See what the National Park Service's Historic Preservation Training Center can do in their Frederick, Maryland facility. This HPTC woodcrafter creates a round column from straight pieces of wood. The columns will eventually be installed at the Stephen Mather Training Center in Harpers Ferry WV

A real craftsman stands on his workbench at times! I mean this as a compliment. Ingenious!

Totally amazing! I could not stop watching it being transformed... I still don't understand how lengthwise, the individual boards were flat, not accounting for angles after being strapped together. Magically , they appear to have been angled perfectly!! Wow! Great video, too. Thanks so much!

They use birds mouth router/joinery bits like this :www.amazon.com/Yonico-15139-Birds-Router-2-Inch/dp/B00KZM28Z8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1518193756&sr=8-3&keywords=bird+mouth+router+bit+set

Great video, but I would like more detail. An open column cannot be turned on a lathe. What was inserted to make it "lathable"? I would love to know. I have a project to do and could use the guidance, please.

I also wonder how the individual members were made. The gluing would require that they be incredibly straight and stable.

What is the Brand name on the Band clamps you used? How many did you have to use?

1:46 When and how did he put the duct tape on the staves? Clearly before furring strips beneath the mass. But how?

i wonder what species of wood was used. Those clamps are usually a minimum $140 apiece. Found some on sale $91. That's quite an investment, unless you do these a lot.

You can do the same thing with cheap ratchet straps that are available from almost anywhere. example from amazon.com www.amazon.com/Cartman-Lashing-Straps-600lbs-Carry/dp/B06Y5FDX7H/ref=sr_1_10?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1518194038&sr=1-10&keywords=ratchet+straps

Why in the world wouldn't you use epoxy? It has a much longer open time than Titebond.

@@colinm1502 you don't have to clean up, just let it set completely, and grind off with the wood on the lathe.

@@Dennis-kj1kz saw this after I got two glued together with titebond ii. I used blocks and countersunk screws for reinforcement in case weather weakens the glue.
