Thank you for this video, Susan! I’m a homeschooling mom and have learned so much from your videos. My favorite math curriculum, Singapore Math, uses a concrete to pictorial to abstract approach which has worked really well for my kids. I wish I had learned math this way!

This is a great strategy for all students. I used this strategy with my entire class in 4th and 5th grade. It definitely helps students understand the math they are doing rather than jumping straight to the abstract. I now use this strategy as a math interventionist.

I have never heard of this before. I will definitely be using it in my first grade class this year! Thank you for explaining it so well.

Yes! Students need a solid foundation before moving to abstract. It allows students to understand and conceptualize vs just doing

I've never heard of CRA. I'm going to use it to teach my 3rd graders about multiplication. Thank you!

We used CRA all the time at the school I student-taught at. That school was Montessori though, and I haven’t seen it really since

Awesome Job! I've been advocating for this method all through Primary (CRA or CPA) I came across it after discovering Jerome Bruner :)

Great reminders, as my 4 and 5 year olds are all over the place with different math skills and I struggle to gauge where they are with certain skills!

Representation is also using provided pictures like we use with students with disabilities. We also use number chart

My grandson just turned 5 a month ago. The just finished figuring out for me there’s 1440 mins in 24 hours. Check out the Number Blocks series on RU-vid. Nothing crazy, it’s mainly the music and way the blocks are presented. Never seen anything like it after raising 7 kids and enjoying 9 grands.

What are your feelings on fact memorization? Is that more/less important than conceptualization?
