Organisation is cheap. You just have to be vigilant about putting tools back in their designated place. I learned that from my grandfather 50 years ago.
It seems like with a couple hours of 3D printing, you could make custom holders. They would fit your needs exactly, and it wouldn't take too much time in CAD to design them. I personally would probably want an option where I could have socket sets and have them fit together like puzzle pieces so that I can add two of the same sizes or add more as I expand each set.
Sam Shim lots of engineering is going into them now. Check out my latest video. They are working on less setup time and a whole bunch of new pieces. It’s only gonna get better. Thank you for the feedback, more to come!
Very good video with good info! A guy in my shop put this in his Snap On cart and it works great. He didn't have as much information about it as you give in this video. I appreciate it!
That is freaking sweet. This is the first time I'm seeing this organizer set up. I definitely need a couple of these sets however I also need another large box or maybe two more small boxes either way I need more boxes and another cart. But thank you ABD because you know you got the wheels spinning in my head again...
It really came out awesome Dan! I wish they had more colors or maybe variations on colors, like red with a white stripe, to mark different sockets...but you can always make a like on the mat with a white Inkzall or something. I also wish they used a smaller screw and an expanding peg(Kinda like a drywall anchor) to screw down the 1/4" but that's really splitting hairs. I'll never needs something like this but I damn sure want it! Definitely worth it for a Pro!
@@jeffreyeiford2750 yes, when there was nothing on the Matco truck, every week I would order the newer grey pieces. If you don’t have a truck, I find that the Obsessed Garage website is starting to supply more pieces. If he doesn’t have the pieces, he seems to be a good dealer from them so I would definitely email if he doesn’t have them. He also has a cool channel here too!
I stock refurbished Craftsman sets, that we professionally clean and refurbish. Let me know what you need/want. For matched sets, I have EE, G, G1, G2 codes, others.
gbowne1 Sounds tempting, but more then likely, I might replace those craftsman with either the new Wera or some reasonable Gedore or ks tools. I will have a pretty nice set of USA craftsman at home plus I have bags of USA sockets at home as well. I’ll sure send people to you if they are looking for some old school craftsman sockets though! 👊💪
IMHO it looks like the biggest problem is you can't see the different sizes of the sockets until you remove one, then you find out it's not the size you wanted. Thanks for posting the video.
If you use it daily, you'll know. I never look for what size it is in my cart, because I know what sockets are what. Worse case Ontario I just count from one end of the set to the size I need.
I just ordered a set from jb tools so I'll be re organizing my box. I'll finally get to take all those sockets out of their cases👏 that's going to free up some room for some more tools😳
Im setting up my new box now...and its killing me lol. I cant afford the grid but Ive drooled over it. In my old box I had play mat EVA foam cutouts (shadow lining) and it was great...until I would buy a new tool, then scramble to find a place that was easy to cut and add it...which resulted in tools scattered. Now, Im using the magnetic organizer things, and the Ernst socket trays, which are ok, fairly cheap and saves me on cutting foam. I still have to cut some of course because...OCD lol. But the weird thing is that, I had an old Mac Christmas Tree setup, and it was packed. Now I have a Matco 2bay and hutch, and things are looking kinda empty LOL. My top drawer is packed but its amazing what I was able to do with fewer tools (not by choice, the whole cutting and all would keep me from getting something I actually could have used). Now...I can finally get a nice set of swivel wrenches, and I have been eyes the Wera drivers...and the Nepros, although those are like fine cutlery. Not sure if Id be using them or just looking at them purdy tools LOL. Nice box. Im probably going to do a similar vid...once Im done in about oh...5 months? 9 tops!
Damn that’s expensive, it hurts to spend that type of money when it’s not perfect (wobbly, raw cuts, extra holes for dirt) and not tools! I might just 3D print mine or make a mold to pour them.... especially for some lime green! I’m still debating whether this is a solid solution or design my own with this in mind...
I am just getting into matco products I don't have a dealer so it's full retail from the website for me, I have been looking at the tool grid a great option but the price is a killer even though in all reality you'd probably spend the same on putting any other bands together to make some thing work. Looks really good. Can't wait to get my new setup up and going. Working out of 3x72in boxes is killing me or maybe the fact I keep buying tools is killing me lol. My 12 point game is weak, I think I am going duo socket by grey pneumatic for my 12 points so I can have thin wall and 12 point.
