Over the Winter I Decided to try and sort the Matchless Model X out properly. The bike was now running, but there were still a lot of jobs to be done. I therefore stripped some parts off the bike to have them re-chromed or chromed, the cylinder heads were removed to replace the leaking head gaskets (and repaint the barrels and heads), the carburettor serviced to improve starting and the toolbox repainted black to reduce the amount of red.

That’s the first sidevalve I’ve seen with the head off. I reckon it could be very confusing the first couple of times of trying to set this one up, with cylinder ports being different way round & then mag going one direction etc. Good to hear the cracks by the spark plug holes are not considered an issue.

I have to admit that it confused me! Especially as the ignition timing lever on my old '54 Matchless G3LS worked the other way round!
