Matt Christman stops by the studio to black-pill the GTAA crew, arguing persuasively that spending a lot of effort to get anyone to vote for any particular presidential candidate is a huge waste of time.

@@kumatmebro315we don't even know what happened to him or whatever. Unless you have inside information that everyone outside his family and close friends lacks. It certainly seemed like something related to his brain but we just don't fucking know AND IN ADDITION he said in his last vlog that he had seeing doctors because of pain in his head so that means he was aware of something wrong and was being monitored/had tests done so when it did finally happen he got to a hospital quickly and they had some information already logged on his symptoms previous to the event. All of this raises his chances of making it through literally the worst events possible minus ones that kill instantly. And if he died, we'd know. So right now he's between braindead and fine and we have no info of how he is, what caused it, etc. So all that said What the fuck kind of joke is this? Come on dude. Even if you "hate commies" or whatever your deal is, ok, go yell at ones threatening you in some way. Matt at most gets grumpy and yells into a mic about how we're all dumbasses. Such a lazy perspective. If a third party wants to get real numbers they need to do the work BEFORE the election. Their primaries are decided by thousands of people, where (D) and (R) are counted in the millions. A third party candidate isn’t going to magically gain 60% of the vote out of the blue.

why? justify that. In a good democracy, that's exactly what you'd do - vote to change things how you want. What are you suggesting? That the electoral system should be undemocratic in terms of who's allowed to run for election? I'm not entirely against that - in that you could say that the choice to be democratic is beyond something to be voted on - but what you're saying is not clear.

I live in Norway, we have a wider variety of political parties represented in the Parliament than the US but we still basically have a duopoly. To form governments the parties need coalitions so they align in two broad groupings that are the only two options for government: one, the "Red-Green" alliance is led by the (formerly dominant) Labor party, today in coalition only with the Center party but often also with the Socialist Leftist party (which sounds better than it is) and the other grouping is literally referred to in the media as the Bourgeois side (!) it is led by the party simply called the Right (as in opposite of the Left which is a much smaller party that also aligns on the Bourgeois side) I think as long as our way of practicing "democracy" is adversarial rather than consensus-building, is locked into a nonsensical conception of the Left/Right spectrum and is totally at the mercy of moneyed interests, we will be ruled by these duopolies that give us the illusion of choice while the government protects the money. In Norway, for example, their is quite a broad consensus (all the major parties apart from one) about wanting policies that protect the environment but only two relatively small parties, the Greens and the party called Red (an actual democratic socialist party- this is not the Red & Green referred to in the "Red-Green" political alliance) promote policies that in any way threaten the petroleum industry which lays the foundations for Norway's great wealth. As if more bicycle paths will clean up the mess our petro-economy creates...
@RipTheJackR
@RipTheJackR Год назад
Agreed, the left/right schema thats being presented in Norwegian media is relying on people being ignorant or indoctrinated. A political party that partly privatized Norway's biggest oil&gas company 20 years ago, is considered "on the left", despite pushing neoliberal policies since the 90s.

@@thuggoe The fact that Norwegians refer to the center-right coalition as the "bourgeois parties" is just an amusing relic of the language rather than the media but, yeah the media serves the duopoly, just as it does in the US. We get the illusion of a wider choice of parties but the result is the same and this is a good lesson for those that think everything will improve in the USA if the 2-party duopoly is disturbed by the growth of other parties that can pressure the Dems and Repubs.

It's not a matter of "being obligated to", just the reality that there's no left mass movement to direct that energy towards at the moment. I feel like all the people complaining here aren't looking for actual solutions, but are just looking for someone to pat them on the shoulder and tell them everything's gonna be alright.

@@jamesoakes1819 Maybe the problem is everyone has their own answers. There is so much in fighting and splintering on the Left and maybe that (all this individual thinking), makes it nonviable. Why did Jill Stein undermine West by feeding him to Peter Daou? She was probably jealous of his attention. I always thought a big name coming into the Green party would be met with ugly internal behavior and I was right. It's like everyone on the Left just wants to be a righteous critic and this has nothing whatsoever to do with anything happening in the world. Stuff happening in the world is just a pretext for virtue signaling,

"In fighting" is literally what politics is. There's never going to be 100% agreement within any mass political movement. It's not a nice thought that we are living in an era where little major change can happen. Local activism is a good thing, and Matt endorses it too. But our national politics and the discourse around it is all libido.
@hadronoftheseus8829
@hadronoftheseus8829 Год назад
Well, fortunately it's also a false thought. I hope you won't slay the messenger for bearing good news, but we don't in fact live in an era in which major change is unfeasible in any especial sense. To wit, it is eminently possible that there could arise a candidate younger than Sanders with but with similar or still better politics, who successfully secures both the Democratic nomination and the presidency in 2028. This is not _wildly_ implausible in the mind of anyone who can manage to get more than a few dozen neurons firing, and frankly I'd place the subjective probability at greater than fifty percent. (People who think this is starry-eyed are drawing _exactly_ the wrong conclusions from 2016 and 2020.) In the mean time, we can push the discussion of ranked choice voting into public discourse as often and assertively as possible. Neither party wants it of course, but there's a silver lining, and it's actually quite an opulent lode: There is _absolutely no case to be made_ against ranked choice voting - even a fleetingly specious one. The weight of argument is so utterly and immensely lobsided that it has literally no sincerely principled opposition. None. This is not hyperbole; such people just flat out _do not exist_ . No, they _really_ don't. As such, any politician who opposes ranked choice voting _on pretext_ can very easily be made to look either contemptibly evasive or overtly dishonest in the eyes of even the most obtuse and poorly educated voters - if only such conversations can be pressed upon them against their will. And again, this is far from impossible. These two very live possibilities alone are flint and tinder enough to start with.

