Check out Nina Greenberg’s 7th Grade math class at Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) in New York City, NY to see structures and teacher moves that cultivate students’ math identity. We define math identity as a person’s beliefs about:
+ Themselves as math learners (growth mindset). “I can develop my knowledge and skills with effort, strategies, and support.”
+ How they are perceived by others as a math learner (sense of belonging). “I feel like an accepted and valued member of this mathematical community.”
+ Math and the nature of math abilities (perceived utility). “I believe math is a creative discipline that is useful, worthwhile, and relevant to life now and in the future.”
Math agency is the external expression of students’ mathematical identities or beliefs about themselves in connection to mathematics. As you watch, we encourage you to identify and name the micro and macro teacher moves that support the development of students’ mathematical identities and agency.
