Absolutely delightful! I just have two requests. 1 - can we see MORE parents of mathematicians in future videos? and 2 - what is this "knots fewer than 8 crossings are alternating" business? Sounds like an interesting theorem for a future video! Why 8? Inquiring minds want to know.
@nebelwaffel8174
@nebelwaffel8174 2 года назад
For a knot not to be alternating (under-over-under-over-...), it would need to go over-over and also under-under at some point. I think, finding a knot with eight crossing, that has this double oder/under sequence in it, is the easy part. Prooving that no knot with 7 crossings or less can have this sequence is the hard part. Maybe doable via exhaustion?

Just imagine Matt Parker's poor mum. She'd be a Parker Mom.
@rmsgrey
@rmsgrey 2 года назад
The "big picture" answer to "why 8?" is that non-alternating knots are more complicated than alternating ones, so you need enough crossings to fit it in. There may be an insightful answer to why 8 is the least number of crossings where it works, or it could just be that some number has to be, and that's what it turned out to be.
@teeweezeven
@teeweezeven 2 года назад
I think I have an idea. -Knots need to have an even amount of crossings (if it goes over, it has to go under at the same place). -For the same reason, there has to be just as many overs as unders. This already makes two intersections necessarily alternating (and zero ones as well). For four, there is just one case to check (oouu). This turns out to be equivalent to the unknot. For six, there's 2 options (ooouuu and oouuou). I'd imagine checking those isn't too difficult either. And for 8, I'm assuming there is one, hence the 'fewer than 8'

It is a nice idea and pretty fun to do, I do have one rebuke which is that you call the one thing that everyone agrees is a hug a two non-hugs, which is pretty unfair to the word haha Also from experience, hug #2 which you considered the first true hug is how most men hug each other (and if I were to hug a woman that's taller than me I'd still use it, otherwise I'd be shoving my face in a place it doesn't necessarily belong)