Voting green isn't exclusively driven by podcast personalities and to suggest someone like Brie is trying to build some movement from her show instead of just be a voice for people disillusioned by media (EXACTLY what Matt does on Chapo) is weird and overthinking. I do agree that the party system is a losing battle and no movement can happen from a top -down way, but the fact that Matt, after slamming Gray for having faith in the system, then recounts his motives for voting Sanders in the same system, shows there can be value in trying to create a known demographic outside republican and democrat.

I get where Christman is coming from, it's almost like Fisher's Capitalist Realism perspective just applied to modern day polarisation. The thing is though, the dismissive attitude towards Oliver Anthony and the "lumpen whites" really speaks to the type of effect that cultural media environment can have on your perspective of other people. Yes, you are correct that people do not have fully formed ideologies and have general "sentiments" towards things. That doesn't mean that they should be ridiculed or that there isn't some potential there to build social trust on a number of issues. It seems like Christman is happy to meet the democrats where they are but isn't willing to speak to whole other side of the country.

Lmao, Oliver Anthony had an interview scheduled with Midwestern Marx and then cancelled after going on Jordan Peterson's podcast. Proving once again why Matt Christman is the real midwestern marxist. Matt has always been consistent pointing out in his analyses how Americans on both sides of the political spectrum are both equally stuck within the bourgeois framework of republicans vs democrat, and that trying to pull people out of this framework is going to be a futile endeavor if there's no larger political project to direct them towards. Otherwise you're just grandstanding about how you're the true marxist, the one who really understands those pure salt of the Earth working class folks in Appalachia. The way some of you guys talk about blue collar whites actually reminds me a lot of the way liberals talk about black people and other minorities; as if their mere existence is a revolutionary act in and of itself and that any criticism of the media-annointed representatives is secretly an attack on the group as a whole.

This discussion reflects a very narrow and mechanical conception of how political change takes place. Over the long run people's attitudes and behaviors in all areas, including politics, are shaped and reshaped by a variety of kinds of social influence, many of them quite subtle. If I'm in a polity -- Philadelphia, for instance -- that overwhelmingly supports one of the two capitalist parties, then it's profoundly _un_-pragmatic to vote for either of them, precisely because there's no chance that it will make a difference to who's elected in this cycle. But if I understand social psychology, then I can appreciate that voting for a third party creates _social proof_ (one of the six "weapons of social influence" identified by Robert Cialdini in his signal work _Influence_ ) for supporting a different kind of politics. At any given time under normal historical conditions, most people won't be carefully studying the election results, but those who do will notice an increase in the vote for a third party and will start taking it more seriously. It may lead them to investigate its platform and get involved in some of its issues. Even if they don't get into the weeds of the election returns, the same things might result simply from noticing how many people are wearing a third candidate's campaign buttons. And again, particularly in an election that isn't close, this may result in their also wearing that button and voting for that candidate, which in turn broadcasts social proof to others, etc. You have to be willing to think long-term.
@stripey7303
@stripey7303 Год назад
I should add that the non-existence of any (major) vehicle for effecting change outside the red/blue dichotomy doesn't mean you can't work on building them, and there are currently several such projects. One of the most interesting is Vote Pact, a concept that involves finding someone with opposite ideological leanings but a similar frustration with the pressure to vote lesser-evil, and jointly declaring that neither of you will vote for either major party in any election for which you're both eligible. This withdraws two votes from the big capitalist parties without changing the balance between them, but also has the virtue of motivating people to seek out and develop understanding and trust with people who have a different perspective.
@ajiththomas2465
@ajiththomas2465 Год назад
Interesting comments but virtue signaling and social proofs do not mean anything in voting without the proper context. The US has a first past the post voting system, so the viability of third parties in the national scale are mathematically unfeasible. You could social proof and virtue signal for a third party all you'd like but it's not going to affect or change the minds or persuade anyone who doesn't already have the same ideological inclinations as you.

I watched Biden literally having the power in his hand with student loans, with other democratic senators TELLING him how to do it, and he just ignores them. I watched him literally undermine Roe V Wade via his correspondence to the Supreme Court. I watched him ignore the biggest titans in the global markets tell him don't enact sanctions on Russia. At what point does it become common sense to stop voting for the problem? Same goes with the republicans, but at least they tell you where they stand. the point is you don't have any control or say over that because none of the people having these arguments are part of some organized effort. If they were, then they would be voting based around the decision of said organization. That doesn't exist on the left, so it's pointless to argue about how this or that individual votes because it doesn't fucking matter in a very real tangible sense.
