While visiting the Maton factory recently we had the pleasure of taking a behind the scenes look at how these beautiful instruments were hand crafted.

I love the fact that I get to drive past these guys and work next door to them. We share the same factory area down in Box Hill. They're the best

Just great to see any manufacturing happening in Australia. Let alone world class design and production, artisan skills and all! Makes me all the happier that I just chose Maton for my first guitar.

It is interesting to observe that many of the techniques in an old Maton Guitar Factory Promo 1979 film on RU-vid are still used in the current factory tour. Still a job for a craftsman rather than a guy feeding bits of wood into a machine. An authentic product.

I have a Maton FG150-12 that I've owned since 1974 - Serial Number 881 made in September 1971. I bought it from a shop here in Christchurch, where a man who is known as the Father of New Zealand Folk Music, Phil Garland, worked. It had been sitting there for 3 years, and was on sale. I won't tell you what I paid for it, but it was exceptional value for money! In 1980, it was stolen from my home, along with a beautiful Di Giorgio steel-string classical neck guitar, and my entire music collection of nearly 300 LP's by a motorcycle gang, who broke into my place while I was at work one night. My Maton was found nearly two and a half years later on a beach where the gang had a beach party - I know how I string a guitar, and it still had 5 of the original 12 strings on it - dumb fuckers - shows you the intellect of gangs!! A NZ Police Detective I knew through rugby league rang me after it was turned in to the Police and told me he thought they had my guitar!! I identified it over the phone, and he confirmed it was mine. When I got it back, it was just about fucked - huge cracks in the top, finish was knackered, etc. I got it repaired, but was never happy with it, so it languished in a case for a few years. Then I took it to a superb luthier here in NZ named Davy Stuart - it took him two years to find the perfect piece of spruce for the top, he completely refubished the whole guitar, and it now sounds like God playing the guitar!! Davy put the new top on it and tweaked everything, like a new fretboard and machine heads, but the bones of the thing are MATON - and for that, I can't thank them enough - superb instruments!! Tommy Emmanuel has seen it, and he thought it was incredible!!

Can you actually buy a guitar at the Maton factory? … or is it only through dealers/ music shops?

I have a maton Acoustic guitar i paid $1800 brand new years ago i have played it about a dozen times its seems to have a dead string or something its always been in its hardcase it took me years to save for it and the wood on the front has like a black spot in the wood i dont know what to do
@Stoicbushman
@Stoicbushman 4 года назад
Well, if you have had a guitar for years and played it a dozen times I hope you had the strings replaced at least a dozen times! A black spot in the wood doesn't really say much, is it dirt? is it a stain, is the wood cracked? maybe you should just ask someone in a music store to help you with this...

I am a great Maton guitars fan. I'm an Aussie living in England. I'm a classical guitarist, and I ve studied with Sue Ellis in the 90s. In the 80s I bought C50 Maton classical in Melbourne, where I had lived. Beautiful looks, but terrible sound. I don't really know, why you guys have never developed a good classical guitar??

Too much promoyion of flat top guitars.Not enough pushing of jazz models{hollow}.

They go where the market leads... which is "Unplugged" Acoustic Albums and gigging in the bars for a buck. Save your jazz music for your living room and insulate the walls well.
