What I love about this trick is that you don't even have to touch the cards. You can hand someone a deck of cards, tell them what to do with the cards, and blow their mind.

This trick does not work in Danish either, but I have made two workarounds. #1: the easy one - I call it an exercise in English - problem solved :) Works from around 10 years and up. #2: I use the a magic word - Abracadabra - like this - first: Abra - second: Ca and third: Dabra. This even works with picture cards, so now the trick can be used for smaller kids (and very old people too :) Of course I reveal using "Truth" of "False" which in Danish is "Sandt" or "Falsk". Thanks for showing and sharing Dr Banana :)

Does it work for other languages? Well, if you get the maths behind it, you know what's significant and can work it out! Look: The 1st Word has to be at least 3 letters long. The card will ALWAYS be on the 7th position, as long as the 1st word has at least 3 letters. The 2nd one must be exactly 2 letters long, but not all languages spell an "of" (or similar) in between. like in german: "King of Hearts" is just "Herz König" But you can just do a work-around and say you need to count 2 cards on the second go through. After the 2nd go through with the 2 cards to count, the card we are looking for will ALWAYS be on the 5th position. The 3rd word has to be at least 5 letters long. The card will stay on the 5th position, no matter what. The 4th word "truth" must be exactly 5 letters long, to get to the 5th card obviously. So it probably wont work with every language. I tryed it in german, and it is not possible, since we spell "Spades" as "Pik" and it has only 3 letters. Maybe you can find a different solution in your own language. Just remeber the pattern: 1st: at least 3 letters 2nd: exactly 2 3rd: at least 5 letters 4th: exactly 5 You may have figured, that the card is already on the 5th position after the 2nd go through and doesn't change its position after that. the color and the word "truth" are just there for the fun. It is a coincidence, that every card-color has at least 5 letters in english and the word "truth" has exactly 5. In fact, the whole trick would not be that much fun, if it wasn't for that coincidence and the "of" in between ;) I hope my english isn't too terrible ^^

I was thinking exactly the same with Andreas Fischer and there is a similar problem in Greek, too. The word we use for "diamonds" is a 4 letter word in greek...
@palmomki
@palmomki 10 лет назад
Nassos Polyzoidis In Greek I guess you first put the genitive of the suit word (spades, heatrs etc), there's no "of" and then the name of the card. It means, assuming all the words you use are at least 3 letters long and at most 9 letters long, the card will remain in the 3rd position all along, then you just need a 3 letter word to substitute so "truth" and you have it.

Hi, Dr. Grimes!! Your #1 Yank fans here. Great trick. Is this trick similar?? Shuffle cards. Turn over top card. Whatever it is, let's say a seven..put down that first card and say aloud while placing the cards down face up...eight, nine, etc. and once you reach 13, put the last card down and turn the stack over. Start again, and do exactly the same thing. Aces can be either 1(meaning you count all the way to 13) and then turn pile over, or you say 11, and put two cards down from cards in your hand and turn pile over. Face cards are always counted as number 10. Once pile in hand is used and you can't count out any more cards, ask volunteer to pick up stacks of cards until three stacks remain. Have volunteer turn over top card in any TWO stacks, leaving one stack unturned. Have them hand you the cards they picked up. Count out ten cards. Then count out sum of the two turned up cards. Amount of cards left in your hand will equal unturned cards. I've had guests at parties steal my cards and sit for hours trying to get this trick to NOT work. Keep up GREAT vids.

I made it work in Dutch. It uses four pairs of cards instead of three stacks of three, and there needs to be one more pair underneath the pair that is chosen.

Doesn't work like that in German for several reasons: 1. "Pik", "Herz" and "Karo" are all three too short, only "Kreuz" is long enough 2. There is no "of" equivalent in German 3. The value is the second part of the cards name. But you can't just take less piles or less cards in a pile, because the German word for truth is "Wahrheit" which is 8 letters, so you have to play with at least 8 cards.

