Make Noise Maths is one of the most common - but also least understood - modules in the Eurorack world, and with Behringer's release of the Abacus, even more people are using it. In the fourth video in this series, I'm going to tackle the voltage generation, the mixer, attenuators, SUM, OR & INV outputs and more.
0:00:00 - Introduction
0:00:58 - Voltage generation
0:02:54 - Attenuverting
0:06:21 - Mixing/Summing
0:07:10 - Scale & Offset
0:09:00 - SUM, INV & OR
0:14:38 - Voltage rectification
0:16:10 - Voltage cheat sheet
As always, the diagrams I use in the video are available online at bit.ly/maths204

I just revisited this series after first watching when Maths was new to me. Now that I am super familiar with the module these videos still manage to stay a step ahead and help me get even more out of my Maths!! I bought a Sloths and a Turing machine because of your videos and they play a part in almost every patch I make. Thank you for the great videos!!

Hey, thanks! That's awesome that you find that the videos are staying relevant for you!

Very well done! This series is really good at explaining all the features of Maths. Two things I'd recommend: 1. Don't play your background music when running a patch. It's just jarring and distracts from the audio of the patch. 2. I would be careful with your "dead plugs". If you don't cut them perfectly, there might be a strand of copper left that short circuits the plug, thus shorting your module output! It's much better to just buy as many empty plugs as needed from your trusted electronics dealer. Love your videos. Please make more of them! And yes, I've subscribed. ;)

That unipolar to bipolar trick is exactly what I was looking for! I didn’t realize SUM would send out both negative and positive voltages…

This was a really EXCELLENT explanation that shows very clearly and cogently now some of the more complex functions of Maths work. Speaking as someone with traditional musical training-and zero engineering background-, I often find the explanations offered in manuals (and elsewhere) to be too technical and too distant from the thought process I've learned as a composer. You have managed to put this module's functions in the clearest and most digestible of terms. Thank you for making this video!

Hey thanks, I appreciate that! I'm really glad that you found it useful, there is so much going on under the hood that doesn't really get explained.

OH MY GOD I finally understand the OR output thanks to this video. Before my knowledge was “something else happens” 😂

Most excellent explanation of analog OR! And how clever that full rectification patch is!

Thanks! I can't take credit for the rectification patch, that's in the Maths manual, but they don't really explain how/why it works.

@@SoundVoltage yea that's their style in the manuals. I don't think it's by accident.

Thanks! There are 3 more already, and I think there'll be one more in my Maths series.

I do need to get one of these seriously. Your videos really highlight the intricacy that this module can provide. This will go great with my malekko manther and my Neutron dust of time.

It goes great with everything! :) Really, it's just a big swiss army knife. It can do 1000 different things, sometimes a few of them at the same time.

Uncanny. Was just frantically looking up a good description of the OR out. Spooky~ Thank you so much for your videos.

For the first 12 months I was building my eurorack in a small case, I was always like "damn I wish I had more attenuverters or mixers" and Maths is sitting there looking at me "bro I'm right here. RTFM."

The manual won't help. Make Noise manuals are like science research papers. MCPM's vids are where you need to be!

The only case where inverting an audio signal has been useful has been adding multiple outputs of an oscillator. You get phase cancelation that varies by the harmonic. For instance, a sine output minus a triangle attenuates the fundamental only.

Love the content. I didn't like the thumbnail. The first shot of your Mordax with four voltages going and Maths looked better. Diagrams don't appeal as much as the gear. My unsolicited attempt at constructive criticism. Thanks for the video!

No worries, I don't mind hearing what someone thinks isn't working. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
