Matt Chat 196: Lord British on Ultima and Akalabeth 

Matt Barton has the best game channel for people who actually care about games. It's unfortunate his views aren't in the millions. These are the people who built the industry.

Back in '87 my calculus teacher in H.S. supposedly knew him from when he attended the University of Texas at Austin. I took her world for it as explained to her that I loved playing Ultima III-IV on my Apple //e at that time.

Red Hook is ok. I would recommend the Oregon beer: Deschutes Brewery. Especially their Black Butte Porter. YUM!

Matt I'm always surprised at the guests you manage to get on your show. I was watching the Doom postmortem from GDC and John Romero mentioned that he was on Matt Chat.

Great interview! Loved to hear all the history and thoughts of these games that had such an impact on me as a young man.

Oh my god, the hours I've poured into Ultima VII..Richard is a living legend! I've just discovered your channel a few days ago and I can't believe the quality of content to number of viewers ratio of your channel, you should have ten-fold the number of viewers, awesome channel!

The comparison of Mr. Garriott to J.R.R. Tolkien is well-deserved. I'm very much looking forward to the third part of this interview! And boy to I feel stupid.... What he thought was "simple," i.e. programming the Apple II (processor/memory map), dumbfounds me to this day. The "soggy cornflakes" crack made me laugh.

Props for getting an interview with Garriott. I started with Ultima 4 way back in the day (only one I've beat), and went up from there. Such nostalgia. Hey if you like Mead and you can ever get your hands on Viking Blod--I highly recommend. Or get Elegance from Kookoolan Meadery. Utterly fantastic. I learned what mead was from the tavern in Bards Tale III lol.

Dangit! Now I got the Gilligan's Island theme song stuck in my head :(. Great interview, looking forward to the next part.

I am extremely fascinated with how Garriott formats his game notes and would like to review this work so that I may compare his techniques to mine for my weekly Dungeons and Dragons game.

Suomi mainittu. :D When I was a teenager, I also read the whole Kalevala, and also in English, not the native language. The reason for this was that me and my internet pals were developing an indie action rpg based on the book. It was madness, and the project never got finished, but was still one of my most educational gamedev experiences.

Hi Matt, Could you ask Garriott to scan and publish his development notes from the early Ultimas? I would love to read through them (as I imagine you would). It would be a really important documentation of gaming history. Also, has he ever talked about what his D&D 1-27 were like? I have never heard him speak about this.

The "runic language" as well as the other languages found in Ultima games are not actually languages at all, just english in a substitution cipher.

schools' a lousy place to learn anything. I learned a lot more from RG's games such as story writing, philosophy and even how to type!(which I couldn't learn in school because of a learning disability).

Yeah I'd agree, I'd say a writer like George R. R. Martin (not to jump on the ASoIaF fanboy wagon) is much more deserving of the title Like the "Tolkien of our this generation." The parallels are much more solid. I'd compare Lord British more to a digital Gary Gygax.
