MATHURA -
Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna and this is the reason, the town grandly celebrates his birthday. Situated at the heart of Braj or Brij-bhoomi, Mathura is mostly called as Shri Krishna Janma-Bhoomi. It is one of the most important places associated to Lord Krishna. Janmashtami is celebrated in Mathura with much devotion and enthusiasm. There are several temples of Lord Krishna in this holy town where people can be seen in festive attires and happy mood. Rasleela is one of the most performed activities of Mathura that depicts the story of Lord Krishn
The Krishna Janmasthan, at Mathura, is important because this is where Lord Shri Krishna manifested Himself in the prison house of the cruel king Kansa and set free his father Vasudeva and his mother Devaki. His purpose was to destroy evil, protect the virtuous, and establish righteousness on a firm footing. Adjacent to the entrance of the prison cell, stands the temple where Astabhuja Maa Yogmaya manifested. The divine ambience of the sanctum sanctorum thrills the hearts of the devotees as soon as they enter the auspicious place, and a sense of conviction surges in their minds that this indeed is the place where Lord Krishna manifested Himself. He gave mankind extraordinary and thought provoking ideas, in the Sacred Scripture, The Bhagavata Gita. The Bhagavat Gita lays the basis of how life should be led in the various walks that govern our life on this earth, as our soul is immortal!
GOKUL
As per the legends, Lord Krishna was born in a prison of Mathura and was taken to Gokul by his father Vasudeva. At this place, Lord Krishna spent his childhood and killed many demons sent by his maternal uncle Kansa. This is the reason; the place has great association with Lord Krishna. He also performed several miracles at this place. Gokul has many important temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and Janmashtami is celebrated here on grand scale.
RAMAN RETI
Situated in Gokul, a few kilometers away from Mathura is this incredible place called Raman Van or Raman Reti―whose sacred sands (reti) are redolent with the stories of a bygone era when Lord Krishna frequented to engage in divine plays (raman) with his brother, Balarama and his cowherd friends. This is also the place he chose to meet his love, Radha before embarking on their journey to Vrindavan together. Raman Reti today is a sandy locale sprawled in a spacious compound complete with a deer sanctuary, a couple of beautiful temples and a relaxing area for ascetics, saints and pilgrims alike. Besides paying reverence, spend some time simply ambling around in the complex―try to bask in the pastimes of Lord Krishna treasured in the sands of Raman Reti.Adjacent to Raman Reti is Karshni Ashram, a famous Ashram housing the ancient Raman Bihariji Temple. Dedicated to the 18th century Saint Gyandasji, the temple houses the deity of Lord Krishna in the exact form as was revealed to the saint as a blessing for his strong austerities to please the Lord. A visit to this famed temple must be on your itinerary if you are stepping in this mystical region.
84 KHAMBA MANDIR
Nand Bhawan, also known as Chaurasi Khamba Temple, is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Gokul. It holds a fascination among visitors and devotees because it was here that Lord Krishna spent his childhood days after their real parents were imprisoned by King Kansa. The house belonged to Nand Maharaj, the foster father of Lord Krishna. It is called Chaurasi Khamba temple because the temple rests on 84 pillars.
According to a mythological legend, it was here that Lord Krishna and his brother Balarama’s name giving ceremony was conducted. This took place in a cowshed lying in close proximity to the temple. A flight of stairs take you to the main entrance of the temple, which then opens to a large courtyard.
BRAMHAND GHAT
Brahmand Ghat is the spot where infant Krishna, after swallowing a few mud particles while playing with his friends, had apparently revealed the entire cosmic universe in his mouth, much to the bewilderment of his foster mother Yashoda. Hence the name of the site is Brahmand Ghat, literally meaning, the universe. Besides the mystical swirl of stories resounding in the environs of this quaint little town, Brahmand Ghat has an old temple overlooking the serene River Yamuna along with the most striking ‘Braj Ki Raj’―literally, the mud of Braj, which attracts pilgrim visitors today
THAKURANI GHAT
This is the main ghat in Gokul and the place where Shree Vallabhacarya received darshan of Shree Yamuna Maharani. He began to give initiation at this place. This ghat is thus a place of great significance to the Vaishnavs of Vallabhsampraday.
