Matchless Model X: Petrol Pipe Fitted and Fuel Taps Mended

Over the Winter I Decided to try and sort the Matchless Model X out properly. The bike was now running, but there were still a lot of jobs to be done. As part of that work I decided to replace the petrol pipe as it had a big, plastic fuel filter that I didn't like, and also to mend the fuel taps by fitting new cork seals as they were both weeping fuel

Filters are so useful, there must be a period looking alternative !!

I've never had a filter fitted to any of my bikes, ever (50 years plus) and never had a problem. Mind you, I've always ensured my tanks were clean inside.

If, as you say, one of the taps was leaking when the petrol is turned on then the cork the other side of the slide, the bottom cork, needs to be renewed as well. I find it is best to renew both corks on each tap at the same time as they are most likely to be the same age and in the same state.

Nice job Chris! I too am a bit like you, all my clamps, length of pipes, etc. on my Commando face the same way, writing on the pipes hidden. It has to look nice - the little details matter!! May i ssk what brand of clamp vise you are using, where to purchase one - thank you. Mark

Hi Mark, I have two clamps both if which work fine: one is made by Factory Image Racing but the other isn't labelled. I'm afraid I've no idea where I bought them from. I'd post a picture but there's no facility to do that on here.
