Bro, this is the most kind, loved and passionate scent review I have seen, high five to you! PS I came here from a hard time looking for Loewe base notes I couldn’t find anywhere else
I used to warm up labdanum coils (they kinda look like doodies) and the dirty warmed burned caramel scent lasted for days in my apartment. It was very conforting but also quite 'heavy'. Lovely in winter I guess.
Labdanum is the star in Le lion and what a great fragrance indeed. Your description is spot on about this fragrance. Great release. I am looking up now to grow a cistus or rockrose plant!
Great content yet again, my favourite Labdanum even over Le Lion is Labdanum de Seville - L'Occitane, puts you right there in that resinous, sticky, warm nose tingling zone.... images of hot sunny days to come. Looking forward to more of these..... Immortelle should be a corker!
I first treally noticed labdanum just ttoday, when I tried a sample of Shanghai Tang Oriental Pearl... I was expecing maybe leather, cassis, possibly orchid, iris or orris... at a stretch blackberry... and maybe sandalwood. Fragrantica didn't give the details of what's in itt But they say the creator went the Silk Road finding inspiration for the ingredients and selecting tradtional Chinese ones. I wanted their ginger flower scent but tcouldn't get it. They do include patchouli... amber, patchouli, benzoin and labdanum are listed.
Thanks Pep! Definitely a key component in middle eastern perfumery. I get a wonderful blend in Chypre Palatin, but its characteristic marriage with either incense or patchouli can't be denied. Interesting how the material comes from a green, we extract it and then attempt to put the green back in when creating perfume. 🤭 Hurray for reductionism. 😆
Thank you for sharing about labdanum. I like how you associated to a colour in your mind. I knew it gave smoke and leather nuances to fragrances. I am going to take some time to examine which fragrances I have tried or own with this note and then see if I can make some constructive comments about it. I will get back to you if I feel I have something to say. 😅 Have a good day! - Jenn
I do enjoy labdanum and it’s warmth in fragrances like LDDM and Grand Soir. I definitely think that those scents would lack depth and complexity without it.
I finally got a sample of 1740 before Christmas and I enjoyed it. I am going to keep it for the cooler months though, where I feel it is more suited for me. Looking forward to the next note💜
I loved the chapter about labdanum and am reading lavender now myself :-D Out of my perfumes, beside Patchouli Nobile, I would say Une Rose Chyprée has a good portion.
İ just came across your videos, they are great. İm Wondering what you opinion is on Diptyque philosykos... İ thought i like but after smelling it I'm surprised people buy it! ( Not labdanum but i thought id ask!)
Well, the last time I wore it was maybe 5-6 years ago. It was basically the first fig perfume I tried, but back then I just remember it being very weak, nice, but not memorable. But I just really haven't tested enough to give a definitive opinion.
In all honesty I find it confusing to sniff out labdanum. I did think I understood it, but the more I sample perfumes the more confusing it becomes. I own Patchouli Nobile (sampled on the strength of your review) which to me seems labdanum heavy. I based that off my memory of Landanum 18 by Le Labo, which reminds me of Shalimar. I was sure I understood, but then I was confused between perfumes with musk and labdanum, and then even more confused between Iris and labdanum and musks. I think have to get a sample of actual labdanum. Thanks a lot.
Yes, you would probably enjoy smelling assorted aroma chemicals/oils. Try to buy them from a perfumers supply house, which has higher quality than aromatherapy shops.
