Totally. I could see from this video how much fun he had working with the kids and seeing how much they had on set. And another thing I remember hearing was that he and his wife also cared for Mara while her mother was ill with cancer, and then prior to her mother's death Danny showed her the film because she wanted to watch it. Such a kind hearted guy.
The man is a Hollywood legend. If anyone can do it, he can Plus, if you have a vision for it then it kind of has to be you who directs it. And you find me a better Mr Matilda than Danny...
It's often been said in hollywood that its actually really interesting to get a naturally sweet person play mean because getting someone who's already a jerk comes off more nasty than just good acting ya know
Not to mention, when Matilda's actress' mom was suffering from a terminal illness, Danny Devito and Rhea Pearlman were by her side and they helped her through it. The cast of this movie was pretty great at kindness and acting.
@@anneapolinario5958 she said they practically became her second parents they always invited her to their house and had pool parties there for her and treated her like she was one of their own
My mom and I made it for my dad’s birthday once. We were watching the movie late one night( both of us are terrible at sleeping, and I’d recorded it, so, we decided to watch it ) and we get to the part where Bruce eats the cake and Mom goes ‘ that’s the chocolate cake we should make Dad for his birthday. ‘ So, that’s what we did. It was actually really good.
@@Hi-jr7qb One example: Buddy Ebsen, the original actor to play Tin Man, became seriously ill when he had the make up on. So ill he had to go to hospital. And another, Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch, her costume caught fire and her face was burned.
I loved the part where Danny recounts that Matilda told him that she was embarrassed to dance in front of everyone, so Danny got everyone to dance as well while she was dancing, and she was not the only one anymore. That was so sweet. By the way, Pam Farris didn't get hurt filming the erasers scene hitting her, but she had to go to the hospital a couple of times because she sometimes would get big chunks of chalk in her eyes that needed to get washed out.
@@trinitylivingston1286 im so glad this movie was made, so dope. everyone had an awesome time, i wish they had the footage of everyone dancing, that wouldve been magical
growing up this was the ONLY ONE movie that my grandma had taped on her TV so me and my cousin have watched this movie honestly about 30-40 times and we can all say it word for word. This movie was my childhood
Fun and unfortunate fact Mara Wilson the actress of Matilda saw Danny and Rhea as a second family since they took it upon themselves to help raise Mara while her mother was in the hospital with cancer Just before maras mother passed away Danny played part of the movie to her (the movie wasn't finished yet) and after she passed Danny helped Mara cope with her mother's death Danny is definitely one of the nicest people known to man
The filmmakers just have to know the strength and weaknesses of CGI and practical. They can be used to yield beautiful results if done well in tandem. Look up RJFS CGI for an in-depth explanation of this concept.
I like the fact that whilst her mother was in hospital, Danny and Rhea took care of Mara as well as give her mom a private screening of Matilda when it was done in her room at the hospital before she passed away.
I'm amazed at how Mara was able to carry on working like a little trooper when her mother died. I was 24 when my mother died and was useless for an entire week.
Jacqueline is so cute! I thought her voice from the movie was fake but this video proved me wrong, and the relationship with her and Mara is adorable too.
Danny Devito truly gave a master class here on how to treat the people who work for you. What a guy. You can tell how deeply he cares and how devoted he is to making sure everyone is safe and at ease
Is no one going to talk about Ms. Honey's accent? My life's a lie 😭😭 Also, I gotta say that the way a lot of the scenes were shot in this film is impressive. Props to DeVito for his direction and his treating of the kids on set. I read that he and his wife even cared for the actress that plays Matilda after her mother passed. Shows that he is a really nice guy all around. I couldn't even imagine what it would be like to be in the middle of Hollywood at such a young age, and not only that, but also to have your mom pass away right after filming a movie that you are the star of. I hope her mom got to see the film before her passing.
“You would NOT want to try and blow up your tv because if you did that, you wouldn’t have a tv to watch and then what would you do? You couldn’t even watch this dvd!” *Me: watches on phone* hehehe 1996
U just reminded me of my 1st grade teacher back in 92. Class sat in circle. We were playing a game called when i went to the shop i bought.....each kid had to remember what the previous kid bought and then add their owm. I was feeling sick. I remember sitting on teacher's lap and she chose stickers for me. Another time we had to draw a picture of one of our dreams. I told her that i can never remember my dreams. She told me that i could help her clean the store room
I had a teacher like her and he's a guy. He would hang out or make friends with people who gets bullied and even a huge help when i was sergeant at arms of the student council. He inspired me to pursue my dream as a multimedia artist mostly on illustration (books, posters, comics) He is still working school and the last time me and my friends visited him was two years ago. (we plan to visit him again after the pandemic)
I did looked identical to miss honey too she was so kind and gentle she truly cared for her students would give them all individual attention sure miss her
I think I read that they put a bunch of rubber nails that don’t hurt when they touch you, so when the doors shut the “nails” feel like nothing. No clue where I got that but it’s probably out there somewhere.
