome. On British locos the bits you painted chocolate are always red on the sides and black on any up-facing areas (the running boards). The whole front end of the boiler is always black including the boiler door and funnel. The numbers on the base of the loco after it's name relates to the number of wheels to engine has so The Duke Of Connaught was a 4-2-2 loco, 4 small wheels at the front. 2 Big driving wheels in the middle and 2 small wheel on the end. The Duke Of Connaught was a real life loco, a Great Western Railway (GWR) 3031 Class Broad Gauge engine. It would have also have had a tender to hold coal and water.
