At my work, years before I worked there, the steel supplier switched to an oil impregnated steel. Took a while for them to figure out why the paint was coming off. The oil would seep out over time and cause a loss of adhesion.
There is no such thing as oil impregnated hot or cold rolled steel. The only oil impregnated steel available is sintered (a compressed powdered product) which is not hot or cold rolled, and used for bearing surfaces. That said, your supplier may have provided a rust preventive (RP) oil coating, but that is unusual. Most welding, painting, coating issues are due to not properly cleaning the steel before fabrication.
hahahah you right man! hey i would most def have that new 3s box from them that thing is pretty sweet. but at the time i bought this box they didnt have what they have now but if i had to chose now id dang sure go with the harbor freight box!
the solution is warranty your dealer needs to make that right. The paint code can be found if you call matco and give them your serial number and maybe even online. That is a defect from them. You paid good money for it and should get something worth while. Hope this help. God bless and remember all things for Gods glory.
thats exactly what ill do is call matco and see about the paint code and see if they will warranty it for me because you are right.. thats alot of money for something that should idealy last a lifetime to only make it 4 years and already look 50 years old.. kinda a big let down.. i used to love my box until this happened now i feel sick every time i look at it.. thank you so much god bless you too!
@@gills3141 hahahah funny you say that that’s what I told myself at first when it happened I was like hey it don’t look that bad it’s just that patina look hahah
This is commonly due to the manufacturer not properly preparing the steel before the paint operation. Most steel furniture (tool boxes, etc.) use cold-rolled steel due to its superior surface finish. No matter how clean it looks or feels, there will be residues from the master coil production, and from the slitter operation. For instance, the slitter operation could be running hot rolled pickled and oiled, then swap over to slit cold rolled. No matter how careful, there will be oil carryover. Anyway, the toolbox manufacturer must clean the part before forming the drawers and body panels. Just like painting an automotive body panel, the surface must be free of all contaminates, primed, then painted. If the paint is flaking off, then that is an obvious sign of failure to properly prepare the part and should be warranted. They may try to claim extraordinary environmental factors existing in your shop, or some other nonsense, however, most manufacturers know when their processes have failed, so hold their feet to the fire.
From what I understand if it was bought through Matco you get lifetime warranty I think even if you didn’t buy from them but have all legal paper work. I’d definitely be contacting them to at least see if they would cover taking it to a local paint shop and sending over some paint
Well I bought it from a Matco dealer myself but that’s been over 3 years ago and I’m sure I’ve lost the paperwork for it is the only bad thing.. and your right I really was under the impression that it had a lifetime warranty.. so I would think anyways
thats crazy man! i guess i just got a dud. which sucks bein this box is close to 3 grand.. i may paint it or wrap it and sell it to go towards one of them next harbor frieght boxes with a hutch and a side locker those are super sweet!!
Make a good fuss about it and have them upgrade it. That warranties there for a reason. Ive had this which cheaper boxes but im on better husky and a sams club brand. Its the metal underneath isnt properly sealed and during the bend and sheet weld process they start to corrode. Cheap steel too but get that fixed you spent too much on that nice box for that issue so early on
thats what im going to do today! im goin to do exactly that.. cause you are right man i spent way too much money for it to look as bad as it does.. and trust me its not at all from me not taking care of it.. i used to wipe it down atleast twice a week before all this happened! i took pride in my box as anyone would and should.. but with the way it looks its put a bad taste in my mouth latley.. heck ive seen boxes 40 years old in no where near the shape as mine.. its kinda bs honestly.. thanks for the comment guy like i said ill def hassel with them folks and update yall with the out come!
@@FlatRateTech that’s a really good question I was gonna call them about my box too. I’ve been noticing that rust and paint flaking off. I had box about say what six years and I know it’s already doing it but still I know guys will snap on and Cornwell boxes that don’t even do that and they have theirs way longer.
I’ve had large craftsman boxes for about 15 years. There are a couple of areas that are rusting, but nothing really bad. I’ll eventually restore these areas myself…eventually.
that is crazy to me! i really thought it was just me to be honest.. ill be sure to not buy from them again espically tool boxes.. and i also dont buy and wouldnt buy any tools from them at all i used to before i knew better about them bein rebranded and 300 percent mark up! i learned my lesson on that
@@FlatRateTech its not every single box but i have seen enough of them do this to say a good amount do idk if its just me living in the Texas Coast or they having quality control problems but i stay away from them unless they super cheap
@@dropndeal its just crazy that my USG2 snap-on mac and cornwell boxes all hold up great but everytime i had a matco craftsman kobolt ect they never last
My snap on box got some brake fluid slung on it and it looks way different. It melted thru the paint and looks weird. His issue is something in the paint preparation from factory causing the paint peeling off. This is definitely a paint/prep issue. Maybe the metal had something on it to prevent rusting and it wasn't removed properly before painting.