In french, there are 2 problems. First, Ace is As so if that's the lie, you're done. Second, Truth is Vérité so you won't land on the 5th card. I solve this by naming this trick 4 aces. Take away the aces from the pack and lay them face up. Do the trick while stipulating that Ace cannot be the lie. At the end, you say the Aces will capture all the lies and place a single card on each. The fifth card is therefore the truth so you flip it over.

the way I do it in german, 3 piles, 3 cars each (like in british), choose the middle card of a pile, put it back, pile on top, any word you want, put the pack on top, another word with less than 8 characters, put it on the top of the pack, then spell "wahrheit" or if the take "karo" or herz you can put the pack on top, and spell "wahr" instead
@CanadianGuillaume
@CanadianGuillaume 12 лет назад
If stating ANY card (like a-c-e, o-f, d-i-a-m-o-n-d-s) is a necessary step, I'm fairly confident that it can't be done in French with either 9 or more cards, since may or may not have a word as short as two letters first, always followed by a 2 letter word, then followed by a word that may be from 5 to 7 letters. It DOES work well with 8 cards if the card is placed second at first. It is less elegant than with 9 cards. The card will end up 5th. It is just a matter of finding a nice punchline.

Nice trick. For one further twist, you could get them (or someone else) to say 'TRUTH' or 'LIES' before you do the last count. Which ever they say you either count TRUTH and reveal the H, or LIES and reveal the next card (always the fifth card). Just a thought.

It's interesting. In Dutch we use the suits as adjective before the number. The suits have either length 6 or 8, the numbers have length 3, 4 or 5 and truth in Dutch could be translated to the four-letter word "waar". And in fact if you do the same trick, but in Dutch with first the suit and then the number. Finish it with "waar" and the only card in the stack of 9 cards that has a set destination will be the 8th card. It will move to the 4th spot. So in this case they will have to look at the middle card of a stack of choice, and then put the other stacks (they can choose which one first) on top of the stack they chose. And we have the same trick in Dutch.

Do you know the trick where you choose a suit of cards and (seemingly) pick them up randomly. You then spell each card, starting with A-C-E and for each letter place a cad under the 13 cards you hold in your hand. You then turn up the top card and it will be the Ace. Continue with the cards in hand (now 12 cards), and continue with T-W-O and turn up the top card and it will be the two. This continues right up to the king... Of course, the 'random' pick-up is not random, but it is incredible that someone worked this out... Do you know of it?

Use marked deck. Spectator chooses nine cards from the deck and divide into three piles. They choose pile and rotate cards face down until they choose to stop and memorise the face card. Their three cards replaced on top.Then magician makes crimp of corner under cover of hand.False haymow mix and correct to bring target card back to top. Lie/truth with identity and then either "truth" or "false". Spec decides. You pretend to read body language but read off the markings on the top card.

For the suit, you're essentially inverting the deck, in a sense. Since the card you're looking for is in the 5th position, and since the minimum letters used is also five, the card still ends up in position 5 after inversion.

About the chance of living in a odd numbered house. Suppose a street has n houses. In a street with an even number of houses, n is even and the chance of living in a odd numbered house is 0,50. In an street with an odd number of houses, the chance of living in any odd numbered house except for the last one is also 0,50. That goes for (n-1) houses. The additional chance of living in the last odd numbered house is 1/n. So the total chance of living in an odd numbered house in a street with an odd number of houses is [0,50x(n-1) + 1]/n = 0,50 + 0,50/n. Now the change of living in a street with an even number of houses is equal to the chance of living in a street with an odd number of houses: 0,50. So the chance of living in an odd numbered house is: 0,50x0,50 + 0,50 x (0,50 + 0,50/n) = 0,50 + 1/(4n) Now if this chance equals to 0,502, that yields the average number of houses to be: 0,50 + 1/(4n) = 0,502. -> 1/(4n) = 0,002 -> 0,008xn = 1 so n = 125. Isn't that a bit much for the average number of houses in any street, or am I making a mistake!? Gerben de Jong, Ede (Holland)
@zerid0
@zerid0 8 лет назад
It's probably a bit late to answer to you but the mistake you're making is that the average of the inverse is not equal to the inverse of the average. when you calculate the average probability of living in an odd numbered house you get 0.5 + 1/4*(average of 1/n) = 0.502 which gives average of 1/n = 0.008 but it doesn't imply that the average of n is 125.

TheGoluharikesh , here is what I do in the game, I let my opponent my take four middle cells of all the sides, like if you're going to do it in spreadsheet (MS EXCEL, or something), the cells would be A3,A4,A5 A6 of the left side and similarly of other sides . Then I take one of the second-last corners (diagonally) and let them take the corner. The I take the second-last cell from the corner (vertically or horizontally {depending on which cell you are taking}) , and I use that piece to flip the other pieces on the same side (after they have taken the other corner on same side). I use this method as the opponent cannot flip the piece which is in the cell next to the corner (vertically or horizontally). Thanks for making it to the last, you might also know this trick, but I figured out after playing with the computer.