You know I was recently thinking weeks before this, that she would have made a much much better headmistress in the fifth movie. I feel like the first half of that movie should have been treated very differently.
Probably a lot of people already know this, but Mara Wilson (Matilda) had her mom hospitalized due to terminal cancer. Not only did Danny and her wife take care of her while filming, but she also later knew that he secretly "stole" an unfinished version of the movie just for Mara's mom to see. Thanks to that she was able to watch her daughter play Matilda before passing away. The man is an absolute legend
The way all of them talk about the special effects and how it was done sounds like it was made in someone's garage, a home movie type. But in a positive way like you can see how Dani was so proud and close to his work and the actors and the staff.
I’m 32 and I still enjoy this movie. My 2 year old baby niece is in love with it she is glued to the screen. So she kinda got me back into it. I love this movie. It’s an instant classic and the actors are absolutely brilliant.
It's really nostalgic to see how they explain how they do the floating chalk or pitcher with practical effects - today that's 100% done with computers; practical effects is a dead art.
I like of how the special effects are so well integrated that you really believe them. It seems that special effects now a days just aren't believeable as they were in the late 90's/early 2000's.
That's because they're all really there. There's actually props to interact with. Compare the Lord of the Rings movies with the Hobbit movies for example. The Lord of the Rings movies have real props. Real things for the actors to touch and interact with. In The Hobbit, a lot of things are not actually there so it's awkward and fake. Both were made by the same people with several of the same actors. However, there is a huge gap in quality because of the CGI.
I love how Rhea looks directly at the camera to tell the kids watching this not to explode their TVs 😂 shes so nice! Too bad it’s not 1996 and I’m watching this on my phone
@@Thomasmemoryscentral That does stand true nowadays, but at the time and under the current circumstances (that is being a professional stunt for a cinematic production), it probably didn't matter to anyone that a CRT TV was being destroyed, in the sense that they held any sort of prestige for being CRTs.
I loved this movie as a kid, I first watched it a little after it had came out. I watched it countless times afterwards. This is the first time after almost twenty years that I have seen this behind the scenes footage.
I know, it was adorable. It’s nice to see a video of Mara having fun while filming Matilda since she was dealing with some pretty tough things in her personal life at the time. Her mother was actually dying of cancer while Matilda was in production. She, also, had a lot of anxiety as a kid and was quite sensitive. Filming Matilda must have been a nice distraction for her in a way. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
And the CGI they did use was fantastic. I never would have guessed the cards flying around Matilda were computer animated. They still seem super real to me
Haha thats cause it was the cheapest way to do it! CGI quality at the time Matilda came out was... how you say... Craptacular. This was either the same age as or older than Space Jam, and if you ever saw that... yeah... better to use prosthetics. 😅
I’m an adult now, and even watching the behind the scenes and KNOWING it’s fake, I got anxious watching them create the Trunchbul throwing the child scene. Also, I had no idea Pamela Ferris had to wear prosthetics in this film!
10:05 Best life advice literally, thank you. Also the way he says "it was so much fun" instead of "it was so difficult" is mind blowing. From now on, I'll think of my homlessness adventures as fun. The challenges were very difficult, but I also had fun.
This movie was my childhood this movie literally taught me English when I first moved to the states. Seeing stuff like this after all this time is absolutely touching I love it so much.
There's such a dark side to children's TV. Nickelodeon seems to have a lot of dark secrets in particular. But if you want proof how this movie was not that, just look at the interviews with the cast. They all came back for the reunion a few years back and had nothing but good things to say and just watching this shows how happy they were.
I honestly always just assumed it was magic when I was little and that sort of stuck 😂 this sort of thing works much better than the the fully cgi stuff nowadays I think
This is pretty interesting to learn how it was actually done. Because I mean when you are watching the movie you actually don't think about what is actually going on behind the scenes
The kids were so adorable in these behind the scenes clips!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️🥺 “If I get dizzy the code word is JELLYBEANS!” She was so cute when she said it, Mara and her were so best friends!!!
"The cake was good, too. I had a lot of it!" Kid me always thought the cake looked delicious and wondered if it was just movie magic or as good as it looked. I'm glad it really was tasty cake all along.
Robert Ryan No, Matilda is based on the book of the same name by Roald Dahl, and the screenplay of the movie was written by other people. But yes, he's amazing.
I love this book and movie! Pam Ferris looked so different from her character Miss Trunchbull. She's so elegant and lovely in real life! That was some movie magic!