Tarek Ashurex yeah, these are pretty much sold exclusively through Matco, I don’t Think these will ever be on sale in the flyer. I paid the same price, only difference is the shipping maybe. Hopefully this company can get big enough to sell on their own.
That looks fantastic, that must have taken you forever to get set up but definitely worth it. It is always nice to start a reorganization and actually end up with more space. I know exactly what you mean about not filling up Hanson trays with full socket sets, custom is the way to go.
I got the Matco set years ago at a very premium price. I complained to my dealer about the price. I got my degree in CNC machining and had acquired Mastercam and Solidworks. I copied the design and 3D printed a set of them. I even machined some out of billet. End of the day, it's cheaper to buy Matcos. LOL
Haha, yes, I didn’t do the math all the way but I started adding up the rails needed for regular organizers vs the Toolgrid. For a full sized upper drawer on a seasoned Tech, you’re looking at more for the rails versus the Toolgrid! Lol
I have the older craftsman board and peg for sockets and wound up with the space issues like yours between 18 and 19. It’s a shame they didn’t address that issue with the Matt system. There is a generic version I found on Amazon that was about 60 bucks. This system is the best for custom layout just expensive.
Looks awesome. I know you said they don’t move around what ab in a cart? I’ve got one of the Matco Jamestown 6 drawer service carts and I work in a plant and like to be able to push my cart out to a machine that’s down. How do you think they’d stay put?
I never had them in a cart, if you’re rolling in a normal shop they should be fine. If there’s major ditches and a lot of hopping around in the shop, it may be an issue and I would go for locking socket holders. Ernst and Carlisle has some
Looks great the cost is crazy though. I did my sockets on a board it came out nice. You spend as much organizing the tools as you spend on the tools . I do like the system it’s good.
Hey Dan , I just saw tool box widget’s socket organizer ,,, naw I still like the Matco system . How’s it working out for you ? It’s been about a year that you’ve had yours ? For the extensions you used which piece for them ? I still love your organization !! Mouse
Still the best if you’re a seasoned tech. I find myself buying more stuff so it works out perfect. For the extensions I really like the long thin drawer that most toolboxes have. But if you don’t have too many extensions then putting them on the top drawer with the padded perches would do just fine. Staggering them works the best.
I have some Universal Crows Feet, and the regular crows feet what pieces would I need to mount them? It looks like the 3/8 socket holders would would work on the regular crows feet, but not on the universal ones. Your advise please. A great video, thanks for posting it.
@Bob Johnson the regular 3/8 should work fine, you could pair them together and face the forks out. On the universal ones, I would have to see. Seems like as long as you balance them in right, they should stay.. maybe put them against the wall of the drawer?🤷♂️
@@AutobahnDan Thank you so much for the reply. I took a chance and ordered the 3/8 socket holders for the regular crows feet but for the universal ones I ordered the universal holders hopeful that should work. Many thanks.
@@AutobahnDan The other problem I have quite a few of the old time ratchet on both ends box wrenches which are quite thick. The medium wrench holders won't fit on any of them. If you use the flat large holders they will work but take up a lot of space in the drawer. I would like to find a way to be able to stand them up on edge so it would take up a smaller amount of space. Any ideas? I would think they must have something that would work., possible the universal holders? Your opinion please again. Many thanks.
@@bobjohnson8206 hmm, I would definitely have to see those. I noticed that the fat handles on some of mine hold quite well on the smaller handle holders with the rubber pads and they don’t look that bad hanging up too high..
