Colin Wilson's book 'The Space Vampires' was initially supposed to be his version of 'Dracula'. Given his fascination with being absorbed by ideas, it became an examination of the nature of what vampirism might mean if taken to its logical conclusion. The resulting novel would have been very difficult to film, but, thanks to a number of courageous men, Tobe Hooper's film (originally titled after the book but later changed to 'Lifeforce') had a go. It took core moments and characters from the novel, changed them significantly, and reinvented Wilson's book as the most fast paced and thrilling horror film since 'The Devil Rides Out'. Much derided in some quarters, it nevertheless remains the most thoroughly enjoyable horror film to be made in the UK since the demise of Hammer.
When I first saw it, I had been primed to expect a dismal film, but the experience of watching 'Lifeforce' on a big screen with a packed London audience who got all the poker faced humour and loved seeing their city reduced to zombies and rubble. For me, it remains a film that works as subtle comedy, action adventure and even, despite his distaste for the finish project, a distillation of some of the unfilmable themes of WIlson's book.
The cast of British actors supporting Steve Railsback in a classic throwback to the old Quatermass adaptations of having an American, best known for B-movies, play the lead in a film that is otherwise British to give it a touch of international appeal. Never mind that it was written and directed by Americans and financed by the powerhouse that was Canon Films. This was a film that played well almost everywhere except America (which means that many saw it as a failure when it was anything but). It was still playing in the West End a year later (although some wise soul had added 'Space Vampires' to the title) and remained on the circuit in Europe and Asia for a very long time. Despite the cream of British acting talent, headed by Frank Finlay and Peter Firth, the film is largely remembered for the lead actress, Mathilda May, who was game enough to play most of her role without the benefit of a wardrobe. The clips I have used here were carefully chosen not to reveal too much for a family audience. She was a French actress whose career was to go on to have an interesting career in films such as 'Naked Tango' and 'The Tit and the Moon', neither of which I have seen. She is still working today.

She is the most beautiful alien and vampire in the history of cinema.

And she seems to be so easily ignored by those who greatly admire most women in horror. She had such a presence in that film. I know I have never forgotten the image of her standing in that gothic cathedral captured in that beam of blue light. An indelible picture in my mind. The entire film also feels like a kind of coda for Hammer Horror. The melding of Quatermass with Vampires and the living dead.

I saw this movie when it came out in theaters. It wasn't a great film overall, but I _definitely_ liked the film for featuring Mathilda May, and not just because she was naked for almost all of her scenes; I simply thought she was just about the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.

She is quite unique. And she captures each scene she's in.

It really does the thing which movies so rarely do today. It raises a smile every time I see it.

this movie would have done much better if they got a more appealing main lead. Steve Railsback just seems flat in the role. the storyline actually has a great premise.

Knocked off JOURNEY TO THE SEVENTH PLANET. O'Bannon a derivative copycat at best.

That sounds like a film I need to track down and see as soon as possible. But the film adapts Colin Wilson's Space Vampires which, in turn, was loosely (and deliberately) inspired by the storyline structure of Bram Stoker's Dracula (hero encounters vampire in a distant region and inadvertently facilitates that vampire coming back to his home whereupon we see little of the vampire but see the destruction wrought by an outbreak of vampirism etc). I suspect that the interweaving of ideas and plot elements is always going to be a constant in science fiction and horror cinema. Thank you for pointing me in the direction of a film that, from its brief Wikipedia synopsis, sounds fascinating.

@dreamsofprojectedlight your point is well taken. And John Agar makes a fine leading man! Ray Bradbury may have cracked the original premise egg: ""Mars Is Heaven!" was adapted as a radio drama for numerous anthology series including Escape (June 2, 1950), Dimension X (July 7, 1950 & January 7, 1951), Think (1953), X Minus One (May 8, 1955), and Future Tense (July 1976). It was also adapted to the EC comic book Weird Science #18 (March-April 1953) by Al Feldstein and Wally Wood. It was also adapted as an episode of The Ray Bradbury Theater (July 20, 1990) starring Hal Linden and Paul Gross. It was also translated into Bengali by Satyajit Ray, a friend of Bradbury's, with permission from the author. This version can be found in the book Braziler Kalo Bagh O Onanyo (The Brazilian Cat & Others). It was also dramatized as the Second Expedition to Mars in the 1980 TV mini-series adaptation of Bradbury's science fiction anthology "The Martian Chronicles."

@@WimGrundy I read this story but not under that title, in the collection, 'The Martian Chronicles' a long long time ago. I think I read the collection twice but the second reading would have still been about thirty years ago but the idea of aliens making us see what we want to see rings such a bell that the events of the stories are beginning to unwind in my head (incorrectly I am sure). The story was probably an influence on an early 'Star Trek' episode where Dr McCoy meets this ravishing woman he once loved but everyone else sees someone different according to their expectations or desires. In this episode she is actually a vampire who sucks all the salt from human beings. They could have just brought her some salt if they'd only known. I grew up reading Bradbury as he was always such an easy and engaging writer. I love the way his Martian Chronicles stories feel like a history of our colonisation of that planet. We are all Martians now. He also had a series of connecting stories collected in the book, 'The October Country', which, unfortunately, I remember even less well. Never really thought about Satyajit Ray beyond his films and they were always a little on the neo-realism end of the spectrum for me. But thanks for all your remarks. Very interesting.
