Math or Art? Patterns in 'Moon like' motions | Animated video by Mathing

The moon orbits the earth in a circular path. Simultaneously the earth is also rotating around the sun. Again, the sun is also rotating around the galaxy. So what is the actual path followed by the moon? Although this video doesn't show the actual 'path' of the moon, it does show how different nested satellite systems can produce amazing patterns.

Note: This video doesn't depict the actual distances and speed of orbit of the sun, earth and moon. If the sun is considered as stationary, the moon should form a flower-like pattern with 12 loops, but in reality the distance of moon-earth compared to that of earth-sun is so small that these 'loops' can not form, rather if seen from above, it would look like a normal orbit with slight indentations.
All orbits were considered circular, so bye bye Ellipse!
For the physicists: One might argue that how can the radius of the satellite's orbit be greater than that of the planet itself. But this is where we mathematicians have the upper hand. We can simply imagine such a case and enjoy the pattern hehe :p
For those interested, I've rendered separate images of these 10 patterns, which you'll find in this link: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
These types of patterns can be called 'Spirographs' so Google it for more info.

These patterns are very relaxing and soothing to watch😌🧡 Indeed now I think that we ourselves are living in some sort of pattern 😄🧡

I remember doing something like this in Minecraft (with command blocks and armor stands). I remember when i made a cardioid and was like: "oh what's that? looks like a heart" (i was ~13 yo)

Do all of them rotate in the same pattern or each of them follows different pattern? And also do they change quite often and is it the same for the other planets too?
@Mathing

Glad you asked: - The pattern depends on following things: 1) Radius of orbit of the orbiting particles. 2) Speed of orbiting of the particles. If any of these things change, then the pattern will change as well. Now coming to the comparison with planets - here are a few things to consider: 1) Planets often do not orbit in circular paths, rather most of the time they orbit in an elliptical orbit. In case of earth, the eccentricity of the orbit is really close to that of a circle, so it is very very close to a circle. Although such kind of patterns are produced in elliptical orbits as well. 2) Radius of orbit of the planets and satellites vary from planet to planet. So each planet will produce a different pattern. Notes about this simulation vs real life orbits: This simulation has been prepared by giving some suitable radius and speed of orbit as input, which might not even exist in real discovered planets/satellites. The purpose of this was to demonstrate the patterns which can be generated from such kind of motions. Hope you found this reasonable!

@@Mathing So does that mean as the earth sun and moon has different radius so they would rotate at different patterns at the same time? If that is true then wouldn't there be any possibility of collision?
@Mathing
@Mathing 3 года назад
@@artz3757 No, moon has an exact orbit around the Earth, so does Earth around the sun which do not vary. So for Moon-Earth-Sun, there is a unique and constant pattern. But in case of a satellite of Mars, the orbit of the satellite to Mars and the orbit of Mars to Sun is different to that of the Moon-Earth-Sun. So there will be a constant pattern for Satellite-Mars-Sun which is not the same as the Moon-Earth-Sun.