Seems like an awesome product, I just can’t wrap my mind around just *how damn expensive* it is... like... $150 for JUST the *plastic* (sure its a “nice” plastic, but..) “pegboard” backing-board... Just sounds like a seriously ludicrous price... Even $50 would be a little pricy for that pegboard IMHO... I just do NOT see the justification in that price, it’s not like they’re *hand drilling* every individual hole or something.... I don’t see ANY way that the “labor” could realistically be a significant aspect of this products manufacturing cost... Definitely CNC’d (the pegboard) and they surely have reusable molds for the other pieces, no doubt... I can see the pieces with the magnet installed as being a semi-fair price, I’ll give em THAT one... but even after considering the cost of their materials used (assuming QUALITY plastics...), then you have labor (MINIMAL), manufacturing (the ‘molds’) and then the *design/engineering* cost (which yes, it’s a brilliant design & all, but as you stated *it isnt perfect* and it seems the Design aspect is VASTLY being “overvalued” re: the List Price to customers..) and that is MOSTLY it... It just doesn’t make sense to me at all, and I figure that they could HALF the asking price and STILL have incredible margins for this product... In fact, they would probably make *MORE* by most likely selling muchhh much higher volumes of this product... Just send out a bunch of ‘no-strings-attached’ thorough kits to RU-vidrs & if it’s a good product, (which this seems to be...) then for real- it’s probably the *best* exposure/marketing strategy for increasing awareness and *creating* customers out of thin air and in turn they move MUCH more product & MUCH MORE $$ MADE... (side note: this is something more manufacturers would/SHOULD wholeheartedly embrace this if they got *smart*...) Ugh, sorry for the “essay”, but having *some* insight into this products design & obvious manufacturing processes and then seeing what they’re then pricing it at... the complete *ludicrous/BS Alarm* was deafeningly loud to me... Anyways, clean drawers & organization you have btw 👌 and I still appreciate your video..!! Cheers
Ty Comes - TVPC Production yeah, it may not be worth it if the person doesn’t have that many sockets. But if you have as many sockets as me, and growing, it’s really not much more then a rail setup. I would need 12 rails at $10 each just to start at $120 and I would still need several more to cover the ratchets and the extensions! It still can be hard to justify for some people, there’s so many job types out there. A lot of people may never know about this option because they don’t have a Matco dealer. So hopefully this company can grow and have more selling options then just the Matco truck in the future. Thanks for your opinion! 👍👍 and thanks for watching!👍
It would cost me $300 to get the starter kit with some of the holders and enough extra base to fill out the drawers in my box. My box is an old HF 26" beast that I paid $149 for. This is a gorgeous setup... but, yeah, the price is absurd. Got me thinking about how to make a po' man's pegboard version though.
@@AutobahnDan I freaked out for a second bc i just spent like $400 on the set. Good thing mine is up to date. Seems like Mantis did a last minute change
@@canoeshoe should be all updated now, The new pieces have been out for a while. The trays, heavy tool organizers, and socket rail holders are all hopefully showing up this year!
Was up Dan I'm a diesel tech with a service truck. I'm looking for some tool organizer for my truck do you think this set up will be good for a service truck?
bambam680 I should work decent enough. The newer grey pieces available from cornwell have rubber non slip coating for the handle and tip holders. I don’t know about heavy jumping around though.. I never had issues of this first generation falling out of place with the drawer slamming.. hope this helps
That looks awesome! Too bad you had to go through all of those other organization styles to find what worked best for you. But we live we learn we get luvs
I like that somewhat but having the sockets with all the ratchet and extensions looks like lots of wasted space. Dont get me wrong looks good. I know I am working on making a socket organization system maybe to sell
Wooden pegboard holes are more spread apart, you would actually lose more space and have less options to organize. Also, the screws would not hold, They will break off over time because tools are heavy. You can use screws and nuts and washers but that will be more work..
No no no, 2 drawbacks 1 - can’t take out as a rail if you need to and it’s not labeled . earnest tray rails best way to go for money , rai ls detach from tray and it’s all labeled, you can label the tray 1/4 and label the rails themselves
This is a nice set up. Im gonna do this my tools one day. How much did you spend? My top drawer looks exactly like yours. Base on your tools that you have it looks like you work on BMW.
JAE MARPLE so far a bit over $300 with some extra bags of pieces so I never have to worry about getting another ratchet or small socket set for a while. It also came to that price because I wanted all red in the top drawer and didn’t use the blue.
200 dollars for a 49 inch by 22 1/2 inch piece of plastic they are out of their fucking minds! That doesn’t include all the pieces for the sockets either that just includes the holders for a couple ratchets and extension. How these companies stay in business is beyond me. But I guess if you are getting people to pay 200 bucks for 3 dollars worth of plastic you have pretty good profit margins. I would just go buy a 3D printer and make my own.
Not yet, I am still a big fan of the Mac Tools/OEM Tools ones.. only because they go all the way to the back and it’s just plain simple. The toolgrid also raises up the space in the wrench drawer so I’m not a fan of that either..
